Alphonsus (Phonse) Kavanagh

February 4, 1932 - September 12, 2024
Passed peacefully away on September 12, surrounded by his loving family, Alphonsus (Phonse) Kavanagh of Ferryland,(resident of Alderwood Estates, Witless Bay), age 92.

Predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Aggie, January 19, 2022; his parents, Johnny and Mary (Rogers) Kavanagh, his eight brothers and three sisters.

Leaving to mourn his adoring children, Brenda (Billy Hayden), Justin (Daphne), Cavell (Rudy Embury), Colleen (Russ Maher), Loyola (Joan), Barry (Jean Anne) and Cheryl (Neil O'Brien); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Leanne (Owen House), Blake Hayden (Ashley, Sophie and Will); Ryan Kavanagh (Meghan, Frank, Phonse and Nora), Leslie Lambe (Jimmy, Felix, Ruby and Sonny); Danielle Charron (Marc, Ava and Addison); Keith Lawlor and Bobby McSweeney; Stefan Lawlor (Bridget, Maeve, Fiona and Sadie); Andrew Embury (Grace, Elliott and Charlotte), Alison and Cristin Embury; special grandson, Brad Maher; Peter Kavanagh (Simone), Shayne Kavanagh (Kassidy), Emily Kavanagh (Robin); Liam O'Brien, Allison Morgan (Jason and Levi), Josh O'Brien (Jessica, Norah, Lila, and Jacob), and Luke O'Brien. Also leaving, his sister, Angela Chidley and family of Renews and sister-in-law Alice Kavanagh and family of Calvert. All our cousins on the Kavanagh and Walsh sides, especially Michelle Chaisson, Alicia Hayden and Tracy Costello and their families, whom dad thought the world of.

Dad was a passionate fisherman and fishing remained in his heart up until the very end. Aside from fishing, dad took great pride in his community, serving as Mayor of Ferryland for 16 years. He was active in his Church; served on Parish Council; the Fishermen's Committee and was instrumental in forming the Volunteer Fire Department. He served over the years on the School Board, the Knights of Columbus and was an active member on the Cemetery Committee. Known and respected by many, Dad was a pillar of his community and the Southern Shore. A man who stood by his beliefs and was not shy in sharing his views. He taught us to stand up for what we believe in, even if not the popular belief.

For almost three years dad has been part of the Alderwood family. He so enjoyed his days there. Dad's face would light up whenever one of the workers would show up to assist him. The staff of Alderwood, as well as the residents, were so attentive and so loving towards him. For that, we will be eternally grateful.

Sincere thank you to Quality Home Care Service and their dedicated home care workers for their exceptional care of Dad for six years. A most heartfelt thank you to Georgina Walsh for giving dad six beautiful years of love and caring and for her continued visits to dad at Alderwood. The family will be forever grateful for your friendship, love and kindness shown to dad.

Thank you also goes out to Baltimore Pharmacy and the Public Health Nurses of Ferryland. A very special thank you to Dr. McGarry for his years of care; and to Dr. Melissa Angel for her care since Dr. McGarry retired; both who were just a phone call away. The world needs more doctors like both of you. Also, to doctors, nurses and staff of the Nephrostomy Clinic at the HSC for their exceptional care and respect shown to dad over the years.

Resting at Fahey's Funeral Home, Fermeuse, Saturday, September 14 from 6-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial on Monday, September 16 at 11 a.m. from Holy Trinity Church, Ferryland. Interment to follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Ferryland.

Alphonsus Kavanagh Jr. - (March 14, 1940 - April 13, 2021) - It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we say goodbye to a loving husband, Dad, Pop, Great Pop, brother and brother in law. Alphonsus Jr Kavanagh Age 81 (March 14,1940). Predeceased by his parents Alphonsus and Elizabeth Kavanagh, brother Leo, sister Evelyn, brother in law Martin and son in law Thomas. Leaving to mourn his loving wife and best friend Shirley of 57 years, Son Clyde, Daughters Dinah and Shawlene (Parminder). Grandchildren Lee (Nicole), Paul, Angela, Darcy, Laura and Dawson. Great Grandkids Lily and Alexander who he loved and adored. His beloved sisters Dolly and family, Sadie (Ron) and family, Bill (Doris) and family, Bernard and family and all the Gregory family.
Special thanks to public health nurse Michelle who was dedicated to his care. Dr. Peter Morry and the cardiology staff at Health Science Centre. Special thanks also to a good friend John Paul for helping out.
Visitation will be held at Ryan's funeral home, Bay Bulls on Saturday April 17th, 2021 from 10:00am- 2:00pm. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, funeral service and burial will be limited to family only. Burial will take place at Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland.
