It should be noted that although there are many instances where this marriage is presumed to have taken place (e.g. Alison's subsequent marriage to William Aitken, the death record of Alison and some of the children attributed to William, etc.) there is no record of the marriage either in the civil or church registers available on Scotland's People. Nor is there any indication of birth records for the first children, including William and Hugh. It seems to lead to the conclusion that they never actually married or if they did so it was after having had several children out of wedlock.Marriage Events

191121:
There are real problems with this marriage record, none the least of which is why should a woman of her age be marrying such a younger man. But also the names of her parents do not correspond with what we know of her parentage. And also she uses her maiden name on the register yet claims to be a widow. All in all, I believe that she has falsified all this information to cover up her illicit relationship(s) following the death of her first husband, William Webster, which resulted in at least four of her children.
Notes
General:
Birthdate contentious (11th or 12th of May 1831).
160410:
On marriage record of daughter Mary Laing Webster it shows her name as "Alison Aitken, formerly Webster, M. S. Mitchell." The latter is short for Maiden Surname. But so far as we know, her maiden name was in fact Dalrymple, with Mitchell being her second name. Her Christian name is spelled with one "l".
It never occurred to me before to question how it is that there are three sons and a daughter in this family who were born long after their father apparently died.
220910:
Apparently, after the death of her husband, Alison Dalrymple moved into the house of her brother Robert with her family of 6 children. That is where she is found in the 1861 Census, going by her maiden name for some reason. It shows her as a wife but also a widow, which is confusing. Someone has also written in after the census taker finished his notes that she was a former miner's wife. That may have been an assumption apparently based upon confusion that she was a former wife of Robert, the head of the household, who was in fact her brother, not her husband. William Webster was a cabinet maker, according to some information, but apparently could not make a go of it because later in life he was reported to be a miner.
What appears to have happened is that after William Webster died, Alison at first moved in with her brother Robert but then remarried to a man named Aitken many years later. It was possibly by him that the three sons who were born after the death of William Webster were conceived but I have no idea why Aunt Jean's records showed their surname as Webster and not Aitken. The second marriage was solemnized or at least registered as I have downloaded a copy of the register.
On the 1871 Census Alison is living without a husband again under her original married name, shown as a widow. Almost all of her living children are with her (two sons died at birth). Her three eldest sons are the breadwinners, working as coal miners. There is no mention of William Aitken at this point. They were married after that, but that still leaves unanswered who was the father of her three youngest sons, whom she has given the name Webster years after William Webster's death.
Today I also found a marriage record for William Aitken and Alison Dalrymple, widow. It reads: 1876 Marriages in the District of Canongate in the Burgh of Edinburgh, Page 43 1876 on the Twentieth day of April at 8 Dunbar's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh, After Banns according to the form of the Church of Scotland Signed William Aitken, Railway Guard, Bachelor, 1 Physic Gardens, Edinb.; Signed Alison Dalrymple, Widow, same place. William Aitken, Hosier deceased and Janet Aitken, M. S. Borland; John Dalrymple, farm servant, deceased and Jane Dalrymple, M. S. Robertson, deceased Signed James Macnair, Minister of Canongate; Signed John Donaldson, witness, Christina Donaldson, witness 1876, April 21 at Edinburgh; Geo. McArthur, Asst. Registrar, GBM
This was undoubtedly the record that Aunt Jean found that made her think Alison Mitchell Dalrymple Webster remarried to William Aitken. However, upon further examination this does not add up. The parents of the person who married William Aitken were shown as John Dalrymple and Jane [Robertson] Dalrymple, not Hugh Dalrymple and Helen [McLay] Dalrymple. I cannot understand how this all fits. We know from Mary Laing Webster and James Minty's marriage certificate that her mother was by then Mrs. Aitken, so it would seem that she was indeed the person who married William Aitken. But if she was, then all the rest of Aunt Jean's family line for Mary Laing Webster, starting with her alleged grandparents, Hugh Dalrymple and Helen McLay Dalrymple, is incorrect.
This would be a massive error and needs to be carefully researched to work out what went wrong and what is the correct information for her ancestry.
Note the major difference in their ages -- he 25 and she 43. This is extremely unusual and makes me suspect that this was strictly a marriage of convenience, possibly to try and legitimise the existence of her younger children, born after their father's death. This proves that they were not the children of William Aitken as he would have been in his early teens when they were born.
260910: This is a response from Karen Chapman in regard to the name Mitchell being Alison Dalrymple's middle name and how Aunt Jean came upon this information though it does not appear in most records observed:
" think we can safely say that Allison Dalrymple was the mother of Mary Laing Webster. The Name Allison Mitchell Dalrymple comes from a document Mom received early on from the Scots Ancestral society. It is the official death certificate from the General Registry Office in Edinburgh. It states that Mary Laing Minty died Jun 21, 1915 father William Webster Cabinet Maker, and mother Allison Mitchell Aitken, previously Webster, M. S. Dalrymple. See attached document.
The above is where Mom probably found the spelling for Laing and found the middle name of Mitchell for Allison. In a letter from Aunt Mary ( Fredris' sister). She talks about her lineage and says her mother was Mary Laing ( with an i) Webster. But it doesn't really matter. Lang or Laing it is still her.
In reading a letter from Mom's uncle James Minty I noticed that he lived at 26 Robertson Ave, Edinburgh. Could he have been a witness and the info put into the wrong boxes? Stranger things have happened. There is also a descendant who married into a Robertson family. I really don't have a good answer to the Robertson issue, but some kind of mistake obviously was made."
On the basis of this evidence I am convinced that an error was made on the marriage record of Alison Mitchell [Dalrymple] Webster, widow, when she married William Aitken. It showed that her parent's were John Dalrymple and Jane Robertson, wrong on both counts. Why, we may never know, but since she was illiterate she too would never have known that this error was made on her marriage register entry.
280910: Linda Merle provided a copy of her original hand-written death registry entry. Here it showed her as Alison Mitchell Aitken, formerly Webster, née Dalrymple, confirming the middle name, the two marriages and her maiden name as we have agreed them to be through recent investigations. However, it once again shows her father's name as John, not Hugh, though it correctly identifies her mother as Helen McLay. The source of this information is her son-in-law, James A. Minty. It is quite likely that he gave the wrong name for the father of his mother-in-law and may never have known it.

