From Michael Rennie, 280220:

David Rennie showed up in Newfoundland 1790 and seems to be a replacement for a Stuart relative of David's partners John Stuart and John's son James. (The Stuart relative is in Newfoundland jury lists for the late 1780s and is on one ship registration record or something like that connecting him to John Stuart's business.) David Rennie went to Edinburgh temporarily to marry William Eppes Cormack's widowed mother at about the time of John Stuart's death and helped settle the Stuart estate while he was there. That widowed mother is the daughter of Robert McAuslan.

David Rennie invested in 21,000 acres on Prince Edward Island when he left Newfoundland for Glasgow with his family in 1810. David's brother-in-law was left in charge but the lawyer messed up law cases involving the land and so nothing much happened at first. The Napoleonic Wars made the fishing industry very successful while it lasted but all of the Irish fishermen brought to Newfoundland suffered badly when the war ended and the boom ended. Many nephews of David Rennie's wife went bankrupt, some owing to having uncollectable debts owed them by Newfoundland fishermen. (These nephews were sons of Robert Wright, a brewer in Haddington) David Rennie diversified and seems to have been planning on settling people on his Prince Edward Island land and using the lumber from farm clearing to build a his building business. However those plans ended when his wife died in 1821 and he had pay out the Cormack inheritance. David himself died in 1823. 3750
