271012 from David Arnott: He did indeed marry (and scandalously abandon Caroline, who later successfully sued him for divorce and the return of her three daughters in London. We have the divorce papers. The girls were indeed born in Newfoundland where the regiment was stationed, but Archibald had transferred into this regiment from the British Army.

Hello Christopher, I see that you do not have a surname for Archibald James ARNOTT's wife. I found the following: Birth The birth of a Caroline Martha JONES in 1839 is registered in the Quebec Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 at Ancestry.com. Deciphering the handwriting of the record it appears that she was born 23rd of July 1839 and on the day of the recording, 5th September 1839, her baptism took place. The baptism took place in the Anglican Church at Philipsburg, Quebec.

Death England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 In 1908 JONES otherwise ARNOTT Caroline Martha of Baskerville Guildford Surrey single woman died 14 January 1908 Probate London 13 March to Richard Arthur Archibald Jones esquire and William Ward Leadam doctor of medicine. This is how I read it: On this fifth day of September, eighteen hundred thirty nine, Caroline Martha, daughter of Col. the Hon. Robt. Jones & Caroline Greisnes (?) his wife, born the twenty third day of July last was baptized, her sponsors being Martha Bull & her parents, by Richard Wheback (?) Minister. [Signatures of Martha Bull and Caroline Jones and presumably Robert Jones (illegible fancy signature)]

Philipsburg still exists but under the francophone name of St. Armand. It is on the farthest north tip of Lake Champlain, just beside the US border.

On the 1871 census she reported that she was a widow. This was to cover up the embarrassment of her husband leaving her and his children. He went on to have other children by a woman that he did marry after this date.
