The above transcript of the marriage record also errs in that it assumed incorrecly that the "Pro-Cathedral" where the marriage took place was the Protestant Cathedral. It was in fact St. Thomas's which was then acting as the "Pro-Cathedral" after the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was badly damaged in the Great Fire the year previous.

The reception took place at the Post Office because Henry Le Messurier was then the Post Master for Newfoundland.

The lengthy article describing the nuptials which was published in the Tribune (included in the Media folder) is remarkable. My speculation on the cause of it differs from that of Enid. I enclose both below.

Hi Rick and Enid:

I suspect Enid has already seen this so this is primarily intended for Rick's "amusement"?

A fellow by the name of Blaine Dooley posts on Facebook every day several segments he finds in old newspapers that will be of interest to others. Today he posted two entries from the St. John's Tribune (a long since defunct newspaper) which announce the marriage of Fenwick Crane. The articles are date on 22 August 1893, actually the day after their marriage. One is just a brief two line mention of the marriage of Fenwick Crane and "Minnie" [sic] Morry. This would have appeared in the classified ads where births, marriages and deaths are announced. The other is a lengthy article evidently written by a misogynistic friend of Fenwick's who quite clearly was not impressed that his friend had taken the plunge. He refers to him as having "joined the great army of benedicts", presumably suggesting he was a traitor to the cause like Benedict Arnold is viewed in the US (though indeed he was a true Loyalist as Canadians are concerned!). But to add insult to injury, in this entire lengthy article the writer refuses to descend to even naming the bride! He does mention the names of the bridesmaids and even manages to mangle the spelling of Lena (Helena) Morry's surname as Morrey!

I suspect the brief classified was also written by the same disgruntled friend because a woman would normally be given the dignity of being named in her marriage announcement by her proper Christian name, not her nickname.

I have never seen anything of the like published before. It is indeed remarkable. My suspicion is that the writer was a gay man who had designs on Fenwick himself.

And Enid's response:

Good Morning Chris/Rick

I was busy yesterday and didn't notice Blaine's clippings. Chris, like you, I really don't know what to make of it. It was obviously aimed at Minnie. I was thinking it might have been written by a woman, maybe a girlfriend who was jilted by Frenwick. Who ever wrote it was very angry and implied she didn't even look good, ie, THE GENTLEMEN AT LEAST ASSERTED THAT SHE LOOKED CHARMING meaning that the women didn't? The bride wore BRIGHT WHITE OR VERY PALE CREAM - a lot of difference.

You would have to know the circumstances, maybe it was a joke-stir friend.

Either way it was in poor taste and I can't picture anyone writing that in a newspaper on one of the happiest day's of a couple's life

I guess we will never know the story behind it.

From Enid O'Brien 220114:

Fenwick (B 1862 Died 6/12/1943)

Fenwick Crane's family is not from the southern shore. They are from Upper Island Cove. They were an Anglican merchant family. He is the son of James Crane/Susannah Drover. He also has a brother George Crane who was an Anglican minister. The Upper Island Cove Cranes have been in Newfoundland a very long time.

Fenwick was an accountant with the Job Brothers Company, one of the larger merchantile companies in Newfoundland. According to his obit he was a good athlete, one of the best curlers and rowers, etc.

030714 from 1921 Census on NGB website:

I suspect Theresa Drover was a niece of Fenwick as her surname appears to be the same as that if his mother and she is from the same village as he.

241010 email from Rick Morry:

"My Mother's records indicate that my grandfather's sister Mary married the elder Fenwick Crane in Newfoundland. His son Reginald moved to Florida. His son Fenwick Crane the younger moved to Seattle in the 1970's first living on Mercer Island and then in Seattle. In Seattle he lived in the same subdivision as my Mother, in fact three blocks North on the same street Parkside Drive East. My Mother knew him well. I am not sure if I ever formally met him but do recall having seeing him from time to time. My Mother's subdivsion directory indicates that he still lived at 1571 Parkside Drive East, Seattle, Washington 98112 at the time of her death but that is several years ago. This directory gives his telephone as (206) 324-9887 and email as fscrane@pga.com <mailto:fscrane@pga.com>. The current Seattle telephone directory still lists him at that address and with the same telephone. The email may have changed given the many mergers in the communications companies in recent times. I have no way of knowing for sure. The Directory lists his wife's name as Vivian but there is no indication of whether they have children. He must be quite elderly by now if he indeed still lives. You might try to contact him directly. There may also be addditional information in my Father's cousin Jim Dunford's records which are in my work file at my office downtown. I will check them tomorrow and send any added information to you later."

