In letter to her Aunt Mary in March 1942, Chris mentions that she and Dougie have been married almost 13 years. Marriage Notes

Event Description: Sherriff Court House

290819:

According to Christine: " mother and father had a very unhappy marriage and mum and I left the house when I was 17 (on the advice of Norman who was by then in the police force). Nobody told us when my father died and I phoned Douglas and he told me 'my mother left my father, I want nothing to do with you and I want nothing to do with my mother'! Such cruel words especially as he was a Kirk Elder."

Notes
General:
050315:

In a letter written to her aunt Mary Bailey in 1942 she mentions that at the time she and her family are living with her mother and father at their home at 26 Robertson Ave.

150816:

Karen Chapman gave me this information on letters from Chrissie Minty Taylor to her mother, Aunt Jean:

"I just looked at the letters that I have from Chris. One was written from Calder Court, Sighthill, Edinburgh (not dated) and says that she stayed with her Aunt Alice from 4 years to 12 owing to family circumstances. She says she adored Uncle Jim. Chris stated that she would love to trace her family tree, but all she knew was that she was called after her maternal grandmother, Christina Goodall. Her grandfather was David McKinnon. They had 10 children 5 boys and 5 girls. Christina was the oldest.

Christine said that she never heard her mother speak of her grand parents. She knew that her mother was born in Fraserburgh, Scotland on Aug. 29, 1883. Her father was born in Elgin. Christine said she only had one brother, Jim who was 17 months older than her. he died at 57 years old from ill treatment in Japanese hands.

She talks of her daughter Christine and grandson Graham and granddaughter Kirsty ( both young and in college at the time).

Another letter which is dated 5th of April, 1995, says:
" I never ever heard anything about his ( daddy's) grandparents which is a pity". "My Mum's grandparents are also unspoken of" .more......
"Mother was the oldest, and told me lots of stories about her mum and dad. Grandma made all the girls dresses and Granddad, a master tailor, made all the boy's suits. The only one left now is my Aunt Lilia in Australia. She is 12 days older than me." more.... " I have two sons as well as Christine. Douglas is 65 years old and Norman is 63. Owing to family disputes I never see them at all. They had 3 children each and I know I am a great Grandmother. Such a terrible waste. don't you agree?" She mentions the ages (in 1995) of her grandchildren. (from Christine) Graham is 22 and Kirsty is 18."
Medical:
130816: In letter from her daughter to Aunt Phyl on Feb. 7, 1993 she is said to suffer bad boughts of depression. 6677

Medical:
Note that the death register says there was no qualified medical examiner at the time of her death. Given the timing of her death, this suggests that she may really have died of the Spanish Flu which was raging around the world at that time and which exhibited with similar symptoms to pneumonia.

• Residence: Sep 1915, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Census: Howard Morry and family (2 pages), 1935, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Household Member)

• Census: Howard Morry and family (2 pages), 1935, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In this census he reports his occupation as Storekeeper - Grocery; there is no mention of his involvement in the fishery, as if that were a lower occupation. His declared his home had 12 rooms and was valued at $2000, much higher than his neighbours who were fishermen. But his income was $300, not much more than those involved in the fishery full time.

• Census: Household of Howard Morry, 1945, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Household Member)

• Medical Condition: Rheumatism in hands and feet, 1945, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

a stroke. We got an awful fright.
Got the priest & Doctor & for a while
we did not know what to think.
After an hour she came back to almost
normal. Phyl came up from town
at 10:30 p.m. & what a load it

.

• Medical Condition: Suffered a second, fatal attack (cerebral haemorrhage), 12 Feb 1948, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Dad Morry's entry in his diary for this year gives a detailed account of the attack and the subsequent three days before she finally died. But a later entry in 1953 on the 13th of February suggests that was the fifth anniversary of this attack and it may well have been because the entries just before and after the attack and the death of Fredris in 1948 are jumbled and confused as one might imagine.

