Notes
General:
June 1, 2003: According to Jol Sweetland's notes in his family tree file, Charles used his RN contacts to secure passage to Australia on the DIDO in the 1850s some time.
060318 from Kevin Reddigan:
As for Joylon's ancestor Charles, I think he is valid. Here is a reference that I have on my site:
"Evening Telegram, July 10th, 1888.
A successful Newfounlander at Antipodes is illustrated in the person of Charles Sweetland, Esq, who has worked his way on a rugged path which leads to fame and fortune 'till he managed to reach and sit down in a managerial chair of a prosperous bank in Sydney, Australia. Mr Sweetland is well known here, he was a clerk at Hunt and Company Offices and Sinclairs Agency. He is a native of Trinity and has a brother doing business in New York. The Sweetlands of Trinity bear a name of frequent mention as having one of the oldest and most honourable records in the colony."

06/03/02:
It is not known at this time that David and Henry were brothers but it seems likely, They were both from Devon and both involved in the fishery in the Ferryland area at the same time. Bears more research.
Kevin Reddigan (email march 3, 2002) notes that in Surrogate Court records David Sweetland rented a plantation called Audley's Plantation on the north side of Caplin Bay from James Walsh on April 10, 1805 and also he bought a house and land at the east side of Old Women's Pond from James Haley on Aug. 11, 1814.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
07/03/02 email from Enid O'Brien: Parish Records of Topsham. March 13, 1768 David Sweetland "mariner" married Hannah Hill, lic. Wit. Lucy Collins and Mary Thomas. This could be the David Sweetland who "may" be a brother of Henry, senior. Of significance is that he was a mariner. His children were born beween 1771-1782 which means that he could possibly be a brother to Henry (just going by the ages of the children). Also, he married Hannah "Hill". It may be a coincidence but Ann Carter was married to Samuel "Hill". Also, among others, David Sweetland and Hannah Hill have children Samuel, Benjamin, Henry.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
080115 -- in their accession notes on William Sweetland Diary (see David's brother William's General Note) it is suggested that David may have been involved in the Sweetland and Company firm run by Henry in Ferryland/Caplin Bay:
"They owned a number of vessels, and were involved in the West Country / Newfoundland trade."
"There is also evidence of a company known as Sweetland and Hill, listed as anchor smiths and coal merchants at Topsham, Devon in the 1770s, and of their ownership of a number of vessels involved in the Newfoundland trade. Both David and Henry were also involved in this business."
191019:
In his book, Courageous Souls on page 212 Kevin Reddigan discusses David's involvement in the fish business in Newfoundland but cannot conclude that he was partnered fully with his brother Henry and also believes that he probably never came to Newfoundland personally.
