Notes
General:
150204: I really have no idea if this Elizabeth Mory, married in Stoke Gabriel in 1651, is indeed a daughter of Henry Mory and Joan Hornebrook. It seems likely but there is nothing in any of the information from Aunt Jean or Geoffrey Williams that bears this out. Requires more research but in the meantime I am making the connection as it seems most logical.

310314:
The parentage of William Morey of Stoke Gabriel, ancestor of our Morry line, is contentious and until now I have always accepted Henry Mory and Joan Hornebrook only tentatively since I had no alternative. One thing is clear, however, the marriages of William and of Elizabeth in Stoke Gabriel at much the same time seems to support their being siblings. Whether or not they are also siblings of the other children attributed to Henry and Joan based on more solid parish data is somewhat questionable I think.

160321:
Some time after writing the above noted I separated William Mory from these parents because he is my immediate ancestor and I had no confidence any more in the putative connection stated by Geoffrey Williams. But at that time I left Elizabeth connected to these parents and the other siblings. Now, on the strength of her marriage record appearing in the Stoke Gabriel Register on the same page as that of William and Jennet Full, I have decided to sever her from this family as well and unite her as a sister of William under parents unknown. 807

020204:

I checked these records on microfilm very carefully at the FHC in Moncton. The microfilm is extremely bad, especially the part that relates to the 1500s and early 1600s. But I am sure that there is absolutely no evidence of birth records for Philippa Mory (1654) , Juditha Mory (1658) and Jeane Mory (1669). I have no idea where Aunt Jean and others found this information. One possibility relates to the fact that the Parish Records on microfilm are not a direct print of the original Parish Records. The microfilm was made from what appears to be a very old, but not original version. In other words a manual, hand-written transcript made many years ago. It is not dated, but it does indicate that it was presented to the Devon and Cornwall Record Society for the use of their members by an individual whose name is illegible on the microfilm. Perhaps the Society can clear up this mystery. It was noted that it was "Deposited at the Exeter City Library" so they too should know how and when and by whom it was deposited. A note added in hand later indicates that when checked against the original a number of records were found to have been omitted. This could be what happened in the case of the missing Morys. Other researchers who found these names may well have picked them off the original Parish Records books.

Note the discrepancy; in the latter transcript it says her mother's name was Joane too when in fact it was Jennet. This is nothing more than a transcription error on FindMyPast because the image clearly shows the mother's name as Jennet.

Notes
General:
NOTE #1 Sept. 1999: All the relatively solid information we have on this generation is from Enid O'Brien. In her email of Sept. 8, 1999 she wrote:

" John Morry (Dartmouth, Devon) married Priscilla Harvey in 1732 (St.Saviour's parish). The archivist thought that this John was the son of John and brother of Arthur Morry. Arthur was baptised on May 6, 1687 in St. Clements parish in Dartmouth (but this is not definite)."

In another email from Enid O'Brien on Oct. 31, 1999 she provided further information:

"Re John Morry & Arthur Morry (? brothers) and (?) sons of John (from St. Clements parish). I do not know if they are brothers and I do not know if John (md) to Priscilla Harvey is the son of John father of Arthur. The archivist thought there might be a connection for the following reasons (a) Arthur was baptised on April 6, 1687 at St. Clements and would be of a time frame where he could be a brother of John md to Priscilla. (b) They were all from St. Clements parish, John married there, Arthur baptised there. (c) As Arthur's father name is John and John (md to Priscilla Harvey) could possibly be named for his father. Also, Arthur is a name that is brought down in the Morry family - Matthew Morry/Ann Saunders had a son Arthur Kemp; Henry Sweetland Morry/Mary Deverueax had a son Arthur;Esther Graham Morry/Capt Henry Carew had a son Arthur who died and then named another child Arthur (my grandfather). All the evidence would point to some type of relationship but I can't really say they are brothers. This would need more confirmation."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Geoffrey Williams' Morey database sheds some light on this as well (Morey email 366, August 11, 2000), though with quite a few discrepancies on dates and spelling of surname, thouhg the latter was normal at that time:

"In Morey 366 we ended up with the Devonshire Moreys who migrated to Newfoundland. We know them as the KLN Gabriel because we have them located in Stoke Gabriel, District of South Hams, DEV, ENG:

Note Gregory MST was in a muster roll at Calverly, Tiverton, Districtof Mid Devon 1569. He was quite away from home, but England needed to hold rock solid against the Pope who was ready to send armies and navies to attack the cause of his loss of income.

