The gravestone photographed by Jamie at Kilkeary Cemetery in 2016 reads:

"In loving memory of Thomas O'Brien Grawn died 23rd April 1918 and his wife Mary died 27th Nov 1932. Also Kate O'Brien Ballinalick died 5th Feb 1928. And her husband Morgan died 28th Feb 1939."

Note that the year of death of Mary is in error. She actually died on 27th Nov. 1931 according to the Civil Registration of Death declared by Joe O'Brien at the time.

General:
271207: This marriage was brought to my attention today by Jamie. She was of the impression (as were her siblings evidently) that her grandfather was married before the marriage to Mary O'Meara.

I then found two marriage records on the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre website and downloaded them for 5 Euros each today.

The theory had it that the first wife died soon after they were married and that there were no children by the first marriage. In an apparent error, the name of Mary Farrell is shown as the mother of James O'Brien, Jamie's uncle, on his baptismal record dated 030201. That would be impossible, because by then Thomas O'Brien would have remarried and had already two sons by that presumed second marriage, William on 17091898 and Patrick Joseph on 17031900.

The picture became clear when the two virtually identical marriage records were compared. They pertained to the same marriage of Thomas O'Brien and Mary Farrell only the civil record showed that her name was actually Mary O'Meara and she was the widow of a man named Farrell at the time of her marriage to Thomas O'Brien

200208: Fergus Kennedy found this record in the Toomevara parish microfilm. It confirms that the great grandfather who married a Quirke was the O'Meara man, not the O'Brien man "xx ( sic ) Sept 1861; Mary of Wm.Meara & Ellen Quirke, Grawn Patt Fogarty & Mary Fogarty, sponsors P.Hurley"

121108: Email from Jamie: "Mary O'Meara and Farrell had no kids. There was Daddy (Patk Joseph, James and William and an older William who died - scalded by a bucket of hot water that he fell over). Dad was then the oldest by O'Meara's marriage to Tom O'Brien."

180113: There is a discrepancy in the year of birth with the church record showing 1861 according to Fergus Kennedy and the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre version which shows her christened on Sept. 1862. I think that Fergus may have made an error but I won't know until I can view the same microfilm of the original church register that he was reading. It seems unlikely that a Catholic child would be left unbaptised for a whole year.
