In discussion with brother, Doug, in their home in Ferryland on Sunny Hill on June 7, 2014, I learned that he was the younger of the two. He was ill at the time of my visit and I did not meet him. Since Doug was due to celebrate his 90th birthday 16 days later (say June 23), Frank would have been born after 1924. According to Fredi, who accompanied me on the visit, Frank is seriously overweight (~300 lbs.) and practically immobile.

Hi Chris - Hope all is going well with all your new endeavors. Got some new news - just arrived this morning.

GRACE CATHERINE WINDSOR - married to NORMAN "CLAUDE" STOODLEY Died this past Tuesday - September 26, 2006. Stroke - possible complications from Alzheimers which she has suffered from for about 8 years. Also, she and Claude had been Divorced for close to the same length of time. Claude was a recovering Alcoholic and he went back on the bottle and Grace left him. Burial will be tomorrow - September 29 in Ferryland Catholic Church - because of the space needed for guests. Ashes will be interred in the Aquaforte Cemetery - probably in the spring. Grace was Church of England unless she changed since I was in Newfoundland.

Grace is daughter of Wilfred Montgomery Windsor and Amelia Thorne. Monty is son of Henry Charles Windsor. Henry Charles is son of Peter and Anna (Winsor) Windsor. (this is just in case you have trouble finding her).

Claude is a recovering Alcoholic - in abt 2000 he started drinking again, so Grace left him and is living in St. John's.
Grace had been suffering from Alzheimers for several years. Died from a Stroke.

Capt. George S. Field, of Poole, Dorset, married in 1831 Elizabeth Newhook, daughter of Charles Newhook, second, and his first wife, nee Catherine Newell, of Trinity. After sailing out of Trinity in foreign-going fish carriers, Capt. Field settled in New Bonaventure, as school master, he and wife are buried there.

One of his daughters married a Trinity born sea captain named Cross, this couple were the parents of the above Sarah and George Field Cross.

140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date. Also no way of knowing whether the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland as this information was not recorded on the register at Petty Harbour.

Now this is an interesting fact I did not know before: Mont Windsor was the best friend of the politician, Peter Cashin, as well as Dad Morry's best friend, but Dad Morry had not one good word to say about Peter Cashin (though he thought Peter's father, Sir Michael Cashin, was a decent man, for a politician). In his book of memoirs, edited by Ed Roberts, called My Fight For Newfoundland, Peter Cashin has this to say about his first campaign for the House of Assembly and his meeting at that time in Aquaforte:0
"The population of Aquaforte was, and still is, small, and, although scattered, we were able to visit every home in a day. It was and still is the home of one of my best friends, Mont Winsor [sic], who still lives there and raised a fine family. He was married to a Scottish lady from Ayr, whom I knew when both Mont and myself were overseas [with the RNR] in the First World War. I have been meeting members of his family quite frequently who are now grown up and have families of their own. Mont is almost two years yonger than me. Mont's father, Mr. Henry Winsor, [sic] was a particular friend of father's [Sir Michael Cashin, a politician like his son] -- maybe a few years older -- and always voted for Cashin and no one else. Even his own brother, Mr. John Winsor [sic], who stood against my father on one occasion, did not get his vote."

Later in the book he added:
"From Fermeuse over to Aquaforte, the home of the Winsors as well as the Crofts. Yankee Bill and Mont Winsor, my old and loyal friend of bygone happy days in the old Newfoundland Regiment, were still there [in 1949]. Mont's wife had passed away. She was a Scottish lady from Ayr. His family have now grown up and married, and he is an old grandfather like myself. His father, Mr. Henry Winsor, was one of my father's greatest friends and supporters.
I would like to make special mention of this fine old Newfoundlander, Mr. Henry Winsor. Harry, as Father always called him, was one of old Cashin chief advisers on many matters, apart altogether from political issues. In the political elections held in Newfoundland from 1893 until 1919 (eight elections), Mr. Winsor voted for Cashin, and Cashin only-no one else. This action on his part of only voting for the one candidate had its meaning for Mr. Winsor. I understand that although he could have voted for two candidates, he had faith in only one and that one was always Cashin. When his brother, Mr. John Winsor, contested the District against my father in the autumn of either 1900 or 1904, Mr. Henry still voted for the one candidate and that was Cashin. In the election of 1908, the first time that Phil Moore stood with my father, Mr. Henry still voted for the one man-Cashin. He told my father that if he (Cashin) did not like that, he (Winsor) would not vote at all. Mr. Henry said he had no confidence in politicians generally He stated that Mike Cashin was the only one who gave you a straight answer to anything he was asked and that answer was either "Yes" or "No." For a couple of years, around 1909 and 1910, I bought dried salt fish in Aquaforte, and nearly every evening I had dinner at Mr. Winsor's and listened to him tell me that he could never work like Mike and felt that life itself was not worth all the drag a person had to put into it to make a lot of money or become a big success like he said my father and mother had been doing for years. The first time I became a member for Ferryland, Mr. Winsor had already passed away, but his son, Mont, has always been an ardent supporter of mine and gave me that support on four occasions and helped me stronger than ever in the political battle of my life in the autumn of 1928. In this provincial election it wasn't a battle at all-it was a picnic. That was Aquaforte." ³²³⁸

