I was born on September 25, 1920, to Stanley and Mary Dixon Windsor.I was educated at Bishop Spencer College on Bond Street in St. John's. Before the war, I worked as a stenographer at Government House and later at Fort Pepperrell.

I was one of the first from Newfoundland to enlist in the women's division of the air force, and I did so because I felt that I should. I did my basic training in Toronto and I was then sent to Calgary for recruiting and was promoted to corporal. While there, my brother Bill, who was coming home on his first leave from the Royal Navy, was lost when the Caribou was sunk by a German U-boat on October 14, 1942. While in Calgary, I applied for overseas. They did post me overseas, which was Torbay, Newfoundland. At the time, Newfoundland was a country and a colony of Britain. While at Torbay, I worked at administration in the orderly room, which was at the main office. In April 1943 I was married to Tom Goodyear, who was in the Merchant Navy.

Jessie Windsor Goodyear lives in St. John's with her husband Tom Goodyear, whose story appears on page 136.

170718:
In his book To Serve and Protect Gary Browne informs us that Jessie was more than just an administrative officer in the orderly room; she was part of military intelligence. Perhaps she felt even years later that she was not allowed to reveal that secret. Here is what Gary tells us about her serive: "Servicewomen who worked for Governor Walwyn as wartime decoders and deciphers, such as Jessie (Windsor) Goodyear, a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, were very happy to have two members of the Constabulary stationed on Government House grounds, especially during the "Blackout Years".

230821:
Shannon Wheeler wrote me to ask a question about the sisters of Sarah Windsor Bradshaw whom she believed resided in the Victoria area - Jessie Hay and Clara McCoubrey. I told her the latter was certainly a resident for the latter part of her life as that is where she married my great grandfather and where they died. But I was of the impression that Jessie only visited in 1907 when Clara and her son Alexander moved there and that Jessie then returned to Newfoundland.

However, Shannon pointed out to me that Jessie was a frequent visitor mentioned in the diaries of Ethel Bradshaw:

1913, Sep 17 Our first Anniversary. Had all the family, excepting Will to dinner, Aunt Jessie also Auntie & Alec could not come. Spent pleasant time. Mr. Sparkes brought me lovely bouquet of roses & carnations.

1914, M ay 26 Celebrated twenty-fifth birthday. Claude gave me nice gold brooch set with pearls and garnet. Mother tea tray, Aunt Jessie worked cloth and the girls work basket

1915, Mar 15 Mother & Aunt Jessie came to spend couple of days - stayed two nights.
1916, May 3 The kiddies & self spent today at Mother's. Aunts Clara & Jessie were there.

This now makes me wonder if her date and place of death, of which I have not documented the source, is perhaps wrong. Needs further evidence.

From Dave Wells 200810:

WINDSOR, John Allan - August, 1944 - January, 2010. There are things we don't want to happen but have to accept, things we do not want to know but have to learn and people we can't live without but have to let go.... It is with great sadness that the family of John Windsor announces his passing. John passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC while visiting with his children and grandchildren. John was a well respected man in his home town of Clarenville and served many hours volunteering for his community. John will be remembered for the many contributions he made to the Clarenville Area Recreation Association and Flying Blades Figure Skating Club. He had a passion for sports throughout his whole life, as a child he loved team sports - especially hockey, as an adult he played soft ball and curling and in his most recent years he found a passion on the "green" spending many hours with his buddies playing golf. Nothing put a twinkle in his eye more than watching his children and later grandchildren play out his love of sport in Hockey and Figure Skating. John also served 40 years with Works, Services and Transportation as a Superintendent of Highways. John was deeply loved by his family. The values he taught his children will be cherished and passed on for many generations to come. His family will take comfort that he provided them an internal compass to guide them throughout their lives and as a result he will live on in his family. Left to remember his devotion to family is his wife Georgie (nee West) of 38 years, his children Kim Miller (Corey), Kristina Walsh (Terry), sister Phyllis Windsor (Roger Colmay) and six cherished grandchildren- Molly, Alex, Kasey, Joel, Rylan and Reese. John also leaves a multitude of extended family in Newfoundland and Labrador and many friends who held great importance to him. John's profound love of Newfoundland will be respected in that his family will be bringing him home. A Memorial service to honour his life will take place on March 19 @ 10:30 am at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Clarenville. Visitation will take place at Fewer's Funeral Home on March 17th 6:00-9:00 pm, March 18th 1-4 pm and 6-8 pm. In Lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honour of John may do so to the Flying Blades Figure Skating Club, or St. Mary's Anglican Church, Clarenville. Condolences for the Family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com.

Discrepancy in date of marriage (1880 or 1890?). NLGS records C of E information on marriages and it shows 1880. Witnesses were John Morry, Florence Morry, Henry C. Winsor, William Morry, Thomas G. Morry, Alice W. Morry, Annie J. Winsor, Peter Winsor and the Minister was William Bowman.

Terra Nova Advocate: Married: May 12, 1880, at St. Lukes Church, Ferryland, John T. Winsor, Esq. of Aquaforte, to Clara Isabella, eldest daughter of John Morry Esq, of Ferryland. By Rev. Edward Botwood.

