Hello Christopher. I see you have this woman (Lillie Mabel Agnes Jones) in your family tree. Although not a blood relative she played an important part in our branch of the Tattersall family. She was apparently known as Mabel.

She came to England as a child, studied medicine and eventually worked as a doctor in Glasgow sharing house with Mabel Wickenden, a head teacher. She became medical officer to the Glasgow Institute for Orphans and Destitute Girls where she must have come across Kathleen Emma Watson b1917. Kathleen (Kay) was the illegitimate child of a Glasgow girl, Catherine Pinkerton and allegedly John Watson who apparently died during WW1. The 2 Mabels adopted Kay and brought her up as their own child.

In 1923 Dr Mabel Jones died in mysterious circumstances falling from a train.
Kay Watson became nurse, married my father's brother Charles Ian Tattersall, and had 4 sons. She died in 2004.

My cousins knew very little about their mother's background so it has been a privilege for me to research her origins.

Mabel Jones had 2 older sisters but I have found no evidence either married or had children. How closely are you related to the Jones family and do you know of any living relatives?

Thanks in anticipation.

Chris Tattersall

Hi Christopher

It's fascinating that you have all those sea captains in your tree. Most of the my family sail for pleasure and a few have been in the Royal Navy but none became Captain! We also have lots of doctors including my father, myself and my daughter.

Dr Mabel Jones as you know was born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland around 1870. As a child she moved with her family to England and was educated at St Bartholomew School, Lewisham in London. She commenced her medical studies at the Royal Free Hospital, London in 1887, qualified in 1893 with honours in medicine and obstetrics and was awarded MB in 1895. She held posts in surgery and anaesthetics in Hull and the Royal Free Hospital.

Around 1910 she moved to Glasgow, becoming Assistant Surgeon and Anaesthetist at a women's hospital and as previously mentioned, Medical Officer to the Glasgow Institute for Orphans and Destitute Girls.

While in Glasgow she shared accommodation with Mabel Wickenden. She probably met Mabel through her sisters who lived near the Wickenden family in Bexhill, Kent. I presume that it would not be unusual for 2 single professional women to share a home although their precise relationship is not clear. They must have shared a commitment to undertake adoption of a baby girl in 1918.

We are still in touch with Mabel Wickenden's niece, Ann Wickenden and have the benefit of a brief biography written by Mabel's brother. It seems that around this time Dr Jones became disillusioned with conventional medicine in favour of a spiritual healing approach. She gave up her hospital post resulting in loss of income.

In 1923 she was travelling with a lady companion by train to see her sister in Bexhill. She fell from the train and was killed. I have attached a copy of a newspaper report below. I hope it is legible. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death although it is difficult to understand how she could have opened the door window and turned the external handle while the train was at speed. There must be suspicion that she intended to end her life.

After Mabel Jones death, Mabel Wickenden took young Kay to live with her own family in Bexhill.

Mabel's father, Rev Bertram Jones, became a minister on the Isle of Wight. In May 1883 he was admitted as a private patient to Laverstock Lunatic Asylum in Wiltshire where he died 2 weeks later.

Mabel's eldest sister, Sybella Harriet became owner and superintendent of a private hospital in Tunbridge Wells, Kent while the middle sister Emma Maria worked as a nurse in the same hospital. Sybella died in 1932 but I haven't traced Emma Maria's death or that of their mother Emma.

Regards
Chris 5842
Medical:
Suspicious circumstances. In order to fall from the train she would have had to lower the window and operate the door handle from the outside. There were no door handles on the inside of train compartments in those days. 5841