Jacob's date of birth and age are almost certainly wrong. I have August 1, 1862 making him 39, not 29 at the time of the census. This is based upon the church records of birth and moreover his mother would have been 49 in 1872. On the original image of the Census page on the National Archives site the ages and birth dates of both Jacob and Charlotte have both obviously been altered for some reason from the correct dates (1862 and 1858 respectively) to these incorrect ones. Jacob's profession (farmer) and income ($700) are recorded on the census.

Elsie and Anna were the daughters of William Morry and Anna Jennings Windsor, Jacob's sister. Oddly enough, they also appear on the census records with Peter Frederick Morry as well as their own parents. So they really got around in 1901 at census time!

280109: Wanda Garrett's family tree provides this Christening record: "August 1, 1862 Jacob Augustus Winsor, Peter and Anna Merchant Aquaforte Robert Temple"

140813: No way of knowing whether the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland as this information was not recorded on the register at Petty Harbour.

His border crossing cards are very confusing. There are two, both long before the date of issue of the card which is stamped on it as "Act of 1924":

The first is dated May 10, 1909 at Victoria, BC
His first name is spelled out (Jacob) but only his second initial (A) is given and this does not accord with the fact that he apparently always went by the name "Gus".
His occupation is given as "carpenter", though he was always thought to be a farmer.
He gives "Sarah P. Bradshaw" in Mt. Tolmie, BC as his next of kin.
It says he is bound for Olympia, Washington as a permanent immigrant but gives no address.
He is said to be 5' 8-1/2", of dark complexion, with brown eyes and hair and no distinguishing features.

The second is marked for the Port of Vancouver, BC and the date is given as April 23/13

He is said to be 5' 5", of medium complexion, with brown eyes and hair and stooped shoulders.

More mysteries created than solved in this evidence!

The 1910 US Census solves some of the mysteries. Evidently he and Charlotte divorced and he married a second time to a woman named Maude with whom he had a son in 1909 in Olympia, Washington

By the 1930 Census he and son Malcolm have moved to Watsonville, Santa Cruz, California and are operating a fruit farm according to the census that year but there is no sign of Maude despite the fact that Jacob is listed as married. ⁸⁵⁹²

Jean Hayre - At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB on Saturday, January 30th, 2016; Jean Ferries (Windsor) Hayre, 86, wife of the late Max Hayre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born in St. John's Nfld, on June 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Stan and Mary (Ferries) Windsor. She was predeceased by her husband Max in 1991. She is survived by her three sons Doug (Janet) of Sackville, NS, Bill (Chris) and David (Margie) of St. Stephen, NB; grandchildren, Scott (Margot), Matt, Adam (Amanda), Heather (Jeremy), Alyson (Rhett), Meghan (Jordan), Luke (Alycia), Lauren; and her great-granddaughter Aubree; her brothers Doug, Stan (Barb) and Frank (Jeannette), and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Jess (Tom) Goodyear, Sarah (John) Finn and brother Bill Windsor, and her special aunt Anna Bartlett. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Being the ultimate hockey fan, she braved many cold arenas supporting both her children and grandchildren. She was an avid traveler and bridge player. She served as a member of the UCW and as a dedicated volunteer for many years with Meals on Wheels and the Charlotte County Hospital Auxillary. The funeral service in celebration of Jean's life will be on Friday, February 12th at 11 am in the chapel of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, NB, E3L 2B2, 506-466-3110. A reception will immediately follow in the funeral home reception centre. In case of inclement weather, please call the funeral home before venturing out. In lieu of flowers donations to Meals on Wheels, St. Stephen Food Bank or a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
