Notes
General:
Enid O'Brien, Oct. 31, 1999 - "I believe this Priscilla died young."

April 1, 2002 -- NOTE:

There is also confusion in regard to the birth date that needs sorting out (1825 or 1832 - its a big difference!). There may in fact be two different Priscilla Ann (Anne) Morry's accidentally merged here.

Re-examining the original birth records from the Ferryland District, as transcribed on the NGB website shows clearly that Matthew and Anne had two daughters named Priscilla Ann(e). The first, born Oct. 4, 1825, died as an infant it would seem, though there is no record of her death on file. The second, born 7 years later on Dec. 5, 1832, would have been the one who married William Warner LeMessurier. I am re-arranging my records accordingly today.

180703: Though she may have been named Priscilla Ann, on George LeMessurier's family tree she is indicated as Ann and it states that she died young.

Individual Information
Birth Date: 17 Sep 1930 - Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada 109,7063
    Christening:
Death: 5 Dec 1932 - Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada ( at age 2) 109,2214,7063
Burial: Dec 1932 - Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada 19,282,7063
 Cause of Death: Pneumonia 7064

Events

• Alt. Burial: 4 Dec 1920, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The information given by Dad Morry is clearly incorrect as to the year of death. If it was 18 years prior that would mean she died the year she was born (1930). He also probably has the date of burial wrong because other sources suggest she died on the 5th of December and could therefore not have been buried on the 4th. But the other sources I have for date of birth are not primary sources so they took could be wrong.

• Documentation: Bill and Pat Morry Biography, 2019, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Notes
General:
Her headstone in the Ferryland Catholic Cemetery reads: "Pricilla Anne Morry, 1930 - 1932." Note the "e" on Anne which contradicts my records from Aunt Jean.

Her birth date (given on Aunt Jean's records) is September 17, 1930 and that of Aunt Catherine is given as September 1, 1930. These are clearly anomalous.

Aunt Catherine (email 02/09/00) isn't interested in providing exact information on her birth but suggests the error may be on her birth year, which could be in 1928: "I go by 1930 for working purposes as it is the only document I have. I could have been born in 1928 - but I do not know for sure." On the strength of this I am adjusting her birth year to 1928 as it makes more sense.

In email today from Aunt Elsie she wrote:

Hi Chris, in a roundabout way I received the two photos of Priscilla and I will treasure them as I really do not have any pictures of her and I remember so well when she died. I was just over 6 years old and I don't think I will ever forget the day of her death. Actually she died during the night. Momma was in hospital in St. John's and Daddy wasn't happy with the treatment that Dr. Freebairn was giving the baby so he sent a telegram to Momma and she left the hospital and came home. But it was too late Priscilla died early in the morning and I woke up to hear Mommy crying. Priscilla was so beautiful - her hair was a red-gold and she was so happy all the time. Aunt Catherine and I played with her like she was a doll. I couldn't understand why she had died - she was so full of life and laughter. It took us all by surprise and I am sure her death took a great toll on Momma. Momma said that the doctor treated her for scarlet fever when she actually had pneumonia. It was only later when I was older that I remembered that Dr. Freebairn was considered to be drunk a good part of the time. I think it broke my mother's heart and left a hole in the lives of the rest of us that was never filled. Thanks for taking the time to send the pictures. Love you, Aunt Elsie

Notes
General:
080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.

120918:
Note that I have not located a death or burial record for this person but I believe she died in early chidhood because nothing more is heard of her after her birth/baptism record and she certainly was not alive after her parents died as her sister, Miss Lizzie, lived on alone at Athlone after two of their brothers (Henry and William) left for British Columbia and the other, Matthew, died in childhood. My guess is she never made it through her first year. The fact that she was Christened in February after being born in September suggests that she may have been sickly and they wanted her baptised in case of her premature death.

Notes
General:
131015:

Depending on when she was actually born (we only know her date of Christening) she may have been the wife in this marriage at St. Saviour's:

30/11/1802: William FARRELL & Rebecca MORREY, both Sojnrs.
He signs. Wits; Francis Line & Thos. Maddick.

