Based largely on the fact that he shows up in the 1901 census as a grocer (almost certainly the correct man due to location and the name of his wife - Alice), I am today concluding that he is also the same person found at home with his family in the 1891 Census in Brechin, where he was believed to have been born. This in turn is supported by earlier Censuses in the same area for the same family. It is not 100% certain but is a pretty fair certainty. So I am adding details on his family from these censuses today.

Probate found on Ancestry.ca today shows that James Sturrock Stormont had a son, Alexander Bert Stormont, to whom probate was granted rather than his spouse, inclining me to suspect that they may have been divorced or separated at the time of his death.

There is a problem here. Although the man to whom this record pertains was named James Sturrock Stormont, there is another record for a man of the same name with a wife named Alice living in 1935-1936 at 74 Meadowhouse Rd., Corstorphine, Edinburgh. I am certain that this is the couple. Therefore I am deleting the record of probate and the son to whom probate was granted. It clearly must have been a man with the same name, as unlikely as that seems.
