Mary Teresa was a child of John Purcell (4) and Catherine Heenan (3) nee Heenan. Mary Teresa married Cornelius Sexton (1) on 8/9/1851 in the Catholic Church in Cape Town South Africa. In 1852 she came to Victoria with her husband Cornelius (1). The couple had six children all born in Victoria they were Mary (6) B1853, John Edward (22) B10/10/1855, Patrick (361) B1858, Margaret Cecilla (362) B1860, Cornelius (392) B1862 and Elizabeth (416) B1864.
Arriving in Long Gully in Bendigo at the height of the Gold Rush must have been a trying time for Mary. You would have been living in a tent or a bush hut if you were lucky and there were no modern amenities such as running water, sealed roads or toilet facilities. That all of her children survived is a credit to her. Also the move to Toolleen would have meant starting all over again building a house and developing the farm from scratch. The nearest main town's being Muskerry or Elmore.
Mary died on 13^th of July 1908 aged 88 after being nursed and cared for by her husband Cornelius (1). She died in her son Cornelius's (392) (Con) home the Forest Creek Hotel Muskerry Vic near Toolleen Vic which he was leasing at the time. Mary is buried with her husband Cornelius (1) in the Runnymede Cemetery Vic.

It is with extreme regret we have to record the death of another of the oldest Toolleen identities, in the person of Mrs Mary Sexton (4) the wife of Mr Cornelius Sexton (1) , which sad event took place at the Forest Creek Hotel, the residence of her son (Cornelius 392), on Sunday, the 12^th inst. The deceased had obtained the ripe age of 88 years, was with her husband amongst the earliest settlers in the district and by her quite, obliging disposition made a large number of friends. The late Mrs Sexton was very healthy and active until the last few months and although carefully nursed by her husband and family, the general break up carried her off as stated. The funeral to the Runnymede Cemetery on Tuesday was largely attended by a number of friends and neighbours. Her remains wee enclosed in a beautiful oak coffin and were borne to their last resting place by Messrs LJ Tuohey, D,