Later in same email he added:

"You are the only KLN Stoke Gabriel Morey on this Morey Forum. So they are pretty thin on the ground. Sorry to read your Aunt Jean Morry is deceased. We are relying on the previous Morey research done by many people such as this person. I do not know how accurate our guesses are. We do not know how much Morey information is missing. We can only comb parish by parish and share the information we find. Sometimes we just need to chasm jump.

The above record is a guessed date from a guessed marriage. All Morey men marry aged 25 years until proven different. Here is the John Morey to whom you refer:

We have the clan known as KLN (for clan) Janet Full. It looks as if the KLN Janet Full is the same clan as KLN Gabriel. "

As an explanation of their methodology he added:

"The fourth field is the type. Eg B Birth, C Christening, CEN Census,D Death, ER Electoral Rolls etc. KLN is special. It is used by the Morey Forum once per clan to show the head is the brickwall. The DT date is usually estimated from the marriage or census or electoral roll or death or LR land record etc. KLN Janet Full is still known as Brickwall Janet Full or Janet Full Moreys, but lately in tidying the Morey dB database I have shown the Brickwall father KLN Janet Full (the clan name is the name of the unknown father) as KLN Janet Full in the CLN (the field name for KLN). The reason we use KLN for CLN is we have C for Christening and CEN for Census. Copying from FCN = KLN Janet Full as a paste into a find on CLN = KLN Janet Full, will give all the known members of the clan. As you have shown the Morey Forum the KLN Gabriel is the KLN Janet Full, I have changed in CLN all the KLN Janet Full to KLN Gabriel and deleted my guess birthdate for John and carried with him his spouse:

In this systematic way we work our way back on the clans as they arise. We will be very grateful for your following our Morey Series and contributing wherever you can.

The following email is from a fellow Canadian whose Morey origins are in Dorset and Devon. We will see what he has found. He has sent new data for the Morey dB in comma delimited text. He uses Access into which one can type a lot of information. I have fixed the length of the fields in Lotus Approach and his data needs checking before it gets imported into my Morey dB. I do this in Excel and copy and paste it into mine. I get so much data each week, I cannot keep up checking it into families. It lies in the dB until an email such as yours forces me to find, hence raising the dust.

Kind regards, Geoffrey"

060803: "Mary b about 1691 is in fact Mary dau of Thomas and Elizabeth not John and Susanna."

On basis of above information from John Tolcher, Stoke Gabriel OnlineParish Clerk, I have today moved Mary from being a child of John and Susanna to being a child of Thomas and Elizabeth

"As for Susanna and Joan, again they are not in the records but they are still quite likely. Indeed a Joan later marries John Street on 15th Jan 1739 at Stoke Gabriel. As for Susanna it would be unusual for the first dau not to be called after the mother so again it is likely."

Record transcribed from microfilm on loan from LDC at Family History Centre in Moncton, January 2004. All spelling is precisely as seen, however I believe that the microfilm was in fact of a transcription of the Church records, not the original church records themselves and therefore it is possible that errors were introduced by the person who performed the original transcription:

"1662 1 Jan. John fil. William Mory & Jennet Ux."

041215 (Dad's 96th birthday):

A new contact, Gail McConnell of the Dartmouth History Research Group, put me onto the fact that there is a website called British History Online. There she found a reference to a minor appointment as tidesman and boatman in 1745 that was granted to a John Morey who was either Matthew's father or grandfather (both were of an age where it was possible). While investigating this item on the website, I decided to do a generic search on Morey and came up with another reference to a John Morey, Esquire who was to be appointed captain-lieutenant under the reign of Mary and William in 1694. It is entirely possible that this man is "our" John Mory. Of course there are other possibilities and it cannot be stated for certain that this is the man, but pending further proof I am laying claim to this distinction tentatively.

120219:
FindMyPast suggested a burial for this John Mory in Paignton on June 6 1731. This would tie in with the fact that we know his wife, Susanna was a wuidow when she was buried on 23 Feb. 1735/36. The seeming anomaly of his burial in Paignton rather than Stoke Gabriel could have two explanations: first, it was not that far from Stoke Gabriel and may have been where his father originated; and second, if indeed he was attached to a military unit it would have been more likely that he would have been stationed in a large centre such as Paignton rather than in a small farming village like Stoke Gabriel. This is not proof that this is indeed his burial record but it is possible.