What suggests that this is not she, other than this seeming to be too early for her to marry, is that they are listed as Sojourners, that is temporarily in the parish but not from there.

Notes
General:
Gravestone in Anglican Cemetery reads:

"In Memory of our Beloved Child Reginald John, son of Thomas G. & Kate Morry died June 25th 1881 Aged 1 Month"

180806:

BDM reports record of death appeared on 05 July 1881 in:

1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807-

Deceased was the infant son of Thomas and Kate Morry. [Age not recorded.]

080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.

090119:
But for Reginald at least his christening does not appear in that Church register as he was likely baptised at home.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
110123:
In the evening Telegram obit and possibly in other papers the notice included a long poem as well as the details of death:

At Ferryland, on the 25st Inst., Reginald John, son of Thomas and Katie Morry.

Our darling lies in his cradle,
His body decked with flowers;
But his soul has gone with the angels
To dwell in heavenly bowers.

Where the flowers bloom forever,
For ever and evermore;
He has gone to his Father in Heaven,
His mortal pain is o'er.

This clay is not our dear one
Who, three short weeks ago,
Came on earth to dwell with us
And suffer mortal woe.

"Suffer little children to come unto me,"
Our Saviour said we know;
Then happy are those dear ones
Who are early called to go.

Then why should we mourn for our darling?
Who has gone to heavenly bliss,
Where all is eternal summer ---
Can earth compare with this?

• Property: Letter from Robert to Thomas Graham Morry re sale of Sweetland Property, 22 Sep 1871, Calvert, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In July 2015 whilst going through an eclectic group of files at The Rooms which are referred to as the 1000-2000 series, and which are put together in boxes in an effort to do a preliminary sorting of materials that have yet to be properly accessed into the permanent Manuscript series, I came upon another Morry document that really ought to be included in the above collection. It is filed as 1000-2000 Series files, Box 26 in the Series 2015, File 14. It was indexed as a letter pertaining to Sweetland property in Cape Broyle/Caplin Bay and indeed that is what it was but what the index did not say was that it was in fact a letter from my 2nd great granduncle Robert Morry to his brother, Thomas Graham Morry, concerning these lands, which at the time were in his possession, presumably as the agent for the Sweetland family, the Sweetlands long since having vacated the southern shore for central Newfoundland and the US. I have asked that this letter be relocated to MG 237.

• Interesting: Letter from unknown correspondent in St. John's re selling partridge, 8 Oct 1887, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This letter came at a time when Robert's fishing business was defunct and he was earning a living from a variety of small income sources. Apparently one of these was the selling of partridge in town via this unknown correspondent. The photocopy of the letter and a rough transcription were found amongst the papers of Anna Elton Morris at CNS/ASC at MUN but it is believed the original remained with Vic Le Messurier Badcock and may now be with her son Gordon.

• Occupation: Merchant, 2 Oct 1888, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Robert was probably no more a fisherman than I am but he was listed as such because of his longstanding involvement in the fish business as a cod liver oil manufacturer. That business had gone bankrupt long since in 1879 and he survived on small government appointments after that.

NB: It is possible but unlikely that another Robert Morry witnessed this marriage but I think not as I know of no other in this area at the time. Most likely this is a transcription error and the witness was a Robert Carter.

More likely the error results from there being two entries one in the St. Thomas register where the marriage was actually performed and one in the Cathedral register. St. Thomas served as a termporary stand in for the Cathedral whilst it was being restored following a fire and there were often double entries and also often errors were made. The version recorded by Nimshi Crewe from the Anglican Cathedral register on 14 Nov. 1966 (MG281) seems to be more plausible with no mention of Robert Morry as a witness.

In an email dated 3/11/ 99 from Enid O'Brien: "Robert and Victoria Morry lost most of their children in a diptheria epidemic, I believe Victoria had a nervous breakdown and her children were brought up by an uncle."

