141019 from Ethel May Bradshaw Lytton's diary as presented in instalments in the St. Luke's Prescription:'
"Claude brought me a diamond and ruby ring also silk waist, bible, etc. A wee silk dress and bonnet for Evelyn. A black velvet suit for Gerald, and brown shoes for both. Waists for the girls, and silk for a dress for Mother. Mrs. Rowe sent me dark blue silk for a waist, stocking to Gerald, and pinafore for Evelyn. We did not move home from Mother's till Feb 11th 1916. Too much snow to get the children home. Mr. W. Hill brought them home on a sleigh. Claude only saw his brother Gerald for two days when the latter Regt [regiment], was ordered to Egypt. They landed at Alexandria, but later left for Tripoli.
Will and Claude went around London together and had a good time. They went to Westminster, the National Gallery and the Wallace Collection, together. Mrs. Rowe was so good to Claude.

010621:
There is no way of knowing which of several men named Kenneth McLea was the actual father of this child. On balance, I have assumed that it was the one who was present in St. John's and old enough at the time to have filled this role. It could theoretically have been his young son of the same name or the man who later married Mary Lucretia Rendell Carter, but the former was really too young and the latter was not thought to have come to Newfoundland by 1844.

Here is how Edward Chafe described this baptism entry:
"It is hoped that this will be kept clean"
Roman Catholic Basilica registers, 1 January 1844 \endash The plight of Mary Coughlan
Kenneth John McLea, Esq. was born in 1800 at Greenock, Scotland. He was arrived at St. John's in 1828 as an agent for J. & W. Stewart and eventually became a leading merchant. Kenneth married Elizabeth Brine in 1829 and they had seven children. In 1843 he began an illicit relationship with Mary Coughlan and she gave birth to their son, Robert. There was no criminal investigation into the birth of this illegitimate child. Great pains were taken to hide the scandal and protect his wife and young children. The child baptized secretly by a Roman Catholic priest. Kenneth McLea entered politics and was well-esteemed by the public.
I suspect that Robert changed the spelling of his name to avoid the possibility of anyone discovering evidence of his illegitimate birth. 6337
