Letter he wrote to his cousin Viola Uphill upon the death of her mother dated 21/7/1941. This letter was transcribed by Jean Carter Stirling and given to me in 2014:
21/7/1941, to Viola Uphill, Salisbury. (This copy received from Viola's estate by John Carter, Mount Scio, St. John's, NL, her nephew.)
Dear Viola,
Many thanks for your kind letter telling me the sad news from Newfoundland. I am very sorry to hear of the death of Gladys Carter. The last I heard about her was two years ago when she had an operation. I do not know the nature of this but I suppose it to be the result of the trouble there was then. I am writing to Viola Carter by this post. I think I never met Gladys. Her two sisters Viola and Susanna came over with George* when we were living in London and I remember them. It is difficult to keep in lively touch with Newfoundlanders unless one meets them now and then. My sister Alice who went to Nfld for a visit used to write about them. But she has been dead now many years. You will feel the loss keenly I expect, and also your father. He is I hope well. You seem to have had more than one move in your district. My address book has alterations. Is the address on this correct? My grandson you remember, Ronald John had his 22nd Birthday last week. His brother is in the R.A.F. and they have sent him to the University of Cambridge for a half year free of cost, which is very good for him. He is called Michael. The youngest, Rex, is still at Highgate School, which has been transferred to Westward Ho. You speak of "Katie", do you mean your Aunt? Or is there another of this name. Here are some notes from my pedigree table. Let me know if you agree the names and dates, or if you have any alterations or additions to make to it. I expect you know it all. My wife, I am sorry to tell you, is quite an invalid; and to add to her trouble had a bad fall on the cement floor of the passage of this cottage and damaged her knee badly. It is bandaged so that she can only hobble about. But the Doctor thinks it is getting better a little. And in this beautiful summer, too! You came to see us at N. Bovey I remember. Perhaps you may be coming West again. We have no guess room in this cottage however, to which we could invite you. These are no days for travel. I want to get to Clifton, only travel is too difficult. I have an old cousin there who is ill. I hope you are free from air alarms. We get frequent sirens, for we are on the way to Bristol & Wales. But we have had bombs only two or three times. One however destroyed the Hospital across the river at Teignmouth and several houses there and in Torquay. Sleepless nights do not suit us at all. My wife joins me in sending you all kind wishes and to your Father also.
Yours affectionately,
(signed) J. Carter Rendell [Rev. James Carter Rendell of Teignmouth]
I remember Edwin Carter -- what became of him?
*George Carter, St. John's, was the father of Grace, Viola, Katie, Susanna, Gladys and Alan Carter. The above letter is addressed to Viola, the daughter of Rev. Henry Uphill. Viola's mother was George Carter's daughter Grace. (SEE Carter Tree)
See letter in paper file from him, dated 1941 to Viola Uphill. He ment ions
three grandchildren, Ronald John 22 on 14/7/1941. Michael in the RAF , Rex the
youngest still at school(no surname mentioned).
He was the Rev. James Carter Rendell, probably baptized in England. He
officiated at his sister's marriage to E.C.Elderton in London, England , 1889.