Rick Morry wrote to say he had met with Susan today and she was interested in sharing information on the family. Her father is still alive and spends his time in Seattle and Palm Springs.

190421:

Since the above note, Fenwick Crane passed away and today Rick sent his obituary. However, I realised afterwards he had sent it already at the time of the death.:

Fenwick "Fen" J. Crane

In 1969, Fenwick J. Crane and his wife, Vivian, moved to Seattle from San Francisco for a business opportunity. Soon after, a billboard went up that read: "Will the last person leaving Seattle - turn out the lights". Fen did the exact opposite - he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and started to turn on those lights.

Standing 6 feet 4 inches, Fen was a charismatic and lovable husband, father, grandfather and friend. Some might better recognize him by one of the nicknames he earned and welcomed throughout the years: Sugar, Ears, Senator, Fleetwood, or Longball. Known for his good humour and fun loving ways, Fen was the type of guy you always wanted to be around.

In Seattle, Fen served as president and CEO of Family Life Insurance, which was eventually merged with Merrill Lynch. After the acquisition, he became chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch Life Insurance and joined the Merrill Lynch Board of Directors, where he served for 12 years. He was also involved in many clubs and civic boards, including his time as president of the Washington Athletic Club and president of the Seattle Rotary Club #4, where some members still remember the "5 to 9" hunting story.

Fen's passion for college football led him to become president of the Tyee Club at University of Washington. There, he chaired the first committee to allocate seats based on contributions to help fund the athletic department.

Fen also loved golf. He was a member of the Seattle Golf Club and served as president of Broadmoor Golf Club and El Dorado Country Club in Indian Wells. He was given the opportunity to serve on the PGA of America board for 13 years and attended and worked at five Ryder Cups.

Despite all of his involvement in the Seattle area, Fen was actually from the Midwest. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 9th, 1923 to parents Reginald and Ellie Crane, but was raised in Michigan, where his love for hunting and fly fishing began. Fen served 3 years in the Marine Corp and was discharged in 1946 as a 2nd Lieutenant.

Afterwards, Fen finished his college education at University of Michigan, where he played football and met his wife, Vivian. They married in 1947 on opening day of hunting season - as you can guess, many of their anniversaries were duck hunting related. Despite celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary last year, Fen always joked: "I thought it was just going to be for the weekend!"

During their 70 years of marriage, Fen and Vivian lived all over the country, traveled the world, and had two daughters, Patricia and Susan Crane, and two grandchildren, Scott and Lisa McLean, all of whom live in Washington State.

Once retired, Fen and his wife spent half their time in Indian Wells where he remained active in the Senior Golf Association and served on the Eisenhower Hospital Board. He also enjoyed fly fishing on the Bitterroot River in Montana, relaxing at their cottage on Whidbey Island, and spending quality time with his family in Seattle.

On February 10, 2018, Fen passed away at his Seattle home in the loving comfort of his wife. He was 94 years old.

Fen was a dear friend to many and will be missed dearly.

Even though Hilda Marjorie (given as H. Marjorie "newspaper obit" when she died so I think it would be fair to say she was called Marjorie) is identified as Maryanne on the picture [sent by Rick Morry from his aunt Rose's album], I am wondering if Marjorie was a more modern name for Mary at the time. Marjorie was 24 years old when she died on 18/9/1920 Ref, vital Stats) so that would mean she was born in 1896. The Telegram states she was the eldest daughter of Fenwick/Mary Crane.
