The baptism record found by Gloria Dawe Bruce on Ancestry and sent to me yesterday reads:

"July 8 [1875] James Joseph (aged 14 years and convert) of Philip Wheeler and Hannah Murrin (Protestant). Answers himself. M. J. Clarke"

This creates a number of problems on all levels. First of all, why is there a 10 year gap (or more) between him and his next sibling? Secondly, why did he choose to be baptised (presumably re-baptised) in the RC Cathedral when all other members of the family were Protestant? Thirdly, why does his death record show he is once again a C of E (proven by the fact that he was accepted for burial at Forest Rd.)?

There can be little doubt that he is a different person than the Joseph Wheeler already found in the family, despite the similarity of names, because of the difference in ages. Also, Gloria found the death record for this person and the date of death corresponds well with his presumed date of birth calculated from his being 14 at the time of the baptism.

Many questions and few answers at this time. 7175

His war records, which are available online at The Rooms and which I have downloaded, show that he was wounded on October 12, 1916 but remained on duty. There was no indication at that time of the extent of the wounds. But on November 22, 1916 he was admitted to 34 Casualty Clearing Station and reported "Dangerously ill...Gunshot wound chest--GSW R. Arm. GSW R. Leg". It seems unlikely that these were the same injuries sustained on October 12 but there is no report of his having been wounded on this second occasion, when or how. It is interesting that he was appointed Lance Corporal between these two events on November 7, 1916. One wonders if that was an enticement to him to remain on duty despite his initial wound, whaterver it was, and that this may have slowed him down and cost him his life.

040909:

The information on the existence of James J. Wheeler was found today in a bible that had possibly belonged to Joseph Wheeler but certainly to John Thomas Carr Wheeler (Daddy Jack). It is now in the possession of his grandson, John Paul Wheeler. I had previously been unaware of his existence, had never heard of him from Mom and had never seen any information on him in Church records. I will now have to re-examine the church records for Torbay and St. John's to see if indeed he does appear in either location.

200710: Not found in STONEPICS

090613:

The reason that I did not find him in church records before is that he was Baptised in the Portugal Cove RC church, not in Torbay or at the Anglican Cathedral for some reason. I found this record on NGB today while looking for something else:

Portugal Cove Roman Catholic Baptisms

1872 - 1875

St. John's East District

1873 Oct 29 James Joseph, Joseph Wheeler and Mary Goss, Thomas Goss and Mrs. Thos. Goss, Thomas Oconnor.

I take it from the fact that several others in this register were from Torbay that there was a problem at the Torbay church at the time requiring them to use the Portugal Cove church instead. Quite a jaunt in those days.

Note that his second name is given as James Joseph. Also the date differs by a day but I am sure this is the same person and will therefore change the name preference today.

• Property: Sale of property on Torbay Rd. to Charles Langdon for £15, 27 May 1867, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Party)

• Interesting: J. P. Howley records discussing Shanawdithit with James Wheeler, Cir 1880, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. "An old man named James Wheeler, well known about St. John's a few years ago, told me that he distinctly remembered, when a mere lad, seeing these three women [Shanawdithit and her sister and mother] passing along the street as described by Rev. Wm Wilson. He said the people stopped everywhere to look at them, especially the young folk, himself amongst the number, and when the children would crowd around them, Shanawdithit would make a pretence of trying to catch some of them. They would immediately scatter in all directions, child like, then she would give vent to unbridled laughter. Their fear to be a matter which greatly pleased her, nor did she seem the least abashed at anything." Pg. 174, "The Beothuks or Red Indians" by James P. Howley, Prospero Canadian Collection reprint, 2000, ISBN 1-55267-139-9, from the 1915 Cambridge University Press edition.

This was an agricultural grant so not as expensive as it would have been had it been used for other purposes. The grant was signed by Sir Frederick B. T. Carter.

