Emma was the daughter of Dr. Mayne, a surgeon with the Royal Navy.
130821:
Note that all the information on the Stirlings came over from a merge with Jean Carter Stirling's family tree in the summer of 2021. Even so, there are some discrepancies between the information in the merged tree and her research notes on this family which she gave me around 2021. I'm really not sure which is more current so therefore am leaving the information as is unless I have sources to correct it.

Notes
General:
140813: On the birth/baptismal record for son James as transcribed on the NGB website from the LDS microfilm of a church register transcript her name is given as Margaret. It may be a transcription error as elsewhere her name is given as Fanny, normally short for Frances, not Margaret.Medical:
301113: I have come to the conclusion that George Mead(e) must have remarried after his first wife, Fanny Mayo died, shortly after they were married and more than likely in childbirth. There are four children shown in this family and, although the dates of birth for two are unknown, two were born after Fanny's death and there was no time between her marriage and death to have had more than one child. Therefore, I am adding another wife named Margaret (surname unknown) to George Mead and making her the mother of the four children.
121223:
I cannot explain why one birth record was attributed to a woman named Margaret, but I have found the information on George Mead's second wife, whom he married a year after Fanny died.
On May 14, 1850, George Mead would remarry to Margaret Ryan of Ferryland. The register shows that he was from Gillingham in Dorset. Although she was a Catholic, they baptised their first child at least in the C of E Church. 282
Given the fact that this was one year after her marriage to George Mead and also that Robert Carter did not mention the cause of death when he mentioned this in his Journal (such topics were tapu in those days) it seems highly likely that she died in childbirth
