"An excerpt from Oral History interview by Madeline Howden (nee Bradshaw, one of Sarah's daughters) in with the Bradshaw information is very interesting, too: "We were the first generation of girls who'd ever had to earn a living. But that's why Mother came to Victoria. She knew we'd have to earn our own livings. So my sister Ethel was a stenographer, Nancy was a stenographer, too, but changed to be a nurse and she went off to the First World War. And she was down in Gallipoli during the war."

Excerpts from Oral History Interview:
„h"I was in highschool when the war… And I'll never forget it, the boys from
highschool went off as though they were going to a picnic. And of course my
beau was killed. I came across a picture from the other day, you know, anyway.
Our whole lives were ruined. All the boyfriends were killed. Day after day there
were lists in the paper of deaths. Was nobody left. And then of course when the
war was over there was a terrible slump in Victoria and there was no work and
the boys that did come back from the war went off elsewhere to get an education
or to get jobs. So it was very lean times."
„h"I stayed there [teaching] till Christmas and I came home for Christmas. And the
news was bad. My brother'd been injured, my beau was dead, my two sisters
were away at the war. It was a dreary time."

120817 from Shannon Wheeler of Vancouver, BC, whose husband, John, is a remote cousin (4th cousin, once removed) via the connection between the Windsors and the Bradshaws. This is a report of an interview with one of the Bradshaw descendants.

INTERVIEW WITH MADELINE HOWDEN (nee Bradshaw)
Date: May 15, 1997
Interviewer: Bob (Robert) Travis (nephew)

Mother (Sarah Bradshaw) already had 6 daughters and one son William and they very much wanted another boy. I was born March 30, 1898. But because it was the middle of the night nobody knew that I was born until the 31st.
Father was sick with a bad cold and mother had him upstairs in her bedroom with a little fireplace and the things you remembered, he was walking the baby (me) and she thought he looked tired so she said you should go back to bed now. Well that was 5 weeks after I was born and the next day her had pneumonia died right then and there was mother with 8 children and no husband. Father died the first week of May (actual date May 18, 1898).
What we lived on, we had a small hotel where the boats and the train meet. The boats used to come up in Placentia Bay and the train came from St. Johns and they met at the wharf. Our hotel was right down beside it. Also had lots of land, piece of land,
So anyway, by the time I was 8 years old my Aunt Emma in St. Johns asked Mother if she would come out to Victoria with her. They had a brother (Augustus Windsor also known as Uncle Gus) who had left Newfoundland and came out to Victoria, who had a home here. Mother was delighted so course, off they went. It was March, well the weather in Newfoundland was cold and foggy and snowy and she came to Victoria and the flowers were out, trees were bursting. She left everything at home. ? was old enough to look after us. They had a lovely time. She knew there was nothing for girls to do in Placentia, they'd have to earn their own living now that we had no father so she told my Uncle to build a house and she would have us all out in Victoria in a years time.
In 1907 we all arrived, except my brother Will who was the oldest and he stayed back in Montreal to take some kind of electrical course. We went to the little Cedar Hill school, a 2 room school, and then Anne took a course at St. Anne's Academy. Nancy and Ethel got a job at Spencers old shop. Sewing or something and then they both took courses in stenography and they were both stenographers.
Nancy earned enough money as a stenographer to het her nurse's uniform and so on and she became a nurse and gave up stenography.
Trix and Nancy got to Royal Jubilee as nurses and they both went to the 1st World War. Nancy went down to Gallipoli, which was terrible, because everybody from Newfoundland was killed off. The Australians, the Canadians and the Newfoundlanders were the ones who were sent down there and that was the end of all the young men of those countries. The best of the countries were killed. Horrible wasn't it.
Newfoundland never got over it. They never picked up after. There was nobody to come back. All the young men had joined up and gone. Victoria was terrible. All our friends were killed. There was a depression, there was nothing for them to do when they came so they didn't stay here. It was a terrible time of life. 1914-1918 war.

Will went to the war and he came back and he was in an office and he was awfully nervous (PTSD) He couldn't get over being confined. Our neighbor was a surveyor and he got a job from the Government surveying the land that they were going to give returning soldiers. Everybody got a Ό section of land, so Will went with this neighbor, Williams, up into the interior and he loved it up there and he took up a ½ of a section of land near Quesnel and he built a little cabin.
Mother, Floss, Hettie and I went up to visit him on summer and stayed in the ranch with him. He had a cattle ranch and it was quite a success and he managed to ship carloads of cattle but then he married a nurse from Quesnel and family began to arrive. They had 2 boys and 2 girls and so he got a job in Quesnel running the business end of something. Did very well. Finally he died of cancer and then that left the 7 girls.

Bradshaw Family History

Family came to Newfoundland in the late 1790's or early 1800's. They were connected with the Keligrews of Kilkenny, Ireland.
Family history says one Bradshaw brother was a Captain and one the Doctor on Duke of York's boat which sailed to North America. William (King) was very hard on the crew and wouldn't let them land in Newfoundland after a long trip up the coast. So the Bradshaws left the ship after William later King William !V of England, Queen Victoria's father. He gave up his large morganatic family so his new children would be heirs to the throne, married a German??

