I am linking these two boys, Patrick and Daniel, as grandchildren of John and Honora Quinlisk via their son John. It seems most likely that he is the father though I do not know at this time who the mother may be. The gravestone lists the two boys by their Christian names only which I take to mean that their surname was the same as the grandfather and the only son I have for him is John. It's a stretch but the only way I can include them on the tree at this time pending further information.

A few days ago I received by mail a copy of the book "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly" by Stephen Callaghan, purchased from the Offaly County Council Heritage OIffice following a lead from Tommy Quinlisk.

Amongst the photographs and transcripts of gravestones of interest I found one that included the names of siblings Denis, Edward and Nora Quinlisk, along with "Eileen Cleary" wife of Patrick Cleary. The stone was erected in special honour of Daniel Quinlisk by his nephew only identified on the stone as "Patrick" with no surname given but presumably Quinlisk.

I think I have identified the first four (including "Eileen") as the children of Patrick Quinlisk born at Behamore around 1840. He had four children: Edward by his first wife Judith Gaynor; and then Daniel, Nora and "Nannie" or Annie by his second wife, Margaret Flannery. They would have all been of an age to match the dates on this stone.

But the "Eileen" has me thrown off. There was clearly no child of this family by this name. And the stone gives no inkling of why she is mentioned there along with her husband. I surmise that one of the four children of Patrick married (probably Nannie or Annie) and that this was her daughter. But that remains to be proved.

On balance, however, I am positive that I have identified the correct family because they were residents of Mucklone West on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Why their parents are not remembered on this memorial stone is not known.

Nora O'Meara noted in her 17 July letter to Jane Leahy that records for Toomevara only start in 1831.

18/02/01 The more that Jane Leahy and I have explored the likely roots of Ellen Quinlisk, who emigrated to America, the less likely it is that this is the father of the same Ellen and the more likely it is that the Ellen who emigrated was Jamie's as well as Jane's Great Grand Aunt, daughter of "Big Pat" Quinlisk. The pieces all tie together much better and I may erase this little group of Quinlisks from my database unless they can be linked to the family in some other way.

180108: Well I have not erased them yet and probably won't. These families have to tie together somehow. Today Fergus Kennedy took down the marriage and the birth of several of their children from the Toomevara church register, a microfilm of which we have rented at the Nanaimo FHC. Here is the note pertaining to their marriage: "Oct 4 1830; Daniel Quinlisk & Mary Gleeson " On Deman" ( d missing in filming ?? )"

Fergus and I have deduced that the "On deman" notation means they did not pay the usual fee right away. The reason could be that they were in a hurry to get married. Their first daughter Ellen was born "prematurely" 5 months later! Note that Norah O'Meara is wrong again. This record was for 1830, a year before she thought the register began.

June 27, 2007: I'm not absolutely certain that this Daniel is the son of the Daniel Quinlisk and Mary Gleeson whom I have shown as resident of Knockinglass because his residence and that of his father as listed on his marriage certificate is Ballygibbon. But the fact that his father is named as Daniel Quinlisk and the two witnesses at the wedding are both Gleeson's, Mary's maiden name, makes it more than likely that they are his parents.

I had not been able to connect this small family Dan Quinlisk and Mary Hanley to Jamie's Quinlisks in Behamore and Silverstream but it seems likely they are connected.

Today I was able to merge them into the existing listings for Daniel Quinlisk and Mary Hawley. The common factor was the locale - Ballygibbon, though in one case that was listed as Cloughjordan and in the other Nenagh. It is one and the same place so the two couples are the same despite the slight difference in the spelling of her surname, probably an error on the church transcript
