There are two marriages recorded for a Jane Powdrell, one in 1852 and another in 1872. I am uncertain as to whether both of thes apply to this person and so have not recorded them here until it becomes more certain based upon other evidence.

220910:
The information on the parentage of Frederick Powdrell which I downloaded today from the Diack-Donaldson family tree on MyAncestry.com George Powdrell and Sarah Fox) has proven incorrect. I obtained a copy of the marriage certificate of Frederick and Marion and it shows different names for his parents (John Powdrell and Susan Hossy ( Flossy?). I am therefore removing the information I took from that family tree altogether to avoid confusion.
020325:
That said, the 1861 Census gives only a few names of the children found on the 1871 census and also includes names that do not appear at all on the 1871 census so it is possible that there are two families in this vicinity named John and Susan Powdrell that are being mixed up.

Despite the testimony in court of his abuse by his mother because he was simple, he was accepted into the Royal Navy in late 1914 and even transferred into the more hazardous mine sweeping duty in early 1915.

280825:
Today I received from Graham Maxwell at Scottishindexes.com the complete file on the admission of Lily Powdrell to the asylum on Sept. 8, 1915. It is a frightening report, starting with the fact that Lily's status as a pauper as well as a "lunatic" played a large roll in her admission to this facility, where she apparently spent the remainder of her life (21 years). Her sexual behaviour also was itemised as proof of her lunacy, as was her incontinence.
One wonders what society would do with a person as described here today. Most likely, they would be left to fend for themselves and would probably come to a sad end on the streets.
