From - The Telegram, St. John's, Newfoundland, March 28, 2015
Captain Thomas (Tommy) O'Brien - We are deeply saddened and heart broken to announce the tragic passing of Captain Thomas (Tommy) O'Brien on March.15th, Age 50. The beloved husband of 27 years to his wife Dinah; a devoted and extremely proud father to Lee (Nicole) and Laura both of whom he adored. Predeceased by his grandmother who raised him, Mrs. Maggie O'Brien. The mutual respect and love that existed between them was easy for all to see and she is surely taking care of him now. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his mother Marge Carew, his brother Dion (Julie) who was always by his side; his three sisters: Darlene (Dave), Susan and Gail. His step-father, Don Carew. Always holding a special place in Tommy's heart were his uncles, aunt and cousins that he grew up with at his grandmother's home in Cape Broyle. Tommy always considered his uncles, Richie and Robbie, and his aunt, Marlie as siblings; his cousins Cheryl and Nancy, as nieces. His father-in-law and mother-in-law Alphonsus and Shirley Kavanagh, brother-in-law Clyde; sister-in-law Shawlene (Parminder) and a large circle of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. He will surely be missed in the hearts of his favourite little buddies - Kailem, Reid, Jason, Anna and Haley. And by his special niece Olivia. Captain O'Brien will also be missed greatly by his extended family at the Canadian Coast Guard. Captain Tom was a lover of the sea and had a long and respected career with over 30 years of service to his country, joining the Coast Guard in 1984. He was the youngest ever-appointed Captain with the Coast Guard achieving that status at the age of 28. A few of his many accomplishments in his career involved the recovery operation after the bombing of the Air India Flight 182 and the seizure of the Portuguese fishing vessel Santa Mafalda and arrest of it's master as a result of fishing within the 200 mile limit without authorization. His absence amongst his colleagues and employees will be felt for a long time. Cremation and a Celebration of Life have already taken place. A service with the Canadian Coast Guard will be scheduled for a later date.

Research note - The Barretts Funeral Home obit gives DOD as March 17, 2015. Conformation needed.

• Census: 1901 Census - Household of Thomas O'Brien, Farmer, 31 Mar 1901, Garrane, Latteragh, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland.

• Census: 1901 Census of Eliza O'Brien and 3 sons but not Thomas, 31 Mar 1901, Glenawinna, Aghnameadle, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. Note that son Thomas is NOT on this Census return because he is married with three sons and recorded accordingly in Garrane, Latteragh, Tipperary.

• Census: 1911 Census of Ireland, 2 Apr 1911, Garrane, Latteragh, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. On this Census, Thomas is shown with his wife Mary and three sons as before plus two labourers, John Maher and John Eagen. He is a farmer in Garrane, Latteragh and aged 55, which is not in accord with the age given on the 1901 Census (42). I am not sure which Census, if either, is correct.

• Alt. Death: 23 Apr 1918, Grawn, Toomevara, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. 040422:

Marriage Events

• Minister/Priest: Fogarty and/or Michael Murray, C.C., 19 May 1897, Toomevara, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. Different priest's names appear on the civil and church records of the marriage. Probably one was the parish priest and the other the curate who actually celebrated the mass.

Notes
General:
271207: Jamie had always been of the impression that her grandfather, Thomas O'Brien, had married twice - first to Mary Farrell (though she was notcertain of the Christian name), and then shortly thereafter when she had died he married again to Mary O'Meara. In her understanding of thesituation, there were no children by the marriage to Mary Farrell. I was therefore surprised to find (on the NTGC website) a baptismal record for James O'Brien dated 3 February 1901 giving the mother's name asMary Farrell. Since this post-dated the birth of Jamie's father, who was definitely the son of Thomas O'Brien and the purported second wife, Mary O'Meara, this made no sense. How could his first wife give birth to a child after his second wife did?

It was only when I downloaded two different versions of the marriage of Thomas O'Brien in Toomevara on May 19, 1897, the religious and civil records, that the facts became clear to me. Mary Farrell and Mary O'Meara are one and the same person. She was married twice, first to a man named Farrell, and was a widow at the time that she married ThomasO'Brien. Thus the name of the mother on the birth record of James O'Brien was partially correct in that it used her name by her first husband rather than her maiden name. Contrary to former belief then, ThomasO'Brien was only married once, to Mary Farrell, a widow born Mary O'Meara. See the two marriage records in PDF format in the media.

071108: On the 1901 Census his family is shown as occupying a house of 5 rooms with 7 out-buildings. On the 1911 Census the number of rooms has increased to 6 but the out-buildings are the same. Thomas O'Brien is shown as the owner.

Interestingly, although the family had four children, with the first William dying after the 1901 Census, on the 1911 Census they report that they only had three children born alive and 3 still living. It appears there may have been some sensitivity in the family about the manner in which the first William died (by accidental scalding).

090610: The 1901 and 1911 Censuses are now available online through the National Archives of Ireland. Here is the information on the family from the abbreviated report given there:

Residents of a house 8 in Garrane (Latteragh, Tipperary) Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language Marital Status Specified Illnessesr O'Brien Thomas 42 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic Co Tipperary Farmer Read and write - Married O'Brien Mary 38 Female Wife Roman Catholic Co Tipperary - Read and write - Married O'Brien William 3 Male Son Roman Catholic Co Tipperary Farmers Son Cannot read - Not Married O'Brien Patrick J 1 Male Son Roman Catholic Co Tipperary Farmers Son Cannot read - Not Married O'Brien James Male Son Roman Catholic Co Tipperary Farmers Son Cannot read - Not Married Gilmartin Mary 16 Female Domestic Servant Roman Catholic Co Tipperary Domestic Servant Read and write - Not Married -

130513 Although the townland of residence at the time of his death is not given for Morgan, since Morgan and his wife appear to be buried in the same plot with his brother Thomas and his wife, or at least they are all memorialised on the same stone, and since Thomas's abode is given as Grawn at the time of his death, I suspect that they were all living together on the one farm in Grawn at the time of their deaths. I cannot therefore understand why Morgan and Kate do not appear on the above census record.

Noted from David Stevens:

1901 census in house 8 in Garrane (Latteragh); also present a domestic servant Mary GILMARTIN. 1901 census in house 9 in Garrane (Latteragh); also present domestic servants (labourers) John MAHER and John EAGAN.

030617:
The gravestone photographed by Jamie at Kilkeary Cemetery in 2016 reads:

"In loving memory of Thomas O'Brien Grawn died 23rd April 1918 and his wife Mary died 27th Nov 1932. Also Kate O'Brien Ballinalick died 5th Feb 1928. And her husband Morgan died 28th Feb 1939."