111213:
In collaboration with Peter Webster, I have come to the conclusion that all four of Alison Mitchell Dalrymple's children after Thomas (Elizabeth Dalrymple Webster, Alexander Dalrymple Webster, Robert Webster and Archibald Webster) were illegitimate. They were born after the death of her first husband, William Webster, and long before her marriage to her second husband, William Aitken. In fact, Peter was able to provide a birth register for Elizabeth which shows that she was illegitimate. I had formerly thought that these children may have been the product of a liaison between Alison and William Aitken prior to their marriage but none of them bear his surname and he was far too young at the time, so it seems highly unlikely. A third, unknown father (or possibly multiple fathers) were responsible for these children. Owing to the long gap between marriages and the number of children born between those marriages (4) it seems entirely plausible that Alison was forced into a life of prostitution to support her large and growing family. Going against this theory somewhat is the fact that she is shown as an agricultural labourer on the birth record of Elizabeth, the first of the illegitimate children. But there is no profession shown on the birth (or death) registers of the other three.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
140921:
On the 1881 Census, the first one in which Alison appears as the wife of William Aiken, it mistakenly or deliberately masks the age difference between them by showing her to be 35 to his 30. On the 1891 Census, the two of them are now living alone with no children present and in this census she is shown to be 55, still short of her true years but closer (she should be 60). He is shown to be 40, which is more or less correct. The mystery behind this marriage continues as there is no reasonable explanation for such a large age difference in a married couple in those days.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
191121:
Alison's last four children were all noted as illegitimate on their birth records and no father was named. Her last two sons, named Robert and Archibald, were a twin and were either stillborn or died immediately after their premature birth according to their death register entries. One has to wonder if this was perhaps not an abortion.

So it is clear from this evidence that Alexander Duncan was the father of Elizabeth Burton (or Burden) Dalrymple, though he and Alison Michell Dalrymple Webster never married. What is not clear is what role, if any, he played in the conception of the three other children of Alison born after the death of her first husband and before the marriage to her second husband.

Twin of Robert; both stillborn evidently.
220910:
It isn't clear who the father of Elizabeth, Alexander, Archibald and Robert was but it certainly wasn't William Webster as he died in 1860. Most likely it was William Aitken, but why Aunt jean had their surname recorded as Webster is anyone's guess. Perhaps Alison Dalrymple Webster did not marry William Aitken but had children by him and gave them her own married name to avoid gossip.
111213:
The above is now disproven. William Aitken was far too young to have been the father of these children. It is worthy of note that the child was noted as illegitmate on the birth register and that the surname given was that of the mother, Dalrymple. Only later did he and three other siblings born after the death of William Webster receive his name in some documents.
140921:
Note that on his and his brother Robert's birth and baptism civil registers there is no father named and the mother is shown as Allison Dalrymple OR Webster. This tells a great deal without actually coming out and saying it in so many words. The boys were illegitimate.

Notes
General:
200910:
Whilst viewing the 1871 Census, I discovered for the first time that Alison had another child named Elizabeth who was also apparently born out of wedlock after her husband William Webster's death. Once again, it is not known if the father was William Aitken, who later appears to be her husband or someone else whose name has never been mentioned. I was clued into the existence of Elizabeth because she appears as a witness at her sister Mary Laing Webster's wedding as Lizzie Dalrymple Webster.
111213:
It is worthy of note that the child was noted as illegitmate on the birth register and that the surname given was that of the mother, Dalrymple. Only later did she and three other siblings born after the death of William Webster receive his name in some documents. The father could not have been William Aitken. He was much too young at the time.
201121:
Elizabeth's daughter Alison was the Informant on her mother's death record and she gave the name of her mother's parents as "William Webster, Coal Miner (deceased) and Alison Webster afterwards Aitken, M. S. Dalrymple (deceased)". Either she had not been told that her mother was illegitimate and born after William Webster's death or she deliberately hid that fact.
It is also worthy of note that her middle name was Burton. Since she was the first of her mother's four illegitimate children, and since the name Burton does not appear in this family before or afterwards, it is reasonable to assume that this was the real name of her birth father.
