Notes from John and John Wheeler:
Military Career Of Stephen Norris (From the Notes of Mary Philpott)
$Stephen worked in his father's extensive business from 1908 to 1911
$He enlisted as a Private and showed special aptitude for the training of men.
$He was promoted to Sergeant and retaining at St. John's.
$He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant.
$Before leaving for England, his platoon presented him with an address and a present in recognition of his services as trainer.
$On October 27, 1915, "quite a breezy scene developed at the RailwayStation this morning when the first train was leaving. Mr. James Norris, of Three Arms, father of Lieut. (Stephen Cassimer) Norris (#921) protested against the dispatch of his son and Lieut. Keegan (#766) in a mail car while a sleeper was provided for the four Protestant officers, Captain Montgomerie, Surgeon Lieut. Knight, and Lieut Rowsell and Gane (not commissioned from Ranks). A letter which we published last night showed that a baggage car was the only provision made for the former two officers, whereas a sleeper was provided for the latter. Mr. Norris expressed his willingness to pay the hire of a sleeper, or if necessary, buy one outright".
$"G" Company (77% from the outports) was the last full Company to proceed overseas in 1915 as a single draft. It left St. John's by special train on October 27, 1915, under the command of Captain Montgomerie, went by rail and boat to Quebec, and took passage on the H.M.T. Corsican (of the Allan Line). They disembarked at Devonport on November 9, 1915 and next morning arrived at a military camp at Gailes, a dozen miles from Ayr, where they were quartered in huts, for there was no space at the Regimental Depot.
$He was on strength for the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, July 1 1916, but was not wounded. He was not one of those who answered the Roll Call.
$He was killed by a shell on October 11, 1916 at Gueudecourt, one of nine who died when their trench blew in, killing all in it.
$He was one of 38 at Gueudecourt whose bodies were never found.
$He is named in the Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park.
$By October 20, 1916, Eric Ellis in Ayr had the information that "Lieut. S. Ebsary reported killed, also Norris, and others".
$On November 13, 1916, A. L. Hadow, Commanding Officer of the Newfoundland Regiment wrote the following: "Dear Mr. Norris, I have just been given your address so I want to write and offer you my deepest sympathy in the death of your son on October 11th. He was killed instantaneously by a big shell just as he was trying to rescue a man who had been buried in by another shell. His platoon had had a particularly bad time through very heavy shelling and there were only three survivors, and your son stuck to his trench in the most gallant manner. He was a most promising officer and I deeply regret his loss, and the only consolation I can offer you is that by his fine example he helped to hold our trenches under the most severe shell fire, in which the Regiment gained great credit, and your son by his death contributed in no small measure to the success of the Regiment. With my deepest sympathy to you, believe me. Yours sincerely,".
$From the St. Bonaventure's College Adelphian: "The foregoing extract epitomizes Steve's noble qualities ... we find no V.C. or D.C.M after his name to tell of his gallantry, we know that he valiantly played the game and that the memory of his valour will endure as long as there is one of his platoon left to tell of the heroic action in which he took such a prominent and honoured part. He was in his 25th year and like his College friend, Capt. J. Donnelly, he now sleeps the sleep of the brave somewhere in France".
$According to the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland, "the death of Stephen Norris left the Three Arms business without an heir apparent. The firm and the Norris Family left the village after the death of James in 1925. It being the main enterprise of the settlement, the place closed out".]

22062014:
For reasons unknown, while his military file is available and I have downloaded it from the NGB website, his actual attestation papers went missing. This is commented on in the file as it made for some difficulty in dealing with the insurance company after his death. The Attestation paper would have his actual date of death, among other facts I am missing.
There has been a book written about him called In The Field by Joan Sullivan, published by Breakwater Books in 2012. It was prompted by her reading of a play staged by the students of Gonzaga High Scool on his life and tragic death.
140615:
In his memoirs, Stanley Frost mentions Stephen twice:
A slow train from Boulogne took us to Ιtaples and thence on foot to the famous encampment known as the "bullring." Steve Norris and Jimmy Irvine, both old friends, and I occupied a tent together. [Norris was killed in action 16 October 1916 near Gueudecourt.] This establishment was created for the purpose of hardening Officers and Other Ranks before being sent to join their units at the Front.

and
Our Battalion had already arrived and were taking up positions when we reached their lines. I checked the siting of the Lewis Guns and just as we reached "D" Company a heavy calibre shell exploded in the trench killing two men including my devoted runner Phelan. The fact that he has no known grave and that his name is inscribed on the Beaumont Hamel Memorial indicates the type of shell the enemy was employing to break up further attacks. While I was unscathed, it was a severe shock and a tragic happening on the eve of an important battle in which I knew my responsibilities would not be light. Shortly after, Second Lieutenant Steve Norris, who was with me in the Officers' draft four months previous, was blown up in the same manner and his remains were never found.

220816:
According to Richard Cramm in "The First Five Hundred", "The day (Battle at Gueudecourt) was marked by heroic and daring conduct, and by the loss of some of the very best of the Regiment. Among those who fell were Captain Donnelly, whose steady nerve and heroism at Gallipoli have already been mentioned, Captain. O'Brien, Lieutenants Ebsary, Clift and Norris. These men and many others displayed a courage, fearlessness and defiance of danger that were fatal. They could not be stopped except ny death itself."
He was killed by a shell on October 11, 1916 at Gueudecourt

From Gail Howell:
went back to the Archives to recheck the books. The information that is documented for Harry and William Norris is wrong. I spoke with the staff there and they recommended, I go to see the Reverend, but they also said they didn't thing he would have any other information to give to me. I will try the church next week.
In the meantime, I decided to check the Vital Statistics death records on the NGB website. I discovered that there was a child died named William Norris, he died July 4th, 1905 and that he was 15 months old. It also said he died from convulsions and that he lived on Hamilton Ave. That would have made the twins born sometime around 1904. He was buried at the Anglican Cemetery. That would be the St. Thomas' Anglican Cemetery on Forest Rd.

200212 from Gail Howell:
Received some pictures and documents from a cousin in the US, concerning my Gr. Grandparents (Norris). With the info I received from her I was able to get birth certificates for my Grandmother and one of her sisters. She has since asked me to get more Birth Certificates for their other siblings, but has no info, only the names. I have to try and find some info about these people before I approach the church. The Norris's lived on Hamilton Ave, here in the city and I think that is where most of the children were born. Through some of my recent research, I discovered that some of the Carey's lived at 427 Water St. Interesting!!..
