So I'm thinking the Chieftain suffered a fire in 1907-08 and then was back in business in 1909. A snippet from the Alex MacLean story it said "the steamer playing a hose on the burning tug", "the owners of the Northwest made a salvage claim against the Chieftain", and "MacLean ended up bringing the Chieftain down to Port Essington for repairs". Then there's the ad in the Victoria Daily Colonist that states "This fine tug now open for towage, charter, etc" leading one to believe that it might not have been earlier.