[NB: This information is corroborated by Kevin Reddigan - see below)

Listed in Hutchinson's Directory 1864 for Caplin Bay as a Cod Liver Oil Manufacturer.

Robert shows up for the first time in the Voters List for Caplin Bay 1840 - 1859 in the 1859 list and has "Riverhead" shown as his specificdomicile area.

Email from Kevin Reddigan 09/12/00:

"Most of Robert's family were wiped out in 1878/1879 at Caplin Bay by an epidemic, probably diptheria."

In consequence of this assertion by both Enid and Kevin I am adding all Morry children of unknown parentage from Caplin Bay who's deaths were recorded in December 1878 to February 1879 to the list of children from this family until proven to be otherwise.

Email from Anne LeMessurier Lilly 28/08/01:

"Email from Anne LeMessurier Lilly dated 28/08/01:

My Granny LeMessurier was born Helena Morry in Caplin Bay (now Calvert) in October, 1880. She grew up in Ferryland. Her mother was Victoria Matilda Winsor from Aquafort and her father was Robert Morry from Ferryland. Helena was their last child.

Dad told us this story. I feel that it should become part of the family annals because it shows how hard life was and how strong people were many years ago. My great-grandfather Robert was a sea captain and was gone for months at a time. A diphtheria epidemic broke out in Ferryland. Robert and Victoria's children were stricken with the disease. Once one child had the disease, the family was quarantined in their home, because it was so contagious. There was no medical help. My great-grandmother nursed her 7 children as best she could, but in the space of one week, 6 died. People in the community passed a coffin in through the window of her home. She would have to place her child in the coffin and push it out the window. This happened 6 times. Because of thequarantine, she was not even permitted to go to their funerals. I wonder how she maintained her sanity! My great-grandfather returned froma voyage to a wife and one child - when he had departed, he had 7 children! I've known this story for years but it still moves me profoundly that they survived such a terrible tragedy. Would we be able to do so today?! What a strong woman my great-grandmother must have been. Dad remembers her as an old lady wearing a lace cap on top of her head and sitting ramrod straight in her chair, even into her nineties. Onlytheir eldest daughter, Bertha survived the illness. Helena, my grandmother, was born afterwards."

220108: Robert died intestate. His son-in-law George W LeMessurier applied for executor status on behalf his survivors, wife Victoria and daughters Bertha and Helena. I have copies of the probate papers. The estate was valued at $1000. Guarantors were John LeMessurier, draper of St. John's and Frank Lilly, solicitor of St. John's.

From Enid O'Brien: "obit in the Evening Telegram, May 9, 1898 is as follows: On Saturday am, Robert, youngest son of the late Matthew Morry, Sr, Esq, (merchant) at Caplin Bay, age 67 years."

160112:

There is confusion over the year of the marriage. It states 1858 in the St. Thomas Register and 1857 in the Cathedral register. One more point of confusion caused by the temporary relocation of the Cathedral to St. Thomas's afte the fire at the Cathedral.

160112:

Performed at St. Thomas's but recorded in register at Cathedral as well.

NB: It should be noted that the Vital Records transcript of the Anglican Cathedral, St. John's, Newfoundland register of marriages for the first part of 1858 mistakenly shows the dates as 1857. This occurs on one page only (page 78 in Marriage 1835-1891, Vol. 26 as found on the FamilySearch.com website) for the marriages from January to July before resuming with the correct dates in the rest of 1858.

150113: 19-Jun 1858 St. Johns Robert MORRY, bach, merchant, Caplin Bay Maria Victoria Matilda WINSOR, spin, Ferryland Robert Morry, M.N. LeMessurier STJB Maria V.M. Winsor was bapt Oct 23 1834, the dau of Henry WINSOR of Aquaforte & Ann COULMAN of Ferryland.

