Marriage: 8 Feb 1846 - Shinrone, Roscrea, Offaly, Leinster, Ireland 14,2086,4617,7641

Marriage Events

• Minister/Priest: Father Francis Meehan, 8 Feb 1846, Shinrone, Roscrea, Offaly, Leinster, Ireland.

• Witnesses: John Cleary and Margaret Quinlan, 8 Feb 1846, Shinrone, Roscrea, Offaly, Leinster, Ireland. Marriage Notes

According to Extract from the Marriage Record transcribed by Father Enda Burke, PP, St. Mary's in Parish of Shinrone, Diocese of Killaloe, (sent by mail by Jane Leahy on 20/02/01) John Quinlisk was incorrectly listed in the record as John Quinlan (same surname as wife).

Sponsors were John Cleary and Margaret Quinlan. The latter possibly an error since it is the bride's name.

Father Francis Meehan performed the ceremony.

Father Burke incorrectly reversed the digits in the year of marriage; he recorded it as 8/2/1864, when it should have been 8/2/1846.

Note that the actual register was for the combined Parish of Shinrone and Ballingarry and it isn't shown in which church the marriage was performed. But in the margin beside the entry the word ""Clonlisk" appears. This was not the Townland to which John Quinlisk belonged, which was Loughaun. Could be an error in the entry in the register or it is possible that was her Townland.

Notes
General:
Place of residence at marriage looks like Clonlisk on the hand-written transcription of marriage record by Norah O'Meara, TNFHF but others have suggested this should be Clonmel. I am certain they are wrong and will make the change today (220824)

040607:

Her death certificate downloaded by Fergus Kennedy reads: Date and Place of Death: Twenty-third September 1898, Lahawn [sic] Name and Surname: Margaret Quinlisk Sex: Female Condition: Widow Age last Birthday: 73 Rank, Profession and Occupation: Widow of Farmer Certified Cause of Death, and Duration of Illness: Old Age; No Med. Att. Signature, Qualifications and Residence of Informant: John Quinlisk present at death, Lahawn [sic] When Registered: Third October, 1898 Signature of Registrar: looks like M. McLaughlin

080907: There is some confusion in regard to place of birth. Clonlisk is not in Shinrone parish. It is in Kilcomin (Kilcommon) parish. But people do give their address as Clonlisk, Shinrone even today. There is only one Quinlan landowner in Griffith's Valuation in Shinrone but there are several in Kilcomin. I suspect her actual place of birth should therefore be given as Clonlisk, not Shinrone, but I will wait for more information to make this change.

080821:

ON daughter Anne's baptism record the mother's name appears as Cath Quinlan, not Margaret Quinlan, which was her real name. Norah O'Meara substituted Margaret in her transcript of this record done for Rita Elkins in 2000. She should have made note that this error existed in the original record and that she was correcting it based on the preponderance of other information showing her to be named Margarert Quinlan.

The name Quinlan has been added as an alias because it appears in a family tree on FamilySearch, placed there by a user name JM508. I have no idea who this is nor how he came to the conclusion that this was her maiden name since he gives no sources. So for now this must be treated with some measure of suspicion.

Notes
General:
It seems that Anne and 9 of her children died around the same time. Whether this was a famine related catastrophe or disease is not known. This much is derived from the information on the Memorial in Cloughjordan RC Church yard erected in honour of family members by her brother Patrick:

"The folowing information was found on a photograph sent to us by Jane Leahy on August 4, 2000 showing the Memorial Pat erected in Clougjordan RC Cemetary in honour of his parents, wife, siblings and children, where he, his son and grandson are also memorialised. It says:

"ERECTED BY PATK. QUINLISK of Roscrea in Memory of His Wife CATHERINE alias HEENAN Who Died Octr 12th 1869 Aged 45 Yrs. Also His Father PATK. Who Died May 13th 1861 Aged 75 Years. His Mother JOHANA Died in A.D. 1825 Aged 36 Years. His Brother MICH. and Sister Anne and Nine Children. And Also His Two Daughters Hanna Mary Died 4 Feby 1881 Aged 23 Yrs. 120908: Verifying information against the data available online at the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre has shown that information on the family memorial contains many errors of date, age and even spelling of names

240124:
In the book "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly" written by Stephen Callaghan in 2023 and referred to me by Tommy Quinlisk, this is how the memorial reads:

Note that I have made minor corrections to the above epitaph based on a careful reading of several photos of the stone which were taken previously and may have been clearer and easier to read than in 2022 when Callaghan did his transcript.
