050714:
Something needs to be clarified concerning the church attended by the families of Whelans/Phelans, as well as the Houghs and the families into which they married in Ireland, in the 1800s, and hence where they were all buried, if they died in Ireland. David Stevens and I researched this but it was his wife Maree who found the crucial missing information online.

The centre of life in this part of Tipperary, North Riding, prior to the purges and depredation of Oliver Cromwell's forces was not the modern town of Cloughjordan but rather Modreeny. After the destruction of the old RC church and most of the homesteads of Catholics in that vicinity, a movement toward what is now Cloughjordan began to take place. But a Church of Ireland was erected in Modreeny on the same spot previously occupied by an ancient medieval RC church believed to have been destroyed by Cromwell. The Modreeny C of I church was only replaced by worshipers in that faith by the current church in Cloughjordan (St. Kieran's) in 1837.

The following information is found in the book In and out of School-In the home of the MacDonaghs by Roche Williams. Page 93: "Up to this time the only Catholic church in the area was located in Grawn, a mile and a half from the town (of Cloughjordan). During the Penal Days a small thatched chapel was situated there on the opposite side of the road from the present structure, beside what was then the priest's house; this house was in place up to forty years ago when it was demolished. In 1830, the then parish priest, Fr. Thomas Dunne built a new church at Grawn on a site provided by the O'Kennedys of Coolnamona. This was a spacious building, cruciform in shape, the place of worship for the Catholic people of Cloughjordan and the surrounding areas for many years, who travelled by horse, pony or donkey and trap or who walked along the many Mass-paths that linked the countryside to the place."

The townland name given is Grawn, although that townland name is no longer in use. I believe the name "Grawn" comes from another adjacent townland called Garraunorish.

There seems to be an absence of information on this church, or rather a great deal of conflicting information about it is given online. Once thing is certain, before this church was built, it was the practice to bury Catholics as well as Church of Ireland adherents in the one cemetery that did exist, that surrounding the Modreeny church. And after the Grawn church came into being, the Catholics would have been buried close to it. So when one sees reference to a Catholic being buried in Modreeny cemetery, it is probably true, but they may also be buried in the area surrounding the ruins of the old RC Chapel of Grawn. Most likely earlier burials were at Modreeny and later ones at Grawn.

Only late in the 1800s did the centre of faith for RCs shift to the town of Cloughjordan with the construction of St. Michael's and St. John's. Still, even then, some of the burials of the older RC parishioners would have taken place in the old location in Grawn or even in Modreeny to be amongst their ancestors. C of I adherents had no choice, since the new church did not have a cemetery in the churchyard. They are still buried to this day in the Modreeny cemetery.

It is worthy of note that the Quinlisks of Behamore/Laughane/Silverstream, who were inter-related with the Houghs and Whelans by marriage, tended to bury their dead across the border in County Offaly at the cemetery of Kilcomin near Shinrone. The reason seems to be that it was closer than the cemeteries in Modreeny and Grawn. Only in the 1900s did some of them begin to be buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's and St. John's.

220814:

I had recorded this man's name as Daniel Hough the same as that of his son and based this on my remembrance of information received by Jamie in a letter from her Auntie Elizabeth years ago. I am now of the opinion that either she gave us incorrect information or I copied down his name incorrectly from the information contained in her letter. David Stevens had his name as James or Jim and based this on information he had received from a direct descendant, Mary [Hough] Whelan, the sister of Pat Hough, who owns the farm and pub in Lorrha. Mary's daughter Liz has just confirmed this information and I am therefore correcting the name to be James/Jim. This name is almost certainly correct based upon the Christian name given to Daniel Hough's first born son in conformance with Irish naming traditions.

Because of this I am today removing the references I had attached previously to this man from the Tithe Applotment books and substituting them for ones pertaining to James Hough which appear to be the relevant citations.

Here is the information received from Liz Whelan by David Stevens on August 19, 2014:

My grandfather Danny Hough had told me that his grandfather Daniel Hough (m Betty Whelan) was born in 1829 but I cannot confirm that
He also said that his great grandfather was called Jim Hough - a short man, a carpenter by occupation, and that he was buried where you stand to ring the bell at the Friary in Lorrha - I am unsure of this although my grandmother Maureen Moylan/Hough told me that the Hough and Moylans were evicted in the early 1800's from around Grange in the Parish of Lorrha -again I have no proof.
I was also sure that Pat Hough (mother's brother) had shown me where Jim Hough had lived in Knocknacree not far from where the Whelan's came from.

So I asked mother last week - now that all the grandchildren have departed to their various parents and homes.
She confirmed that his name was Jim and recalls her father and his brothers Jim and Phil talking about him, he was a trademan -she could not confirm carpenter and lived in Knocknacree. She thinks there was only one child -Daniel. Dan and Betty Hough bought Laughane on their return from Australia ( they got the nick name of the Bendigo Gold diggers). Pat had taken her on more that one occasion with visitors to Knocknacree.

Daniel and Jim being related would make sense and may account for them both moving to the one area.
I found Jim (James) in the Griffith's valuation in Knocknacree on a small plot which would suggest the trademan. That land passed to Bridget Hough hence my belief that that this was his wife as the only way for a woman to get land then was to be a widow or rich.
This would be supported by Dan and Betty's first child being called James - he was born in late 1856 and died on the way to Australia. They then called their 2nd child James also - traditionally the first son would be named after the father's father and the 2nd after the mother's father in their case Thomas.

I hope this makes sense
Best Wishes
Liz
