We know very little about Bridget Leary. It is assumed that she was RC, being of Irish origins. And the marriage to John William Saunders, presumed to be Anglican, was thus unusal, as were their differences in station in life. It seems fairl clear that John William Saunders, who was not previously married so far as we can tell, had one and probably two illegitimate children by a pauper, so described, named May or Mary Martin, the second of these children being named John William and baptised the day before his marriage to Bridget. It is purely speculation but this adds up to a plausible theory that Bridget blackmailed John William into marrying her either by claiming that she too was pregnant or by threatening to expose his peccadillos publicly. There are no reported births of this couple and she appears to have died within a year or so because he finally married a "suitable" bride, Mary [Winter] Strachen, on 22 December 1830
