Notes
General:
Email from Enid O'Brien 11/03/02: According to an account by Helena Angel (relative) Sybrilla dgt of Benjamin and Tryphena Sweetland married Rev. Bertram Jones and moved to England.

As far as Enid and I can determine Mrs. Angel said Sybrilla but meant Emma as we know that Emma Sweetland was married to Bertram Jones and we have no record of there ever being a Sybrilla Sweetland.

"Jones, Bertram (Rev) late rector of Cof E, Hr Grace died Isle of Wright, age 72 years, Rector of Kingston, I.W., July 3, 1883 Ref. Gazette.

If you have the Encylopedias of Newfoundland, Smallwood, ed. you will find a writeup on Rev. Jones.

060318 from Kevin Reddigan's website:

Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador - Jones, Bertram. (1811-1883). Clergyman. Born England. Jones arrived in Newfoundland in 1844 as superintendent of Church of England schools. He was later ordained and in 1846 was stationed at Quidi Vidi as clergyman. He was at Trinity from 1848 to 1850. In 1851 he became rector of St. Paul's Church at Harbour Grace, a position he held for 25 years. His health failing, in 1865 he was given leave of absence and returned to England. He remained in England for two years. Because the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel did not grant him a pension, he returned to Harbour Grace in 1867. He remained there until 1876 when he returned to England with a pension of £40 annually from his parishioners.

Note: -------- Some of the information is incorrect. Rev. Jones appears to have been at Trinity until about May 1848 at which time he transferred to Bonavista. He served as minister at Christ Church, Bonavista until about 1851 before transferring to Harbour Grace.(Kevin Reddigan)
