Notes
General:
From Anthony Oliphant's website 12/06/01: "3. JANET WILSON2 OLIPHANT (GEORGE TREECHER1) was born Abt. 1854. Shemarried JONAH KENDLE COAKER December 20, 1881 in St. John's Newfoundland. Notes for JANET WILSON OLIPHANT: Janet's first husband was a farmer, they had Coakers Farm. It was handed down from the family. Jonah her husband passed away. I don't know what from, or when. I heard Jonah was an MP, (Mounted Police) I have not confirmed it though. When he died Lindsey Oliphant put on his headstone " A good Christian". Janet later took a job in St. John's at Dick's & Co. on Water St. It was called the book binder. I assume that's what they did. She met a Norweigan man while working there. John Shaw or Shae, and eventually married him. They had two daughters, and lived in the Torbay area. It was told to me by Queen Maloney, that Janet had converted to Church of England when she married her first husband Jonah. And in her last day's herbrother tried to talk her into coming back to her church. Her currenthusband said "If thats what you decide, I'll not stop you", Queen said "Quote" She died as she lived, a member! (Church of England). Queensaid, "I remember her as being a very stately woman," I guess large in size."

NB:

The above information is mostly correct with the exception of the name of the person in question!!! It should have been Jane Elizabeth Oliphant. This was corrected in Anthony Oliphant's paper record of his FTM file sent to me on June 22, 2001. Here is the corrected information:

5. JANE ELIZABETH4 OLIPHANT (GEORGE TREACHER3, WILLIAM GORDON OLIPHANT2 SR., WILLIAM1 OLIPHANT) was born 1854 in Aquaforte, Nfld., and diedUnknown in Torbay, NFLD.. She married (I) JOSEPH Kendle COAKER December 20, 1881 in St. John's Newfoundland. He was born 1856. She married (2) JOHN SHAW OR SHEA 1888.

Notes for JANE ELIZABETH OLIPHANT: Jane's first husband Joseph was a farmer; he had Coaker's Farm in NFLD. It was handed down from his family. Apparently, after the death of their daughter Laura Isabel Oliphant Coaker in 1895, Joseph, Jane's husband passed away shortly there after. Jane went to Boston for a while, as her sister Mrs. Furlong was living there with her husband. Jane later returned to NFLD, and took a job in St. John's at Dick's & Co. on Water St. The business was called the bookbinder. There she met a Norwegian man, John Shaw or Shea. They eventually were married, and hadtwo daughters. The family lived in the Torbay area. It was told to me, when Jane married Joseph her first husband; she converted from Catholicism to Church of England. In her last days her brother Lindsey Oliphant tried to talk her into coming back to the Catholic Church. Her current husband Mr. Shaw or Shea said; "If this is what you decide, I will not stop you I,. It was said; "Quote " She died as she lived; a member! (Church of England). Jane was also called "Janet" She was described as being a stately woman. " the two daughters of John Shaw or Shea, had not been found at the time of this publication. I never found out their names.

Jane was also listed as a sponsor to a baptism in the RC records for Ferryland:

1871, Baptised- Roberta Caroline Condon -daughter of Robert Condon & Emily Jones, Spon by, William A. Morry & Jane Elizabeth Oliphant.

John Oliphant - Excerpt from Forget-Me-Not: Fallen Boy Soldiers by Gary F. Browne, 2010, pages 31-32

Newfoundland Constabulary Sergeant George Oliphant and his wife like so many other parents, would suffer much grief while mourning the death of their son. and then, suddenly, be advised then-soldier boy was alive. The Oliphant family's ordeal was the subject of an article which appeared in a local St. John's newspaper dated March 17,1917:

Private Jack Oliphant Very Much Alive

It will be remembered that a few days ago Sergt. Oliphant of the Police Court, received two letters, both acquainting him of the death of his son, Private Jack Oliphant. The News at the time discredited the story because of no official information, and it now turns out that we were correct. Yesterday's casualty list conveys the information that Pt. Jack Oliphant is at the 3rd Clearing Station, suffering from muscular rheumatism, having been admitted on March 3rd. Naturally, the news was joyfully received by Sergeant and Mm. Oliphant, who had been mourning their son as dead.
