Notes
General:
250417:

Annie was left orphaned by the death of her parents and brother in the Great Gale of Sept. 19, 1846, which killed hundreds of people off the east coast of Canada and the US.

According to her grandfather's notes in the family bible:

"Benjamin Sweetland the above 3rd son of Wm Sweetland married
Elizabeth Reeves of London by whom he had issue two children one
of whom his son Fredk was lost with him together with his Wife
at the Sugar Loaf near Saint Johns in the Hurricane which occurred and swept
a large portion of the Coast of this Island September 19th 1846 leaving
one Daughter Annie ^Maria Sweetland who is now in London at
the Master (Merchant) orphan asylum school & since at Dartmouth with
her Aunt in 1863"

280417:

According to Jessie Crisp's research, Annie Maria's aunt Annie Sweetland, a spinster, bought the living at Manaton for John Charles Burch Sanders, indicating that she was of some considerable means at the time. Her name appears on a plaque in the church naming the serving ministers and their sponsors.

261121:

Note that, despite the seemingly odd time lapse between the birth and baptism recorded here, the particulars including the name of the child and the mother and father seem to leave little doubt that it is the same child. The thought occurred to me of the possibility that there was an earlier child of this name who died and that the child batized at St. Saviour's was named for her. But the baptismal register clearly shows she was born in April 1841.
