Bill Windsor was born about 1922, the son of Stanley and Mary Windsor. After his training, he did minesweeping duty around the coast of England. When he was returning home on his first leave, he was aboard the Caribou, which was sunk by a German U-boat on October 14, 1942.
Windsor was not one of the survivors.
The information about Bill Windsor comes from an interview witness
070614:
According to his brother Doug, whom I met today at his home in Ferryland, 16 days short of his 90th birthday, Bill was saved and on a life raft but jumped into the ocean to save another passenger in distress and was drowned in the attempt.

World War II came home to Newfoundland.
ARCHIVAL MOMENT
October 14, 1942
In the early morning hours of October 14, 1942 a lone German torpedo from the German submarine U69 hit the SS Caribou, the Sydney to Port aux Basques ferry on route to Newfoundland, under Captain Benjamin Tavernor. World War II came home to Newfoundland.
Immediately following the hit chaos ensued as passengers, thrown from their bunks by the explosion rushed topside to the lifeboat stations.
Of the 237 people aboard the Caribou when she left North Sydney, 136 had perished. Fifty-seven were military personnel and 49 were civilians. Of the 46-man crew, mostly Newfoundlanders, only 15 remained. Five families suffered particularly heavy losses: the Tappers (5 dead), the Toppers (4), the Allens (3), the Tavernors (the captain and his two sons), and the Skinners (3). The local press reported:
"Many Families [were] Wiped Out."
News of the sinking sparked much outrage as victims, friends and families, and the populace at large, condemned the Nazis for targeting a passenger ferry. An editorialist with The Royalist newspaper in St. John's wrote that the sinking:
"was such a useless crime from the point of view of warfare. It will have no effect upon the course of the war except to steel our resolve that the Nazi blot on humanity must be eliminated from our world."
The Channel/Port aux Basques area was the worst hit as many crew members of the Caribou were local men. A funeral on October 18 for six victims was attended by hundreds of mourners, and a procession that followed the bodies to the grave sites reportedly measured two kilometres long.

Tributes flow for 'beautiful' woman found dead on Waikato River bank
By Natalie Akoorie
Beth Winfield is being remembered as a 'beautiful, sassy woman'.
A young woman found dead in the Waikato River has been described as "beautiful", "sassy" and "stubborn".
Beth Christina Winfield was last seen playing with her two dogs on the banks of the Waikato River near the Ann St reserve in Hamilton on Wednesday afternoon.
But after her dogs became agitated the 23-year-old's body was discovered in the river, about 4pm.
Police are investigating her sudden death, which they say is unexplained.
Winfield's sister Lily Hoebers and her parents Neil and Carole Winfield posted on Facebook yesterday on a dedicated page set up to commemorate the young woman's life.
"My beautiful sister," Hoebers wrote. "I used to always give her crap about the amount of make-up she wore and her crazy hair colours, only because I always thought she was prettier without it."
Hoebers said knowing her sister was dead brought new pain each day.
"Waking up and realising this is not a dream is breaking my heart."
Carole Winfield wrote that her daughter looked "stunning" after being a hair model and father Neil Winfield asked for more photographs.
Dozens of friends posted heartfelt tributes and one put together a slideshow of photos of Winfield to the Rod Stewart song Sailing.
"Farewell baby cousin. You were a pain in the arse, but still my little cousin, and we loved you," wrote a relative.
"RIP Beth Winfield. Will be missed but never forgotten. Had some pretty good times with you and awesome memories with you," one friend wrote.
The family were originally from England but emigrated to New Zealand when Winfield was young.
Yesterday police were appealing for sightings of a black Subaru station wagon parked at the reserve while Winfield played with her dogs.
It was reportedly playing loud music throughout the afternoon. It's not clear if the vehicle belonged to Winfield but it was towed from the scene about 7pm on Wednesday.
Waikato Police wanted to hear from anyone who saw the station wagon parked in the reserve or in the area that afternoon.
They said Winfield was believed to have been throwing a ball and playing with her two dogs on the riverbank.
"Miss Winfield has later been found deceased in the Waikato river a short distance from the vehicle."
The two dogs, Bindi and Toby, alerted members of the public to the tragedy, after they were seen running up and down the river bank with their leads still attached and barking.
Her body was discovered by a member of the public at a spot in the river near the reserve, which is popular with runners and cyclists.
Winfield's funeral will be at Hamilton Central Baptist Church at 12.30pm next Wednesday.
Any sightings of the vehicle or information can be passed on to Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson of the Hamilton CIB on (07) 858 6200 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hamilton woman found dead in Waikato River battled prescription medication addiction
Phillipa Yalden
Beth Christina Winfield loved to throw the ball around with her two dogs on the banks of the Waikato River.
The popular recreational space overlooked by some of Hamilton's priciest real estate provided a sanctuary for the 23 year old, who struggled with an addiction to prescription drugs born out of an earlier back injury.
But on the cool autumn day in October 2016, something mysteriously went awry on the riverbank off Ann St in the Hamilton suburb of Beerescourt.
A mother and daughter discovered Winfield's body beneath a branch in the water 150 metres from where her car was abandoned with the engine running and music blaring.
Her border collie-cross Toby and staffy-cross Bindi were found wet and running around the car.
Lily Hoebers holds a picture of her sister while being comforted by her sister's dogs, Bindy, left, and Toby.