020713: The family bible I refer to as the Ann Coulman Winsor bible because it is her name that appears first in it (probably belonged first to Helena Morry Le Messurier) and that is now in the possession of Gordon Badcock contains many errors in the dates and places of events recorded and is unreliable. It shows the marriage was sanctified at the Cathedral, but that is most likely a latter day entry that used as its source the Cathedral register, which included all marriages in the parish, including those celebrated at St. Thomas, where the marriage actually took place. Because the Cathedral was out of commission at this time due to a fire, the nominal seat of the "Cathedral" was St. Thomas.

161015:
See the Media Gallery articles from the Evening Telegram. It would appear that Robert Morry was so distressed at the loss of almost his entire family in the winter of 1878/1879 that he eventually wound up becoming a bankrupt and losing much of his property. That said, he remained on in the village and was treated as a person of some responsibility being asked to chair meetings over matters of local concern 1n 1891 and being appointed Returning Officer in 1896.

311215:
According to a letter that Dad Morry wrote to Nimshi Crewe in 1959, Robert Morry's house in Caplin Bay was beside the Sweetland property. The Sweetland house was taken down in large measure in the 1900s and only a portion of it remains (it is owned by the Harold Power though Kevin Reddigan isn't sure how they came by it originally). It doesn't seem that any part of Robert Morry's house survives but at least we now know more or less where it was located. I have placed an image of the location of the Sweetland and Morry houses from Google Earth in the Media Gallery.

160916:
Further to the above concerning the location of Robert Morry's property, according to a letter written to Thomas Graham Morry by his brother Robert on Sept. 22, 1871, Thomas was acting as the agent for the sale of the Sweetland properties in Caplin Bay. I'm not sure if this was a financial arrangement on his part or if he was doing it as a favour to the family of his uncle by marriage, William Sweetland, who had died in 1864. A copy of the letter is found in the Media Gallery. Whether this was the property that Dad Morry knew of as Robert Morry's property or whether he already had existing land adjacent to the Sweetland property and was hoping to add to it I do not know.

Here is a transcript of the letter:
Letter from Robert to Thomas Graham Morry Sept. 22 1871 re Sale of Sweetland Property
(The Rooms - MG 955 Box 18 File 26)

Caplin Bay Septr 22/71
Dear Thos.
Revd. Jno Conway has
been to me about Sweetland' s
House, wishing to purchase
it, and part of the Ground
to build a Chapel upon and
I have agreed to join him and
purchase the remaining por-
-tion of the ground, that is we
will buy the lot between us -
and he has requested me to
write you and know the lowest
figure you will let it go for.
Andrew Keough has also been
to me about purchasing the
House and has told me
that if Pastor Conway fails'
(which I think is not likely)
he will buy what Father Conway
is in trusty [?] for. - Don' t make
any bargain or offer respecting
the sale of the House & Ground

without first acquainting me
as the Keoughs and others who
may be interested to purchase
might think by applying
to you they would squeeze
out a better bargain. - I would
wish that whoever may be
the purchaser the sale may
be conditional through me
as your agent. - Write as
soon as convenient.-
We are all well here and
with love to Eliza & Annie.
I remain
your affectionate Brother
Robert Morry

030618:

Kevin Reddigan came upon an 1879 case record from the Supreme Court in which Ann (Munn) Hart was seeking an order of eviction to remove two Caplin Bay men, Robert Boland and James Power, from property that she had inherited that had formerly been a part of the Francis Tree Plantation in Caplin Bay. She was the granddaughter of Francis Tree Jr. and the grand niece of Philip Tree and was to inherit property in both Caplin Bay and Ferryland as a result of the will of the latter. In the court case (which was successful, though what she did with the Caplin Bay property is unclear since it remains in possession of the same squatter families to this day) the description mentions that this property was bounded on the north by the property of Robert Morry. In the media gallery I have enclosed a map of land ownership at the time the railway went through Caplin Bay on which Kevin has outlined the location of the Sweetland/Francis Tree property in dispute and I have added to the probable location of Robert Morry's property based on Kevin's deductions.
