Mr. J. Sexton, a well-known local farmer, met with a severe accident while driving from Bendigo on Monday evening. When within about a mile of his home, Mr. Sexton the horse with the whip, and the animal lashed out, smashing the front of the buggy. Mr. Sexton was thrown on the roadway, while the horse careered madly along the road, finally dashing the buggy against a tree. Mr. Sexton sustained severe cuts on the head and hand. One of his ears was almost torn off. He was taken to the Heathcote Hospital where the injuries were attended to by Dr. Reid. It is a singular coincidence that the accident Mr. Sexton's nephew, John Barrington, met with the cycling mishap a few weeks ago.

Notes
General:
070217 from Anthony Ludington's Sexton Family History file:

John Edward Sexton was the second child of Cornelius Sexton (1) and Mary Sexton (4) nee Purcell. John Edward Sexton married Catherine Helena Cullen on 15th February 1886 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Lancefield Vic. The marriage was celebrated by the Rev Father Galbolen and the witnesses were Catherine's brother Thomas and her sister Theresa. Upon their marriage certificate Catherine is described as being a farmer's daughter and is 20 years of age whilst John is described as a farmer and being of 28 years of age. After their marriage, John Edward and Catherine settled at Toolleen Vic where together they carried out farming on the property of their father Cornelius.

The couple had 14 children these being Cornelius (26) B1/1/1887, Lucy Mable Ethel (27) B14/4/1888, John Charles Vincent (48) B11/9/1890, Catherena Mary (50) B22/11/1891, Caroline Elizabeth Ruby (138) 4/1/1893, Thomas Kevin (139) B21/9/1893, James Martin (140) B7/4/1897, Walter Patrick (141) B7/4/1897, Sussanah Ruby Elizabeth (313) B18/10/1899, Kevin Joseph Aloysius (318) B25/11/1901, Veronica Mary (319) B16/3/1903, Edward (Ned) Leo (320) B26/11/1905, Hilary Percival (331) B3/3/1907 and Eileen Alicia (344) B1908.

In the Sexton family older children were always excited about the birth of a new baby, not because it meant having a new brother or sister but rather the stout, Protestant, Scottish midwife would come to the home to assist with the birth. Now this midwife a Protestant as she was, could not help but get into arguments with John Edward who was very Irish and very Catholic. In fact it is said that on the occasion of the Birth of Bong (Kevin) in November 1901, the Protestant midwife informed John (or Mr Sexton as she called him) that Rome was built on the top of hell! To this bigoted remark John replied calmly and with some politeness, "Yes, and all the bloody Protestants are in it" (no doubt meaning hell).Of course the children were always sent out of sight, but they still managed to hear these hotly debated arguments between the Irishman and the Scottish midwife. The arguments between these two were not to cease for a few more years as they met on several more occasions.

In 1912, John Edward Sexton was elected to the Waranga Shire Council. He served a term of 10 months before his death on 8/6/1913 aged 58 years. In his Obituary published in the Bendigo Advertiser on 11/6/1913. It also stated that John was a much respected and loved throughout the district. John's popularity was shown by his election to the Waranga Shire Council and the large turnout for his funeral. The Bendigo Advertiser further stated that it had been John's lifelong ambition to serve on the council. Before he died he had asked his son John (Jack) to replace him on the council and at the next election Jack was elected to take his father's seat. John Edward is buried at the Runnymede Cemetery Vic, near his mother, sons and brother.