At a Coroner's inquest into the Hamilton woman's death on Friday, it was determined the 23-year-old woman likely drowned after taking prescription pain medication.
There was no sign of foul play or evidence she had taken her own life.
The inquest heard how Winfield, whose family say struggled with anxiety and a personality disorder, had battled to hold down a job after leaving Sacred Heart Girls' College at the age of 16.
She spent time as a truck driver and courier driver, but would not stay in employment for long - perhaps a few weeks before moving on, Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson told the inquest before Coroner Gordon Matenga.
Her friendships could be "on and off", Wilson said, and she stayed in hotels, often pet-friendly motels.
Police inquiries showed Winfield began using prescription drugs after suffering a back injury while moving two truck batteries.
She sought medical attention and was prescribed tramadol for pain.
Shortly before her death, she broke up with her partner and her drug use escalated.
Battling with finances, Winfield's life began "spiralling downwards", Wilson said.
On October 19, 2016 the inquest heard how Winfield purchased prescribed tramadol and codeine from a woman in the carpark of a Hamilton pharmacy.
Winfield had met the woman via Facebook several years earlier. Text messages obtained by a police production order showed on the day of her death, Winfield arranged to meet with the woman with the intention of purchasing medication.
CCTV footage from the dispensing pharmacy showed Winfield, the woman and a man met in the carpark, where Winfield purchased the drugs for $60.
Prescription medication under the woman's name was later found in Winfield's handbag in her car at the Ann St reserve. The woman was later charged and prosecuted for supplying the drugs.
Winfield's body was discovered at 4.58pm that day.
Toxicology results showed traces of codeine, tramadol, the antidepressant amitriptyline and small amounts of alcohol in her system.
Coroner Matenga questioned whether the combined effect of those drugs could have "accentuated each other".
Police examined the scene, including tidal and water levels, and spoke with residents and witnesses. However, no one saw Winfield enter the water that day.
Her car was found parked 25 metres from the river's edge. The windows were down, the engine was running and music was going. Her handbag, cellphone and other possessions were still inside.
Her mother, Carole Winfield, questioned whether reports a man had been with her in the vehicle were substantiated.
Wilson said there was no information to confirm that.
"The majority of statements were in relation to her just being by herself with the dogs."
Winfield was a strong swimmer, her father, Neil Winfield, said while asking if there were any evidence his daughter had tried to get out of the water.
"The riverbank had some damage which was consistent of someone falling down it or sliding down the bank; unfortunately, there was a lot of other disturbance by the dogs going up and down," Wilson replied.
"I can't provide any evidence as to her state when she went in or why she didn't swim."
Based on evidence and lack of eye-witness accounts, Wilson could not say exactly how Winfield ended up in the water.
"It is my personal view that she consumed tramadol and codeine through the course of the day.
"I can only assume she's gone down to the river, whether to retrieve a ball, as there was a ball located in the river, and then has drowned as a result, or as a result of consuming the drugs, she hasn't been able to swim and subsequently drowned."
Coroner Matenga reserved his findings but said it was likely Winfield's death would be ruled accidental.
After the inquest, Winfield's family wanted to remember the "confident and crazy" girl.
Although they would never get closure, her parents and sister Lily Hoebers wanted to remind others struggling with anxiety or addiction that help is always out there.
"There will never be closure, as we won't know what happened."

Although the 1900 US Census does not indicate to whom she is married, we know it is not Levi and it is also not Guy because he is shown on the census as single so the only other son is James. The other possibility is that she is Levi's first wife but there is no evidence to support that he had a first wife as he is shown as a bachelor on his marriage record when he married Phyl.
