Note that on her death record it is mentioned that she was the sister of Thomas Hutcheon Minty. At first I thought that was because he was the respondant at the time of her death but then discovered that he died in infancy. I now suspect that this means she was buried in the same grave with him.

This newspaper article sent to me today by Kati McMillan is extremely shocking and sad. Mom Morry's sister, after whom she was named in part as well as in part after her sister's husband (this Fredris Marion Powdrell Minty) was an alcoholic and a child abuser to her mentally defient eldest son, John William Powderell. This court case describes in graphic detail the extent of her depravity.

She was given a week in jail for this charge.

Though she had been found on the street and was considered a destitute pauper, Lily also gave this as her address. It seems likely that her mother threw her out as she had previously done to her simple-minded son, John.

Stated in several newspaper articles provided to me by Kati McMillan today that Marion Logie Minty was a drunkard and that she drove away her husband. Though he continued to pay £1 a week support for the children she was supposed to have pawned their clothes to buy liquor. She was also said to have turned out their eldest son, John William Powdrell, who was simple and he wound up in a paupers hostel.

In a letter to Aunt Jean dated Dec. 12, 1957 Mary wrote that she inherited her ex-husband's house and fruit farm in Florida. Later in 1962 she wrote that she was able to take a trip home to Scotland in 1960 with the money she received from the sale of the estate.

Note that there is a conflict in the dates of the emigration from Scotland of several members of this family, including Mina, Thomas and Marion. They are all shown as emigrating in 1893 on the 1920 Census. But on the 1910 Census no date is given for Marion or Mina and Thomas is shown as emigrating in 1903 while his brother Edward only came in 1909. I think the latter is more likely to be correct due to their appearing on an 1901 Census in Scotland.
