150418:

In 2011 I asked Jean Carter Stirling who the Mrs. D. N. MacGillvary was who donated most of the Carter Papers to The Rooms.

This is how she responded:

"Darroch (Doch) MacGillivray, Cdr., RCN, retired, died of Alzeimers, 22 March 2003, age 68, in Halifax. His mother was Doris Alderdice, dau. of Frederick Alderdice, PM of Nfld, and his wife Harriet Carter. Doch was 11 years younger than me. His widow, Marion MacGillivray, still lives in Halifax, we are close friends in spite of how bored she used to get listening to Doch and me "family treeing" (I lived in Halifax for more than 20 years -- for several years, I worked at CBC TV and so did she, me in the control room, but Marion on camera.).

Here are some of my notes related to this subject taken from the page of Cyril Carter:

240514:

According to Jean Carter Stirling:

"Yes, Chris, I have my copy of the Smallwood research on the Carters. Terry Carter's father Cyril Carter had paid Joey to do it in 1937."

150418:
More on the above in an email to Duncan Williams, cc'd to me and Enid O'Brien, today:

"IN 1937 CYRIL CARTER (TERRY CARTER'S DAD WHO LOST A LEG IN WWI AND WHO LIVED ON KING'S BRIDGE ROAD) COMMISSIONED JOEY SMALLWOOD, WHO AT THE TIME WAS KNOWN AS 'THE BARREL MAN' ON RADIO VOCM, TO DO RESEARCH ON THE CARTER FAMILY. I HAVE A COPY OF THAT RESEARCH, AND IT IS WHERE I STARTED WITH MY OWN RESEARCH. I'M NOT SURE BUT I THINK HE EVEN WENT TO ENGLAND TO TRY TO FIND MORE. ANYWAY, THERE WAS PRECIOUS LITTLE IN THE WAY OF COLLECTED SOURCES FOR RESEARCHERS, AND AT LEAST HE DID THE BEST HE COULD. THAT SAID, THERE WAS A LOT OF CONNECTIONS MADE THAT HAD NOTHING TO BACK THEM UP, AND I REVISITED A LOT OF HIS CONCLUSIONS."

and the following day in response to my enquiry as to the whereabouts of the research notes:

"CHRIS, WHAT I HAVE IS ONLY A CARBON COPY OF THE ORIGINAL GIVEN TO CYRIL CARTER …. AND I MEAN THE OLD FASHIONED KIND OF CARBON COPY ON ONION SKIN PAPER! I ONCE LENT IT TO DOCH MACGILLIVRAY AND WHEN HE RETURNED IT HE HAD ADDED HIS OWN WAY OF ORGANIZING THE MATERIAL AND I NOW HAVE ONLY A COPY THAT IS MUTILATED. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORIGINAL. WHEN YOU ARE HERE IN THE SUMMER YOU CAN SCAN THE PAGES. YOU ARE RIGHT, HE HAS LITTLE HAPPENINGS IN THE CARTER FAMILY FOR WHICH HE GIVES NO SOURCE.
XXXXX JEAN"

It was Doch's wife, Marion, who donated the vast majority of the Carter papers to The Rooms, but oddly and sadly the Joey research notes were not amongst them. I will get a copy of Jean's copy next time I am in St. John's.

250307: Email from Fergus Kennedy:

"Finally, I'll go gack to my great-grandmother Kate. The only other important piece of information that I think I forgot to mention in my last e-mail is the listing of Mary Quinlisk in Townfields in the Griffith's valuation. A woman was usually only listed as head of householdif she was a widow. We know that Kate's mother was named Mary, but ofcourse we don't know her maiden name. We know that Mary's husband wasMichael, and that there were two Michael Quinlisks in Townfields in the 1820s. I think it is not unreasonable, though far from certain, to infer that this Mary might be Kate's widowed mother???"

040607: If Fergus's logic is sound, the Mary in question was mentioned in Griggith's Valuation as the lessee of property owned by Samuel Hodgins. The "house and garden" (0 acres, 0 roods 11 perches) was valued annually at 1 shilling for the land and 5 for the buildings.

Furthermore, there is a death certificate in existence for a Mary Quinlisk in Townlands. This could be her, or it could be the her widowed mother-in-law (assuming that she was also a Mary).

It reads: Date and Place of Death: Fifth March 1868, Bokaul (?) Workhome Name and Surname: Mary Quinlisk Sex: Female Condition: Widow Age last Birthday: 70 Rank, Profession and Occupation: Servant Certified Cause of Death, and Duration of Illness: Mania, from disease of the Brain, 2 years, certified Signature, Qualifications and Residence of Informant: J. Branagan, Master & Chief Resident Officer, Borrisokane Workhouse When Registered: Thirtieth March, 1868 Signature of Registrar: M. McGarvey, Registrar

From the dates I am peresently inclined to believe this woman was tooold to be Fergus's grandmother's mum and was more likely his great grandfather Michael's mum, ie. his G G Grandmother. But I'll leave thesenotes here until Fergus and I agree to which Mary this information pertains.
