250307: Today I am adding a new son to the children of John Quinlisk, that is a brother to "Big Pat", based largely on information from Fergus Kennedy's research that there were only three Quinlisk tithe payers in1823 in Cloughjordan area, a Patrick Quinlisk in Behamore Smith, and two Michael's in Townfields, one of them designtated "Junior" and evidently the son of the other Michael. Fergus believes that it is from these two Michaels that he descends. There is limited information on which to base this since records in Catholic churches were not permitted in those days. Here is his logic in this regard:
"Now for my theories about the Quinlisks. My first supposition is based on the Tithe records from 1823, when we can find only three Quinlisks living in the Cloughjordan/Modreeny area - Patrick ("Big Pat"?) in Behamore Smith, and Michael and Michael Jr. living next door to each other in Townfields. I'm guessing that they are father and son, and that Michael Jr. is the father of Kate Quinlisk, my great-grandmother, who was born in 1835. I have designated Big Pat and the older Micheal ( my g.g.g.grandfather ? ) as brothers, and therefore sons of John Quinlisk ( 1753-1833 ), from your gravestone information."
"For Michael "Sr.", I've given him the other four male individuals I found in the Tithe/Griffith/civil records; 1) Michael Jr., as above 2) Patrick, who died in Behamore Smith on 24 Jun 1870 3)William, who died in Behamore Smith on 23 Dec 1870 4) John, of Behamore Hawkshaw, who died on 7 Dec 1892"
290507: Fergus Kennedy has collected a great deal of information from websites and other online sources pertaining to the earliest records of Quinlisks in the Cloughjordan area. One of the earliest accounts is the Tithe records of Oct. 29, 1823. This preceded the Roman Catholic emancipation in 1829. Before emancipation, RCs were forced to pay a tithe to the Church of Ireland even though they were not of that faith. Records are spotty and incomplete - not every land owner was nailed for this unjust tax. But in Cloughjordan three were. One was a Patrick in the townland then known as Behamore Smith (now Silverstream). Two were named Michael (one was Jr., obviously the son of the other one) and both lived in Townfields, which is on the Toomyvara side of Cloughjordan away from the Silverstream/Behamore area where all the recent generations of Quinlisks live. The Patrick who paid the tithe in Behamore Smith was most likely the ancestor of Jamie. The two Michaels are not known for sure but I suspect it was this Patrick's brother and nephew.
130714:
Today I came upon for the first time a website known as Historicgraves.com and on it I found what appears to be a complete list of all graves in the Kilcomin, Shinrone, Offaly, Ireland cemetery where the ancient Quinlisk monument is found and where most of Jamie's ancestors were buried. There are photos and transcripts of most gravestones and one of them pertains to this Michael I believe. The epitaph reads:
"ERECTED BY JOHN QUINLISK
OF BEHAMORE IN MEMORY OF
HIS FATHER MICK QUINLISK
DIED APRIL 2nd 1810
AGED 31 YEARS ALSO UNCLE
JAMES QUINLISK DIED
APRIL 11TH 1810 AGED 29"
I suspect that the "Mick" is mistranscribed and it is actually a shortform for Michael (Michl). On the basis of this evidence I am adding a James as a brother of Michael.
131016:
Interesting to note there is no mention of the mother of John who erected this monument to his father and uncle. Because of this we do not know her name. One wonders the reason for this.
240124:
Yesterday I received in the mail a copy of "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly" by Stephen Callaghan which I purchased from the Offaly County Council thanks to a tip from Tommy Q. It contains images of all of the Quinlisk gravestones in Kilcomin cemetery, in some cases better quality ones than I had already, as well as transcripts of those stones and other details that help to support or correct what I had previously.
For the gravestone erected by John Quinlisk in memory of his father Michael and uncle James here is what they have in this book:

180307: "My Quinlisks immigrated throughout the 1870s and 1880s. Even the parents, Michael b. 1828 and his wife Johanna, b. 1821, immigrated to the US in 1880. That must have been a hard trip for them, but their children were here or coming over soon. They all settled initially in Gardner, MA, so I am not surprised that you met people in Canada and the US who are Quinlisks. With all 9 of Michael and Johanna's childrenhere, they began to spread out across the countries. I assumed that they did not have a lot of money, because they moved so much (land=wealth), but they must have had some money for all 11 of them to immigrate."

