191121:

There are real problems with this marriage record, none the least of which is why should a woman of her age be marrying such a younger man. But also the names of her parents do not correspond with what we know of her parentage. And also she uses her maiden name on the register yet claims to be a widow. All in all, I believe that she has falsified all this information to cover up her illicit relationship(s) following the death of her first husband, William Webster, which resulted in at least four of her children.

Notes
General:
220910:

Today I also found a marriage record for William Aitken and Alison Dalrymple, widow. It reads: 1876 Marriages in the District of Canongate in the Burgh of Edinburgh, Page 43 1876 on the Twentieth day of April at 8 Dunbar's Close, Canongate Edinburgh, After Banns according to the form of the Church of Scotland Signed William Aitken, Railway Guard, Bachelor, 25, 1 Physic Gardens, Edinb.; Signed Alison Dalrymple, Widow, 43, same place. William Aitken, Hosier deceased and Janet Aitken, M. S. Borland; John Dalrymple, farm servant, deceased and Jane Dalrymple, M. S. Robertson, deceased Signed James Macnair, Minister of Canongate; Signed John Donaldson, witness, Christina Donaldson, witness 1876, April 21 at Edinburgh; Geo. McArthur, Asst. Registrar, GBM

These two were married in Edinburgh on 20th April 1876. This was undoubtedly the record that Aunt Jean found that made her think Alison Mitchell Dalrymple Webster remarried to William Aitken. However, upon further examination this does not hold up. The parents of the person who married William Aitken were John Dalrymple and Jane [Robertson] Dalrymple, not Hugh Dalrymple and Helen [McLay] Dalrymple. I cannot understand how this all fits. We know from Mary Laing Webster and James Minty's marriage certificate that her mother was by then Mrs. Aitken, so it would seem that she was indeed the person who married William Aitken. But if she was, then all the rest of Aunt Jean's family line for Mary Laing Webster, starting with her alleged grandparents, Hugh Dalrymple and Helen McLay Dalrymple, is incorrect.

This would be a massive error and needs to be carefully researched to work out what went wrong and what is the correct information for her ancestry.

Note the major difference in their ages -- he 25 and she 43. This is extremely unusual and makes me suspect that this was strictly a marriage of convenience, possibly to try and legitamise the existence of her younger children, born after their father's death. This proves that they were not the children of William Aitken as he would have been in his early teens when they were born.

201121:

I now believe that she falsified the names of her parents on her marriage record to deflect any shame that might otherwise come to them over the four illegitimate children she bore before marrying William Aitken. There can be no doubt that this was her marriage record because William Aitken, Stepfather, was the informant at the death of her son "Alexander Dalrymple or Webster, illegitimate".