• Alt. Death: Mom Morry died on 14 Feb 1948 according to Dad Morry's diary for the day, 14 Feb 1948, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. However, Dr. Lou Giovannetti signed the death certificate as being date of death 15 Feb 1948. So her date of death was officially registered as 15 Feb 1948.

I believe Dad Morry's diary entry was written days later and he confused the date and day of the week on which she died as he had her death as occurring on Sunday, February 14 and the 14th was actually a Saturday.

280216:

The Minty family were not Church of Scotland, though their marriage license suggests they were members of St. Michael's Church of Scotland. It just happens that this is the Parish in which the wedding took place and thus for registration purposes only, they were married in St. Michael's Parish, but not in the church. In fact the family was United Free Church of Scotland, a much less conservative body. The church they attended, now long since torn down, was on Dalry Rd. a mile or more from their house on Ardmillan Terrace. Because Dad Morry was AWOL on the day of the marriage and for the honeymoon, they could not risk going to the church to be wed. So they were married just three doors down the street at 1 Ardmillan Terrace, which was then the Labour Hall. This is confirmed from both their wedding invitation and the official marriage certificate.

Notes
General:
Mom Morry's gravestone in the Ferryland Catholic Cemetery reads: "Fredris Minty, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, wife of Howard Morry, died 15 February 1948; 52 yrs."

Death Certificate on record at PANL gives following details: Fredris Morry, Res. of Ferryland in the District of Ferryland; Aged 52; Married; Occupation Home; Birthplace Scotland; Religion RC; Date ofDeath Feb. 15, 1948; Place of Burial, Ferryland, Feb. 19, 1948; Attending physician: Dr. L. Giovannetti; cause of death - cerebral haemorrhage. Death certificate signed by W.J. Ryan and dated in Ferryland on 29 may 1948. Under remarks, an asterisk carrying down from one adjacent to her Christian name shows: "FREDRICE", presumably to aid pronunciation but it has been mistakenly carried over as the spelling of her name in the index of deaths in 1948.

220910: Living with family of James Minty during the 1901 Census

Her Birth Registration (copy downloaded from Scotland's People today) reads:

"714. Marion Frederick Powderall Minty; 1895 April 3rd, 5h 10m P.M., 26 Caledonia Place, Edinburgh; F; James Alexander Minty, Mercantile Clerk, Mary Minty, Miss Webster, 1878 November 14th, Edinburgh [marriage date and place]; James A. Minty, father; 1895 April 23rd, Edinburgh John Aitchison, Asst. Registrar, J.A."

There has always been great speculation as to Mom Morry's real birth name because it is so unusual. For the most part, we have always assumed that her full birth name was Fredris Marion Powderall Minty. This registry entry probably does not conclusively confirm that our assumption was incorrect; it would be useful to see the church record, however they are not publicly available online. The question it does raise, however, is "who was Frederick Powderall"? An employer of her father? A close family friend?

210512: Well it turns out he was the husband of her aunt, Marion Logie Minty. Mystery solved!

This is a transcript of Mom Morry's gravestone as found on FindAGrave:

Inscription: In loving memory of Fredris Minty (Native of Edinburgh, Scotland), beloved wife of Howard Morry, who departed this life Feb. 15th, 1948, aged 52 years Sleep on beloved sleep and take thy rest; lay down thy head upon thy saviour's breast; We loved thee well but Jesus loved thee best; Good night, good night, good night.

170715:
In a lengthy essay she wrote as a requirement of a history course at MUN in 1972, Sister Esther Moore wrote about the history of Ferryland and in it she mentioned that Mom Morry led a volunteer group of women in Ferryland during WWI who knited socks for the men overseas.

130717:
The Legion's book, "Lest We Forget, Vol. 16" had this to say about her: "MORRY (MINTY), Fredris Marion Powdrell Fredris was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 3rd, 1895. She married Howard L. Morry of the Royal Newfoundland
Regiment on June 2nd, 1915 in Scotland. Fredris and Howard made their home in Howard's hometown of Ferryland, Newfoundland. Together they raised 9 children in a home full of the love of family and music. Deceased: February, 1948. Buried: Ferryland RC Cemetery."