• Property: Grant to 14 acres and 2 roods of land on east side of Torbay Rd. near Island Pond, 13 Dec 1889, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Note it does not say in which regiment. Of course this is not proved but it seems they were certain of their facts at the time.

This James Wheeler acquired two grants of land:

- one in 1885 of 105 acres on the east side of Torbay Rd. beyond the grant given to his father in 1845. James Wheeler V 31 F 122 # 5142

- and another in 1889 of 14 acres and 2 roods also on the east side of Torbay Rd. further along toward Torbay and close to Island Pond. James Wheeler V 37 F 60 # 6064

On the first grant, one of the adjacent property owners is his brother Philip who is said to be occuping land granted to him but I have never located such a grant and it may have really just been land occupied by squatters' rights.

It should be noted that, even though these two grants were given exclusively for agricultural purposes, James was 69 a the time the first grant was issued and 73 by the time he received the second one. This tells me that he was not working these grants himself at the time, though possibly some of his sons were.

161022:

For some time I have been uncertain as to whether the grant holder named James Wheeler who received two agricultural grants on the Torbay Rd. in 1884 and 1889 was the father or son of that name. I am still not certain but have left the grants attached to the father.

But a court case in 1889 throws some doubt on this. The person bringint the suit is James Wheeler, the grant holder, and he contends that the original grant to all the surrounding lands was originally given as a military warrant to his grandfather for his service while in uniform. If this is correct, then the James in question could only be the son since his father was the son of Pte. Joseph A. Wheeler. This is a matter in need of further careful research but the outcome of that research may still be inconclusive.

14/12/02:

On the Nfld. Gen Web transcription of the St. Thomas marriage record for Joseph Wheeler and Mary Hannah Gosse, James and John Wheeler were listed as the witnesses to the marriage. It is my feeling that they were his brothers and I have therefore added information on the spouse and children of James Wheeler to the family tree file.

02/04/03:

The above deduction was apparently corroborated by Doug Wheeler's Family Tree Maker website data, though there are many differences in birth dates and children's names and name of spouse between his information and mine.

110315:

In the Devine and O'Mara book, Notable events in the history of Newfoundland -- six thousand dates of historical and social happenings, there is a James Wheeler on the Torbay Rd. whose date of death is given as 12 Apr 1896. I am only speculating that it is this man because my 2nd great grandfather by that name, whom I believe to be this man's father, is known to have died in 1898.

161022:

For some time I have been uncertain as to whether the grant holder named James Wheeler who received two agricultural grants on the Torbay Rd. in 1884 and 1889 was the father or son of that name. I am still not certain but have left the grants attached to the father.

It was only then that I realised Joseph and Mary Hannah covered both bases by having their children baptised in the Roman Catholic Church in Torbay AND the Anglican Church in St. John's. Note the significant discrepancy on date of birth and baptism. Needs to be verified with Vital Statistics. It would appear that the children were baptised at the Anglican church first and then subsequently re-baptised at the Catholic Church, probably under threat of excommunication for they and their mother.

040703: Checked the C of E record at PANL and verified it is accurately recorded on website. The record of baptism was marked as "private" (underlined). This obviously had to do with the fact that Mary Hannah and Joseph had signed a "sub conditione" contract with the Catholic church in Torbay to raise all their children Cathlolic as a condition of being permitted to marry. They were only honouring this partially as they baptised their children in both Churches.

130414:

Many events were recorded in the registers of both St. Thomas and the Cathedral in those days, making it difficult to know for certain where the event actually took place. The name of the officiating Minister usually is a clue.

Also note that the name of the witness, Joseph Abner Wheeler, which has been found in the actual register, is mistakenly transcribed as Joseph Whalen on the Vital Records copy made in the early 1900s:

Oct 25 1850 St Johns Robert HANNABURY (HENNEBURY) Bach St Johns Joseph Whalen Jane Lucy WHEELER Spinster St Johns George Hannabury
Children: 1. George Hennebury 2. William Francis Hennebury 3. Emma Lucy Jane Hennebury