Email from Jane Leahy 20 June 2000:
"Thomas Harmon married Ellen Quinlisk, who Ciss [Jamie's Aunt Margaret Quinlisk] identifies as her father's aunt. A generation later, Michael's daughter Sarah marries Ellen's son, James. And a researcher herein the states, a friend of a Quinlisk cousin, found a ship's log thatsuggested Michael and Ellen came over to the US together in about 1851. From that I have inferred a family relationship???? "
This doesn't establish a clear relationship between Jane's Quinlisk ancestor (Michael) and Jamie's but it hints strongly in that direction.
Email from Jane Leahy Aug. 5, 2000:
"Michael had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. One son married latein life; the other, my g-grandfather John, had 8 children, 3 sons, William, Michael and John (of course!). Only one of them had a son, but the son and his wife had no children. So the name will die in that bigfamily when Bill dies. "

Email dated 1/03/01from Mary Harmon Braun, direct descendant of Michael's daughter, Sarah:
I have a copy of Michael Quinlisk's death certificate. It states he was born March 4, 1833 in Ireland. The parents were John Quinlisk andMargarett Ryan both of Ireland. He was 81 yrs, 5 mths and 10 days old, a retired farmer. Death date the same as you have. He is buried inCalvery Cemetery in Middletown, Ohio Butler Co. USA. William Quinlisk signed the death certificate in Trenton, Ohio Butler Co. I have estate papers for Michael Quinlisk. I have sent copies of these to Jane. Did she forward any information from these estate papers to you?Of course the children of this man were listed as John Quinlisk, Sallie Harmon, Lizzie Ryan and William Quinlisk, Anne as the widow.
I also have the estate papers for Anne Fogarty Quinlisk as well as death certificate.
Email from Mary Harmon Braun 01/03/01:
I found in the index, The Famine Immigrants List of Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New York 1846-1851 , Vol. VII, pg. 418 a Michael Quinlak 18yrs, on July 9, 1851 leaving Liverpool on ship New Hampshire. I also found an Ellen Quinlist 16yrs, a servant, on the same ship. Above her name was a Catherine Ryan 36 yrs. I didn't see anythingthat would indicate they were related at this time. The estimated date of their births would seem to connect with the ages of these two.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
200504: Tim Harmon provided a copy of the death certificate which gave exact details on date of birth and death, age at birth, parentage and wife'sname. All of this disproves the information formerly provided by Norah O'Meara, Tipperary North Family History Foundation to Jane Leahy on17 July 2000. I had long suspected Norah O'Meara was not providing correct information and I now believe this proves the innaccuracy and untrustworthiness of her research. She has Michael's baptism happening 3years before his birth! I'm sure her information pertains to another Michael Quinlisk, not this one.
230807: In an email from Jane Leahy the following information was provided: "I've heard from PJ Quinlisk a couple of times this year - he last called on the 4th of July! We talked a bit earlier and he had mentionedthat he thought my Michael Quinlisk (my g-g-grandfather) was from a probably related (to his line) Quinlisk most likely from Co. Offaly. Itis pretty certain that Ellen Quinlisk Harmon was either his cousin orsister. As I know the names of both of their parents and they appear to be different, I assume cousins. They did travel to the US together and settled in the same small farming community in SW Ohio. Michael was my grandmother's, Florence Quinlisk Ryan, grandfather. Her husband's (William James Ryan) grandmother was Anne Quinlisk Melampy who PJ has told me was from one of the Silver Stream Quinlisk families. (He showed me the ruins of her home on nearby land). So I'm a Quinlisk descendant from two different families! The Quinlisk/Melampy family became very large in Ohio - lots of descendants of Anne and James. Anne diedat about 40 yrs and James was in his late 40s. I have lots of data from the US and Ireland on that family - and of course still have lots of questions. I'd be happy to share any of that info with you if you are interested. It used to be on the tip of my tongue, but now I have to open those boxes and search! I do have photos of some of the Ohio Quinlisks if relevant to you. Michael Quinlisk was the executor of James and Anne's will, and Thomas Harmon was also named." 181008 We only know of this Michael from the memorial erected by his brother Patrick on which he is mentioned. The fact that he is mentioned and not a wife or children tends to suggest he died unmarried.
281013:
Despite the reservation expressed above, I think there is enough of a possibility that this Michael is the same one that later married Eliza Herton and bore a child named Bridget Quinlisk in 1844 that I have merged the two today.
