• Alt. Birth: From Newspaper death announcement, Cir Oct 1810, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Gloria Bruce has now located a newspaper account of the death of a Mary Anne Fields which she believes to pertain to this person. The name fits according to our latest theory concernin her marriage to Philip Field but the stated age of the deceased does not match with the birth-baptism register. This newspaper (Evening Telegram) notice reads as follows:
"This morning, March 15th [1897], after a short illness, Mary Ann, relict of late Wm. Field, aged 86 years and 5 months; funeral on Wednesday at 2 p.m. from her late residence, Torbay Rd.; friends and acquaintances are requested to attend without further notice."
If indeed she was 86 years and 5 months old this would mean that she was born ca. October 1810 rather than October 1813 according to the birth-baptism register. Gloria argues that the 5 months is more important than the years because her husband was deceased and it ws likely that none of her children actually knew her age but did know in what month her birthday occurred.
Since we have no other record to go by, and since we have determined that she must be Mary Ann née Wheeler based upon the court case related to her son, Philip's wife, Margaraet Murrain/Murren, in which it is stated that his mother was named Mary Anne and was the sister of James Wheeler, on balance it seems logical to accept that this is her death notice despite the discrepancy in years, which is a very common error in newpaper obituaries from that era.

"Oct 31 1833; St. John's; George Ringsbury, bach., St. John's. Mary Anne Wheeler, spin, St. John's; J. A. Wheeler, William Earle."
This entry in the Cathedral Register has caused no end of confusion for the family. Note the two initials J.A. Wheeler. This would seem to imply Joseph Abner Wheeler.
We had initially been persuaded that Mary Anne's father and the father of many ancestors of the Wheelers in Newfoundland today, including Mom, was Joseph Abner Wheeler, a Corporal in the Nova Scotia Regiment, who seems to have married his wife Jane (?) after coming to Newfoundland as part of the garrison for the town during the War of 1812 when the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was sent to Upper Canada to fight the Americans. This was certainly the information originally provided to me by Doug Wheeler's family tree. And I was pleased to receive it because it gave a name to the immigrant ancestor of the Wheelers of Torbay Rd. Mary Anne's baptismal information in the Anglican Cathedral register substantiates this fact.
However, lately we have learned that Corporal Joseph Wheeler (no middle name given) of the Nova Scotia Regiment died on August 2 1813, a few months before the birth of his daughter Mary Anne. Therefore he could not have been the father of the several other children who were born later to a Joseph Wheeler (without the middle name Abner) whose wife was by weird coincidence (?) also named Jane (?). There was another Joseph Wheeler, originally of the Newfoundland Regiment (according to several obituaries published at the time of his death, but seemingly written by the one person), who now appears to have been the father of these other children, including Mom's great grandfather James.
But then we see this J. A. Wheeler showing up again as a witness to the marriage of Mary Ann to George Ringsbury 20 years after the death of Cpl. Joseph Wheeler, NS Regiment. So who was this J. A. Wheeler? An older brother whose birth record is not found in the Anglican Cathedral register? Or possibly this is the other Joseph Wheeler, who was apparently in the Newfoundland Regiment (though the regimental records carry no record of him) and who may have been a cousin of the Joseph Wheeler in the Nova Scotia Regiment perhaps? These are only theories and there is no evidence to support either. This J. A. Wheeler could also be Jane Wheeler, Mary Ann's mother.
The mystery remains.
140414:
Note that the marriage record given above is in fact a transcript of the Vital Records copy of the Anglican Cathedral register which was made at the request of the government in the early 1900s. The format they used caused much information to be omitted and also some errors were made by those making the transcription. It is therefore important to return to the original register to get the correct record.
The actual marriage record reads:Marriages 1833

210710: Actual registry entry reads: "115. Mary Anne, daughter of Joseph Wheeler, a Corpl. in Nova Scotia Regt. by Jane his wife. was born on 29th of Oct. 1813 and christened on the 15th Day of November 1813 Registered by me David Rowland."
061112: Mary Anne is the only child that I can connect with any confidence to Cpl. Joseph Wheeler of the Nova Scotia Regiment, referred to as Joseph Abner Wheeler in Doug Wheeler's family tree but nowhere else that I have found. All other children attributed to a Joseph Wheeler in the Anglican Cathedral register in the early 1800s appear now to be the children of Joseph Wheeler who lived to be 90, died in 1866, farmed on the Torbay Rd. and was noted in his newspaper obituaries to be formerly of the Newfoundland Regiment (not the Nova Scotia Regiment), though the RNR records contain no reference to such a man.
140414:
Note that the first record shown above is actually a transcript of the Vital Records taken from the cathedral register at the request of the government in the early 1900s and is abbreviated to conform to their requested format, thus losing important details compared to the original register itself.
130421:
It is noteworthy that there is no known death record for Mary Anne and it has always been assumed that she and the man she is purported to have married, George Kingsbury, had no children between the time of their marriage on Oct 31, 1833 and whenever she died. I have a rough date of Before June 1 1838. This was simply a guess based upon his having been imprisoned in England at that time and there is no record of her having travelled there with him.
Gloria Bruce and I now believe that he abandoned her (when exactly it cannot be determined). That subsequently she either got an annulment or else entered into a bigamous marriage with William Field in about 1840 and had a family with him. Pure speculation. But no other possible Mary Ann or Mary Anne Wheeler can be found to fit the bill.
190421:
Update on the above note. Gloria Bruce has now located a newspaper account of the death of a Mary Anne Fields which she believes to pertain to this person. The name fits according to our latest theory concernin her marriage to Philip Field but the stated age of the deceased does not match with the birth-baptism register. 14/12/02: On the Nfld. Gen Web transcription of the St. Thomas marriage record for Jane Wheeler, Joseph Wheeler is listed as the witness to the marriage. It is my feeling that they were brother and sister and I have therefore added information on the spouse of Jane Wheeler Field to the family tree file.
04/07/03: During a visit to the PANL today, a careful inspection of a photocopy of the birth records at St. Thomas's for 1840 did not make mention of this person. I will have to recheck the information on NGB website as it appears to be in error.
090703: Mary Jane Wheeler appears to be the "Jane Wheeler" who married Philip Field. This might explain some of the discrepancies in records since she evidently did not use her first name. It does not appear on either the marriage entry for the bride or in her signature on the form.
140705: It appears her first child was born out of wedlock a good 10 years before she married Phillip: "May 14, 1864, July 3, 1864, Mary Jane Wheeler (no husband named), Elizabeth, ___, Cox's Marsh, G. M. Johnson"
111109 from NGB: Mary Jane WHEELERJames Richard & Jane b May 4 1840 bap May 21 1840 Torbay Road fisherman
The above is the abbreviated Vital Records transcript, not the text of the actual register which normally contained more information.

140421:
Note that both I and Gloria Bruce have some hesitancy accepting that Mary Jane is the wife of Philip Fields because of the difference in her name. A search of Newfoundland records on FamilySearch showed that there were at least two other possible wives for Philip, one named Jane and the other named Lucy Jane. Their particulars are not a close match either, so I am staying with Mary Jane, my great-grandaunt for now.

Gloria Bruce was able to find the proof that we had previously erred in assigning this Mary Jane Wheeler as a spouse of Philip Field. She found the marriage record of Mary Jane Wheeler to Richard Cook(e) of Portugal Cove. I have therefore reassigned her today and kept only her first born child, Elizabeth, born out of wedlock, the other children of Philip Field being those of his true spouse yet to be ascertained but evidently named Jane (?).