Another story is that he met the Bradshaws on a stay in Ireland then gave them the land in Placentia, the old French Capital. (no wonder the present King's generations behind them of libertines). There were two branches, Bradshaws in St. Johns - very accomplished music and painting. When Mother, Sarah Payne Windsor, of Aquafoote married William Bradshaw she joined the household in Placentia. Uncle Albert ( Member of Parliament) and Aunt Sarah (Sally) who helped raise us all. We were about the only non-catholics in a very Irish environment in Jersey Side - the town side was the main part across the Gut' a narrow inlet into the Bay. We used to be taken across in a boat, sculled across like a ferry (now a bridge). There is a small museum in Placentia with information on us there, is a fish cannery where our ? cannery used to be called Placentia Bay - go and see it soon. Lots of relations in St. Johns.

 Cause of Death:

Events

• Alt. Death: 5 Jun 1883, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Based of the 1800 Census of Ferryland District, we know that the family of the widowed Daniel Sanders/ Saunders consisted of two sons, Robert and William, and one daughter, your ancestor, Ann Saunders Morry. In 1818, when part of the old Carter family property at Aquaforte was subdivided, only two heirs, Robert and Ann were recorded as being present for this transaction. Family researchers deemed that William's absence likely meant that he had died sometime between 1800 and 1818. However, I usually indicate that such absences could mean the individual had died, or moved. The record that lead me to consider the latter was the record in the BDM database which shows that a William Saunders, aged 87, formerly of Ferryland, had died at St. John's in 1877. By calculation, this indicates that William was born there about 1790. The 1800 Census for the settlement of Ferryland shows that William, son of Daniel, was born there about 1789, so he was the most likely match within the Sanders families living there. In the St. John's newspapers, no religious affiliation is given for William but it is noted his funeral would take place from Theatre Hill.

A further search of the BDM database identified that Margaret Saunders, aged 75, who died 27 June 1883. It states that she was the widow of the late Capt. William Saunders, "formerly" of Ferryland. Her home address in St. John's was 239 Gower Street. With a bit of research, I found that William Saunders' address in Lovell's and McAlpine's business directories was actually 239 Gower St. He was listed as being a carpenter/ship carpenter so it is rather curious that there is a couple of references to William as being a Captain. Apparently the now defunct Theatre Hill was near the bottom of Long's Hill and at the junction of what was then Gower St and Queen's Road. This intersection was likely changed after the fire of 1892 and I have yet to find a pre-1892 map which shows the actual old street configuration.

Now we know that the Saunders of Ferryland were Anglican, but my search of Forest Road and the General Protestant cemeteries found no one matching William and Margaret. I did however find them buried at Belvedere Cemetery indicating that this Saunders family had converted to Catholicism at some point in time . The headstone in Belvedere reads as follows:

Saunders William June 17, 1878 77 Capt, erected by son Peter Saunders
Margaret June 5, 1883 73

Unfortunately, this headstone is not photographed on NGB, Find-a-Grave. In Stonepics only Margaret's (1883) name is listed. Of course with The Rooms closed I can't verify what is inscribed on the headstone. While Margaret's age is within two years of the age reported in the newspapers, William's age differs by 10 years!! It was shown in the FHSNL collection (below) and while that record indicates that William was 77, it gives his death year as 1879 !!

I am in the process of going through all of the St. John's RC marriages and baptisms. I have found 3 baptisms so far in the Basilica records plus I also know there was also Peter and John in the family. William's wife was named Margaret Bradshaw. I did not find out where they married and thought it a little odd that Bradshaw would be a Catholic surname. However, the Bradshaws of the Placentia Bay area were likely CE, then RC. One of them was a J.P.

I have been able to find a number of references to their sons Peter and John. Peter lived in the Carter's Hill area where he eventually lived at #3 Saunders Pl. He was usually listed as a shipwright. John lived in the old family house at 239 Gower St. and he was listed as a ship carpenter. After the fire of 1892 he may have lived elsewhere in the city. Both of these sons eventually moved out of Newfoundland. Peter was married twice and he and his second wife moved to Montreal in 1906. He died there in 1917. John and his entire family moved to Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1900.

Given the limited information available, the big stumbling block is the accuracy of William's age at his time of death. If this William was 87 years old when he died, I would say definitely that he was the son of Daniel. However, if he was only 77, as his headstone indicates, then he would likely be a grandson of John and Catherine Saunders. I'll keep on digging - maybe I get lucky.

060620:

Kevin Reddigan discovered a Bradshaw family tree in the Keith Matthews Bradshaw Name File on the Maritime History Archive website. It purports to show that this Margaret Bradshaw was the daughter of Dr. William (or possibly Francis) George Bradshaw, the presumed patriarch of the Bradshaw family in Newfoundland who arrived in Placentia supposedly with Prince William (later King William IV) as surgeon on the HM PEGASUS in 1786.

The problem with this account is that there is no identification as to the source of this family tree and therefore no way to know how much trust to put in the information that it contains. The absence of dates is particularly troubling as the family tree appears to have condensed a number of generations into one making me question is overall reliability.

That said, this is the ONLY reference to Margaret Bradshaw either Kevin or I have been able to uncover prior tp her marriage to Capt. William Saunders.

It is also worthy of note that the Saunders and Bradshaw families were both prominent in the affairs of Placentia. Whether this was the same Saunders family that set up shop in Ferryland or not is also not known.
