190112: Geoff Martin brought to my attention today that his full name on the baptismal register at St. Thomas's was Arthur John, not Arthur Benjamin. He's right. But his marriage record at St. Thomas's had him as Arthur Benjamin for some reason. I checked the family bible kept by Joseph Wheeler and he has him only listed as Arthur at the time of birth but Arthur J. at the time of his wedding. So on the strength of this firsthand information I am correcting his full name to Arthur John and making Arthur Benjamin an alias.

250712: Also just noted in the family bible that his birth date was given as March 1, 1878. The dates in the family bible are almost consistently different than in the "official" records at the churchs. One wonders if there was a reason that the family would deliberately give incorrect information at the church. In any event, for the most part, I am inclined to stick with the dates of record.

"I know my grandfather was an excellent tailor, he used to send winter coats to us in Toronto. He also dressed most of the most affluent men in St. John's. Unfortunately he was a little too fond of the drink and so the lived in almost abject poverty. Tuberculosis was rampant at the time and so several children died of it or complications from it. My father told me that he had spent some time in the "San" with a couple of his brothers and sisters. Hos sad and heartbreaking to loose so many children. My grandmother must have been a very strong woman although the only picture I have of her she looks so frail. Grandaddy was a small man with brilliant blue eyes. In his later years he stopped drinking but was still very poor. He never rode in a car and walked everywhere. He only rode in a motor vehicle 3 times that I know of two of them with my parents and once in an ambulance when he fell and broke his collar bone while ice skating a year or so before he died. My middle name is Catherine after my Grandmother and my son's middle name is Hammond,which was my father's middle name, Dad refused to let me put Cecil in his name although, my brother did sneak it in with one of his daughters."
Medical:
He was a notorious drinker based on family accounts but whether this in any contributed to his death is not known.

Nowhere have I been able to find any information on the birth and death of this child even though the Provincial Archives has recently released death certificates dating from 1950 to 1968.

It seems apparent that the "child" was not actually born or there would be a birth certificate. It was more than likely a miscarriage.
