A few days ago I received by mail a copy of the book "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly" by Stephen Callaghan, purchased from the Offaly County Council Heritage OIffice following a lead from Tommy Quinlisk.

Amongst the photographs and transcripts of gravestones of interest I found one that included the names of siblings Denis, Edward and Nora Quinlisk, along with "Eileen Cleary" wife of Patrick Cleary. The stone was erected in special honour of Daniel Quinlisk by his nephew only identified on the stone as "Patrick" with no surname given but presumably Quinlisk.

I think I have identified the first four (including "Eileen") as the children of Patrick Quinlisk born at Behamore around 1840. He had four children: Edward by his first wife Judith Gaynor; and then Daniel, Nora and "Nannie" or Annie by his second wife, Margaret Flannery. They would have all been of an age to match the dates on this stone.

But the "Eileen" has me thrown off. There was clearly no child of this family by this name. And the stone gives no inkling of why she is mentioned there along with her husband. I surmise that one of the four children of Patrick married (probably Nannie or Annie) and that this was her daughter. But that remains to be proved.

On balance, however, I am positive that I have identified the correct family because they were residents of Mucklone West on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Why their parents are not remembered on this memorial stone is not known.

At this time there is no way to establish with any degree of certainty the relationship of this James Quinlisk. He was not a member of thedirect line back from Jamie or Fergus Kennedy because the dates of his birth and death do not accord with any of the James in their ascendancies. So I am postulating a whole new family comprised of father John, mother Margaret and sons John and James (among other siblings?) wholived in Behamore at the same time as Jamie and Fergus's families. I am basing all of this solely on the death certificates of John, Margaret and James, which appear to indicate a relationship among them but that do not accord in dates with any of the known families formerly on record.

The death certificate of James reads: Date and Place of Death: First of June 1873, Behamore Name and Surname: James Quinlisk Sex: Male Condition: Bachelor Age last Birthday: 18 Rank, Profession and Occupation: Son of Farmer Certified Cause of Death, and Duration of Illness:Phthisis [Tuberculosis], 3 months, Certified Signature, Qualifications and Residence of Informant: M.
