On the Newfoundland's Grand Banks website there is an account of Three Arms island and the cemetery that was dedicated primarily to the family of James Norris. It quotes "Coastal Cruising Newfoundland" 1993, by Rob Mills:
"At one time this was the headquarters of the merchant James Norris, whose vessels traded throughout the bay...Norris was a Roman Catholic and had a small chapel built here for the use of his family (still standing in 1992)..."
Many of the facts from tombstones are incorporated here in the notes on each individual.
An article entitled "Moments in Time - A Cultural Portrait of Green Bay, Newfoundland", prepared by the Green Bay Economic Development Association in 1994 (Newfoundland Provincial Library Reference 971.8 M73 NC H (Ref) NC) contains a chapter on Three Arms. A few excerpts relateto James Norris and family:
"After Three Arms was settled, a man by the name of James Norris, originally from Waterford, Ireland, moved in from Petty Harbour - also toget involved in the fishery. He became a familiar large scale merchant....
When the business of Mr. Wells [John Wells, the first merchant to start up a business in the bay at Three Arms] died out, James Norris, an Irishman, took over the merchant requirements in the bay. He expanded, and had much larger and far reaching results. "

Three Arms Island is located near Little Bay, Green Bay, in western Notre Dame Bay, and "...was a thriving community but... after Confederation... many of the buildings were floated to such places as Harry's Harbour... At one time this was the headquarters of the merchant James Norris, whose vessels traded throughout the bay... Norris was a Roman Catholic and had a small chapel built here for the use of his family (still standing in 1992)..." [From "Coastal Cruising Newfoundland" (1993) by Rob Mills]

A few excerpts relate to James Norris and family. Some are recorded on the notes page of James Sr. Those references applicable to James Jr. are recorded here:
"Later, after passing the business over to his son, James Norris Jr.,branch businesses were set up all over Green Bay and White Bay. At the time Mr. Norris' operation was the only local one. Ships came from all over the bay to trade fish for goods.
He also had many ships built which were used in his business. Mr. Norris would send local ships, including his own, to St. John's with loads of fish, having them return with freight for his business. Also, ships would come from St. John's and other ports with shipments of freight to trade for fish. Fish was even exported all the way to Oporto, Portugal, by Mr. Norris.
When the Wells business died out, James Norris, son of the original James Norris, the Irishman, started a merchant and boat building business. With headquarters at Three Arms, he set up other branch businesses all around White Bay. He operated a fleet of fishing and trading vessels that were built at Three Arms. The first schooner was a 40 tonner, the Mary, built by a man by the name of Con Lake.
There were 24 boats built for Mr. Norris with such picturesque names as Irish Lass, Alright, Ready and Go, Ellie in the Bay, Bonanza, Rover's Bride, Merry Heart, and Fuchsia. In the year of Halley's Comet, 1910, Mr. Norris had three boats built at 16 tons each. He had one constructed for himself, named the Comet, one for the Stempleton family in Bonavista, named the Planet, and one for a Father Tickle, the Catholic priest in Conche, named the Mission.
These vessels were produced by Charlie and Thomas King of Harry's Harbour. They were also fitted with marine engines. The last schooner to be built at Three Arms for Mr. Norris was the Nell, produced by Abraham Rideout in 1916."

"My great-grandparents Norris [James Norris and Mary Ann Dower] & their children [5 of the 8-10; exact number is not certain]. My grandfather [John Norris] is directly behind his father. Son in uniform [Stephen C. Norris] was killed in World War I, I think."
[In fact Stephen C. Norris was indeed killed in WWI, on October 11, 1916, at Guedecourt France, having survived the terrible ballte of Beaumont Hamel in the Somme on July 1 of that year. Other people shown areAmbrose and Bernard - not sure which is which - and Nell. Other children died in childhood including Walter, James and William.]

From Twillingate Sun July-August 1894 on NGB website: "A large skiff belonging to Mr. James NORRIS, of Three Arms, while beating in Little Bay Bight yesterday, upset by a heavy squall of wind. There were two men and a boy in it at the time, but they all managed to get on the bottom of the skiff and remained there till rescued by Mr. FINLAY, and brought safely to shore. The names of the men were WEBBER and BOWERS, and the boy is a son of Mr. NORRIS." No idea of which son this referred unfortunately.
