Marriage Events

• Witnesses: Francis Lione & Thomas Maddick, 30 Nov 1802, Dartmouth, Devon, England. Marriage Notes

070412 from DRO transcript of St. DSaviour marriages: 20/11/1802: William Farrell & Rebecca Morrey, both Sojnrs. He signs. Wits.; Francis Line & Thomas Maddick

It is not at all certain that this is a second marriage for Rebecca Wills, who was married to Robert Stone Morry, but it is entirely possible. Normally when a woman remarried there would be an indication in the register that she was a widow and there is none here but that may have been an oversight in the original register or the transcription at the DOR. Rebecca Morrey is an uncommon name even in that land of Moreys by various spellings of the name. The fact that they were both sojourners (not from the parish) suggests he may have been a mariner and they were married when they reeached the port where she once lived.

Geoffrey Williams' database has this Rebecca Morry/Morrey as the daughter of Rebecca Wills and Robert Stone Morry but that makes no sense as she would barely be 12 at the time of her marriage according to her estimated birth date. We have a solid record of her Christening and assume she was born the same year. Only if that assumption is wrong and she was born long before her Christening would it be possible for that Rebecca Morry to have married William Farrell. On balance I think it more likely that the Rebecca Morrey who married William Farrell was Rebecca Wills who first married Robert Stone Morry.
