Mary Ellen (Yard) Irene Carew's daughter was going out with Michael Alyward in Cape Broyle when some nuns from the USA came to Cape Broyle and she, along with her two sisters, joined the convent. The night before she was to go to the US Michael begged her not to go. They told her she could be a nursing sister. After she joined and was officially a nun she was told she had to teach - which she hated. She stayed for a number of years when she got sick and they told her she had to leave. She got as far as New York and couldn't go any further. They sent her sister with her and she nursed her back to health in New York. Eventually she followed her dream and became a nurse. Michael, who was living in Montreal by this time and was engaged to someone else, heard she was out of the convent and went to New York and found her. To make a long story short they eventually got married and Mary Ellen (over time) became Director of Nursing at one of the larger hospitals in New York. Her dgt plays the organ at St. Patrick's Cathedral there. She has another dgt married to a policeman. Irene went to live with Mary Ellen.

And then in email dated 11/12/00:
"My note re Peter and Irene Yard was poorly formated. As far as I can remember Mr. Peter Yard was living in Calvert with his daughter Essie Ledwell on or about the time of his death in 1959. I don't know any information on his wife Irene. She may very well have died in th U.S.A."
Kevin didn't know of a daughter named Mary Ellen. I received that information from Enid O'Brien.

Hi Kevin/Chris:
Further to your email of Dec. 10th re Gertrude Irene Carew Yard, called "Irene" my notes show the following. They had six children
Mary Ellen, bap. FD RC Records on 15/8/1904 Stephen Bap (FD RC Rec) on 3/9/1905 Henry born 1907 - died 4/6/1940 (Ref. hdstone) Esther Bap (FD RC Rec) 10/10/1909-29/7/1964 (Ref hdstone. Kathleen, bap FD RC Recs 13/10/1910 Arthur (June 1915)
Three of these girls joined the convent, Kathleen stayed in, Mary Ellen became a nurse and eventually was Director of Nursing at one of the larger hospital in New York. She married Michael Alyward from Cape Broyle. Esther was sent out of the convent because she developed rheumatic fever. She married Wm Ledwell from Calvert and had the three dgts you mentioned: Rosalie, Ethel and Mary Ellen. Esther was cautioned not to have children and this took a great toll on her health. Therefore, Irene had a daughter, Mary Ellen, and a granddaughter Mary Ellen.
Stephen, as you mentioned, was killed in World War 11. He married Catherine Hayse from Brigus South. After Stephen's death "Kitty" married Alphonsus O'Brien.
Henry didn't marry.
Arthur married Bridget King and he is still living in the USA. He had planned to come back to Newfoundland last year for a visit but he had surgery which wasn't successful. He didn't feel well enough to travel.
The Yards were from Witless Bay. I have also seen this name written "Culyard" which I suspect is correct but has been shortened over the years.
Peter Yard went over to Ferryland in May 1959 because of ill health. As his daughter, Esther, was herself an invalid he was tended by his sister-in-law, Clara (Carew) Costello. He died the summer of 1959 in Ferryland but was buried in Cape Broyle. Irene and Peter were separated and she lived with her daughter, Mary Ellen, in Brooklyn where she died with Alzeiheimer's disease.
