This person, who is known only from his burial record found online on the NGB website on May 12, 2020 by Kevin Reddigan (Mr John SAUNDERS - Ferryland - June 29 1790), could possibly be the brother of William Saunders, the presumed progenitor of all of the Ferryland and Aquaforte Saunders. But there is no other information to connect them at this time so I am not prepared to make this connection until such time as there is clearer evidence of their relationship. Since no age is given, it is also possible that this was a grandson of William, a son of Daniel and Mary perhaps.

• Owner: Schooner "Brothers" launched, 24 Jan 1835, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Saturday, 24 January 1835
"Men gone to Cape Broyle to launch Sander's Brothers, a new schooner." Once again, infuriatingly he fails to mention the man's forename as if there was only one man named Sanders on the shore. He does the same again a few days later when he says that "Sanders towed his new vessel from Cape Broyle". This wasn't the same man, Capt. Daniel Sanders, who launched his previous vessel, the ANN, in 1834 because he died that year. It seemed likely it was his nephew, John or more likely one of John's sons who were noted to be ship builders. Kevin Reddigan reports that John and his sons William and John Jr. were working on a shallop in 1800 for John Hill & Company. William, the eldest son, was the registered owner of the Coquette built locally in 1830. The latest vessel was registered in Dartmouth initially but the owner's name at that time is not given. It was later sold and owned by several St. John's and Fortune Bay businessmen at one time or another. It was a typical schooner, 49 feet long, 15 feet wide, 7 feet deep, with a gross tonnage of 47 Tonnes. But the truth of the original ownership comes a bit later when on Monday, 9 March 1835 Carter gives this exceptionally clear evidence concerning the attempts of sealing vessels to leave their local ports: "The ocean covered with lolly as far as can see. Coquette [which had attempted to leave two days prior] driven away to the south. John Sanders Jr. schooner not yet able to get out of the ice. She is nearly ready." Now we know that the two brothers, William and John Jr., each own a schooner headed for the ice that year. Though he does not name the schooner owned by John Jr., it cannot be other than the Brothers. Indeed, given its name, it is quite likely that the two brothers are joint owners of this vessel.\f3.

051121:

Her existence is only known from the Petty Harbour C of E record of the illegitimate birth of a daugther named Sally whose reported father was John Saunders. Since the birth was reported in Renews, this could be no one other than John William Saunders who operated a business in Renews for many years. At the time of the birth he was not married that we know of from any records seen. May was reported to be a pauper and it seems likely he seduced her or she was reduced to prostitution to feed herself.

280520:

Kevin Reddigan explains why James had to declare insolvency and his brother John William had to give up his premises:

"It would appear that James had tried to establish himself as a merchant?, and like many during the latter part of that decade, his enterprise failed. (It appears the same thing happened to John William Saunders who was established at Fermeuse but then he had to sign over his fishing rooms at Rumney's Cove to: Carter, Samuel and Co.)"

170620:

According to Robert Carter's diaries, the occasion of William Morry Le Messurier's birth and Christening was marked by a big party at the Le Messurier house on Feb. 12, 1846 which brought in guests from far and wide (e.g. Robert, James and Mary Carter from Ferryland but also Miss Brashaw from Placentia and Alan Goodridge and his wife and J. W. Saunders from Renews). The guests, or many of them, were then unable to head home because of a heavy gale, some of them staying in Caplin Bay and others making it as far as Ferryland the first day and then being detained again.

141121:

We know very little about Bridget Leary. It is assumed that she was RC, being of Irish origins. And the marriage to John William Saunders, presumed to be Anglican, was thus unusal, as were their differences in station in life. It seems fairl clear that John William Saunders, who was not previously married so far as we can tell, had one and probably two illegitimate children by a pauper, so described, named May or Mary Martin, the second of these children being named John William and baptised the day before his marriage to Bridget. It is purely speculation but this adds up to a plausible theory that Bridget blackmailed John William into marrying her either by claiming that she too was pregnant or by threatening to expose his peccadillos publicly. There are no reported births of this couple and she appears to have died within a year or so because he finally married a "suitable" bride, Mary [Winter] Strachen, on 22 December 1830
