On the Nfld. Gen Web  transcription of the St. Thomas marriage record for Joseph Wheeler and Mary Hannah Gosse, James and John Wheeler were listed as the witnesses to the marriage. It is my feeling that they were his brothers and I have therefore added information on the spouse and children of James Wheeler to the family tree file.

281005: Record of birth of son as recorded on NGB website gives their date of marriage thus: William Richard WHEELER Joseph & Mary Hannah GOSSE b May 3 1875 St. Johns bap May 16 1875 fisherman Married 1871 St Thos Ang Ch. But note that such notations were frequently added by the volunteer transcriber for NGB and did not actually appear on the register.

28/08/01 Baptismal registry at Holy Trinity, Torbay shows her born to Will Goss and Maria (Marie?) Codner and the name was spelled Hanna, not Hannah. Surname of Mary Hannah and her relations often spelled Gosse in birth records etc.

Parents are shown on Marriage records at Holy Trinity as having been married only on November 12 1850 but Mary Hannah's birth is not recorded as illegitimate. Needs to be further researched.

030711: Left one fith share of estate of sister Emma Ann White in March 1911. The five heirs were: Samuel Goss, Thomas Goss, Mary Hannah Wheeler, Margaret Day and Elizabeeth Gushue. The estate was valued at $2779.52 but bequests to various religious organistaions took a good portion of that amount. Presumably other brothers and sisters died before this date.

Her baptismal record is dated 24 sep 1851 and gives no hint of when she was born. I am leery of accepting a birth date from a Census form so therefore I am inclined to suspect that she was actually born on 20 Sep 1851, not 20 Sep 1850, which I had been using based on the 1921 Census information. That date would make her illegitimate and I do not think that this was the case. Therefore I am changing her date of birth to simply indicate it preceded the baptismal date pending an actual date being found.

I was going through the burial registers for Forest Rd. Cemetery at The Rooms these last few days and, not expecting to find a burial record for Mary Hannah Goss Wheeler since it was supposed to forbidden as she was an RC, I missed seeing it.

At the end of the day I was going over the records one last time for records of people close to me. In so doing, I discovered that there is a burial record for Mary Hannah Goss Wheeler, in fact it is on a page I had already photographed to copy to the page of Francis E. Le Messurier whose name appears immediately above hers. Only her entry is so faint (most likely entered in pencil rather than pen in case it had to be erased on second thought) that it is very nearly invisible and is mostly illegible.

As best as I can make out it reads:
No. 27. March 8 [1933]. Quidi Vidi Road. Senile Myocarditis. Mary Wheeler. [No grave location given]. Age 81. March 8 [Burial same day as death]. [No parish given]. $6.50 [Standard fee]. [Doctor's name indecipherable]."

I have only now just discovered that ALL (I think) of the children of the marriage of Joseph A. Wheeler and Mary Hannah Gosse were baptised twice; once in the Anglican Church (St. Thomas) and once in the Roman Catholic Church, though the records that I have found so far on Ancestry do not say in which specific church. It may that the baptisms took place in Torbay (the pzarish of Mary Hannah Gosse) but I believe that most if not all were performed in St. John's at the RC Basilica. I hope to find the answer to this through further research as time goes by.
