• Residence: 1557 16th Avenue North (now 1557 East Garfield Street), After 1939, Seattle, King, Washington, United States of America. From Rick Morry, 310720

Dear Chris and Enid,

In 1920 after only four years on 19th Avenue, the Morry Family moved a few blocks away to 1557 16th Avenue North (now 1557 East Garfield Street). The home was roomy but perhaps the main impetus for the move was that it was in a better area just a block away from Volunteer Park, Capitol Hill's fabled parkland.

The Morrys lived in this house longer than in any other home. George William Morry died there in 1926. The five Morry children all finished their schooling there and moved on to the working world.

Unlike with past homes, neither the Dunfords nor the Grants came to join the Morrys there for an extended stay. However, in 1939 when Jack Dunford fell ill with stomach cancer, he and Margaret moved in with Mary Morry and Rose and Ellen plus George Joseph. By then Lucile was away teaching and Josephine was in the convent in Oregon. The Dunfords had been living at their Mercer Island property and probably moved in with the Morrys in the city to be nearer to medical treatment for Jack. Jack died in this home in 1940.

After Jack Dunford died, Margaret sold her Mercer Island and Capitol Hill properties. Mary Morry sold the 16th Avenue home. They then moved together into a home on 15th Avenue (now East) directly across the street from Volunteer Park which was purchased by Margaret. (I presume Mary did not share in ownership because she needed the funds from her house sale for basic living expenses because George William Morry had died so long before.) This 15th Avenue home was demolished for a condominium but I sent you previously historical photos on June 2, 2020.

Rose and Ellen lived with Margaret and Mary and basically cared for them for the rest of their lives. They lived in the 15th Avenue home until Mary Morry died in 1958. Margaret then sold the house. Thereafter Rose and Ellen lived in Capitol Hill apartments. Margaret lived with them in the first of these units until she died in 1960.

My father George Joseph Morry (other than for a temporary work absence in Dallas, Texas) lived with his mother, aunt and sisters first in the 16th Avenue house and then in the 15th Avenue house until he married my mother in 1942.

When I tried to send this message with photos attached there was a problem so I am sending the text now only. The photos will hopefully follow in a separate email.

All the Best,

Rick

Notes
General:

According to the 1920 Census both of his parents were born in Canada.

From Rick Morry:

Dear Chris,
While my mind is still on the subject and to give you an idea of the interconnections between the Morry and Dunford families, I will share a little of their Seattle history.

When the family first arrived in Seattle, they had rooms in downtown. When they prospered more they moved to single family homes on Queen Anne Hill which is just above the Space Needle. The ultimate in those days was to move to Capitol Hill, which was the center of Irish Catholic life. The hill is in the center of the city northeast of downtown. It was once called the Irish ghetto. Because of its central location and large now remodeled homes, it has become a luxury area with starter homes at $1 million. It is still the ideal for Irish Catholics with money. On the hill are St. Joseph's Church still Irish as sin (pun intended) and the principal Catholic schools St. Joseph's primary, Seattle Prep (the all boys Jesuit high school), and Holy Names Academy (the all girls high school where in fact my Holy Names Sister Aunt Josephine Morry became principal). Prep is now co-ed but Holy Names remains girls only.

From that time on the Morrys and Dunfords lived on Capitol Hill in close proximity (albeit at the end the Dunfords retired to their summer home on Mercer Island in Lake Washington).

There is a side story involving my parents. My Mother Kay Jahn Morry's German family came to America early in the 19th century and prospered. She lived for years on E. Ward Street just off 15th Avenue E. She went East to Wellesley College for school and graduated in 1940. My father graduated from the University of Washington in 1937 and then got into the insurance business being away in Texas for awhile. But in 1940 he moved into the Dunford-Morry home on 15th Avenue E. with my Great Aunt Margaret Dunford, my grandmother, Rose and Ellen; Lucile was off on her own by then and Josephine was in the convent. My Mother's home on 15th Avenue E. is on the other side of the street and down two blocks from where my Father lived in 1940. In those days, 15th was the dividing line between the Irish ghetto and the wealthy English-German section on the West side of the street where the homes included mansions. My Mother's home was not a mansion but it was a big and beautiful one. My Father's home was middle-class okay. Sometime between 1940 when my Mother returned from college and my Father got back from Texas and 1942 when they married they linked up. My understanding is that they did not really know each other before then and were three years apart in age. My Mother also attended Forest Ridge Convent a stuffier Catholic elementary school for girls and then St. Nicholas School a private prestigious Episcopal high school so they had no school connection. My Mother's engagement to someone from the other side of the street did not go well with my grandmother Jahn who was dismayed that her well-educated daughter was marrying poor Irish trash. As for me in my youth my grandmother's both living on 15th Avenue E. easily accessible by the No. 10 bus made life very happy. It enabled me to double my cookie consumption and get extra spoiled as my wife reminds me from time to time.

I attach a map of the area with the places marked save Seattle Prep which is just to the North of and down from the E. Garfield residence where my father lived from 1920 to 1940. I hope you can decipher it.

All the Best,

Rick