Note that Clara was only eldest daughter by virtue of the early and untimely deaths of her siblings, Agnes and Alice. Note also error in initial of groom.

200806:

BDM on CD-ROM repeats some of the errors above. It reports that marriage notice appeared on 18 May 1880 in: 1) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 2) Morning Chronicle 1865-1881

Bride was the eldest daughter of John Morey (sic) from Ferryland. I'm pretty sure that John Henry Morry did not spell his surname the old way (Morey) so there was an error either in the paper or the transcription. This transcript also spells out the groom's name as John T. Winsor, getting both the initial and surname incorrectly.

031012 Geoff Martin located the May 25 1880 copy of The Newfoundlander online courtesy of Google which includes this announcement:

"On the 12th inst., by the Rev. Edward Botwood, Dean of Avalon, at St. Luke's Church, Ferryland, John J. Winser, Esq, of Aquaforte, to Clara Isabella, eldest daughter of John Morry, Esq, of Ferryland."

This version gets the spelling of Morry correctly but gives another erroneous spelling for the groom's surname -- Winser. At least if got his middle initial correctly.

120713:

There seems to be little known about St. Luke's Anglican Church, when it was constructed and when it was demolshed for lack of use. The problem is that there are almost no living Anglicans in Ferryland anymore and hence no one with a connection to this church. I had made notations in the family tree file on many instances to a baptism, marriage or burial taking place at St.Luke's, but I now realise that in many of those instances I may have been making an assumption that was not justified. There seems to have been an earlier church that existed before St. Luke's, which was near where the Forge Hill or Fox Hill Cemetery is located. The previous church was believed to have been located near the Pool, which makes sense, but no one knows if it too was called St. Luke's and how long it lasted. Here are some notes on the subject from an email sent on July 11, 2013 by Jean Carter Stirling and contributed to by Ida White Michael:

Hi, Chris & Enid == Ida and I are here together staring at the screen and trying to decide what info we have that you may not, in the context of St. Luke's C of E Church in Ferryland -- which is not much!!!

Ida remembers as a child hearing that the first C of E church was in the Pool. Neither of us remembers knowing the name of it. This church was there for sure during the years the Robert Carter Journals ( 1832-52) were kept, and there were sometimes resident ministers, and sometimes just visiting ones ..... the ones who were resident also had other nearby places that they were responsible for, like Aquaforte, Renews, etc. . One, Rev. Hamilton, was there as a bachelor to begin with, taking the place of Rev. Hoyles who married and moved to St. John's. Rev. Hamilton after several years married in Halifax, and brought his bride back to Ferryland, where they had several children, some of whom died, and his wife died in childbirth and is buried C of E cemetery on Fox Hill, near the R.C. priest's house, North side of Ferryland. This first C of E church is very central to the life described in the RC Journals; it was heated only with a pot bellied stove, and Robert Carter, on Christmas could not attend church because his arthritis was so bad and the place so cold. We don't know how long it lasted, or when it was replaced by St. Luke's, which surely must have been built after the first church was no longer usable.???

Ida also remembers that the remnants of St. Luke's was between the priest's house and Friebairn's property. Ursula Kieley remembers as a child the remnants of it as Ida described.

Ida's great aunt Ida Clapp Mainwaring's wedding picture Ida remembers, was in the old Sea View house, which was the old Carter house where Ida was born, torn down in 1965. (we have a photo of a painting of that old house).

Great Aunt Blanche Tessier was married at St. Luke's and Ida had a copy of the original wedding invitation, addressed to her grandparents, Clara and Will Costello. The latter were married in 1913 and so St. Luke's was still there then. Blanche was married in St. Luke's and had the reception at Sea View, same as her sister, Ida. We don't know who the officiating minister was, and that original wedding invite was given to Carl Tessier, who has since died in Gander, his home.

300816:
Now this is an interesting fact I did not know before: Mont Windsor was the best friend of the politician, Peter Cashin, as well as Dad Morry's best friend, but Dad Morry had not one good word to say about Peter Cashin (though he though Peter's father, Sir Michael Cashin, was a decent man, for a politician). In his book of memoirs, edited by Ed Roberts, called My Fight For Newfoundland, Peter Cashin has this to say about his first campaign for the House of Assembly and his meeting at that time in Aquaforte:
"The population of Aquaforte was, and still is, small, and, although scattered, we were able to visit every home in a day. It was and still is the home of one of my best friends, Mont Winsor [sic], who still lives there and raised a fine family. He was married to a Scottish lady from Ayr, whom I knew when both Mont and myself were overseas [with the RNR] in the First World War. I have been meeting members of his family quite frequently who are now grown up and have families of their own. Mont is almost two years yonger than me. Mont's father, Mr. Henry Winsor, [sic] was a particular friend of father's [Sir Michael Cashin, a politician like his son] -- maybe a few years older -- and always voted for Cashin and no one else. Even his own brother, Mr. John Winsor [sic], who stood against my father on one occasion, did not get his vote."
