From the MUN DAI, Evening Telegram for January 25 1912 - two separate articles on the death of William Sesk.

That Accident on the Portia.
From Capt. Fitzpatrick of the Portia we learn particulars of the death of the man Sesk which occurred at Ferryland on Thursday the 11th inst. The man was a passenger on the ship for Ferryland and had a skiff load of freight on board. He sent two friends who were on the ship ashore in the mail boat to call his sons and tell them to come with a skiff to take the freight and at 7 a.m. they loaded their skiff by the ship's side. The man's sons were in the skiff and Sesk was on the deck. The second mate told the men to drop the skiff along to the ladder so that the man might get into the skiff safely. Instead Sesk caught a rope hanging over the ship's side and as he went to drop into the boat lost his hold and fell striking the gunwhale with great force. The mate called Capt. Fitzpatrick and told him the man's head was badly cut and bleeding profusely. The man was not unconscious. He was taken from the boat and brought into the ship's music room and Dr. Thompson of Hermitage Bay who was a passenger on board and Rev. Monsighor Walsh of Renews attended to him. He was then wrapped up in rugs and quilts and sent ashore in the skiff. Neither the doctor nor the priest thought the man seriously hurt as he was conscioiiSj but he died shortly after and before he reached his home.

Sad Fate of Wm. Sesk.
On the morning of the 11th inst. a sad and lamentable occurrence happened at Ferryland, when a fine sturdy fisherman, while trying to get his goods from on board the S. S. Portia, received serious injury and a chill, which resulted a few hours later in his death. The accident happened as he was letting himself down by a rope from the steamer's deck to his own boat, which lay alongside, partly loaded with freight, and just as he let himself over the ship's rail, the rope suddenly gave way, precipating him into the icy waters, his head striking the gunwhale of the boat in the descent. He was immediately pulled out in a half unconscious condition by the men in his boat. A storm, with intense cold, was raging off shore at the time, and the Portia, being further off in the harbor than usual, considerable delay occurred before he was got on shore to warmth and medical treatment. In fact, poor Sesk was chilled to the heart, and in as much danger from the chill as from his injury when they got him to his home. Captain Fitzpatrick is blamed for the delay in the landing of the unfortunate man, and the fishermen of this place are so aroused over the state of affairs in general, which led indirectly to the untimely death of their comrade, that a public meeting was held here on the 15th, when the following resolutions were drawn up and unanimously adopted:\emdash BE IT RESOLVED that we, the fishermen of Ferryland, deeply deplore the sad fate of William Sesk, one of our most industrious and sober fishermen, who died a few hours after receiving serious injury and a chill while trying to get his goods from the S. S. Portia on the morning of the 11th inst.; BE IT RESOLVED, we claim that the late William Sesk was not under the influence of liquor when the fatal accident occurred; BE IT RESOLVED, that we condemn the unikindness of Captain Fitzpatrick, who refused, when asked by Sesk's son to move the ship near Messrs. Goodrdige & Sons' wharf, to admit of his father being speedily landed to receive medical attendance as there was a storm raging off shore and the men in Sesk's boat feared they would not be able to reach land without a lot of time being lost, they realizing, and rightly so, that delay under the weather conditions then prevailing, would possibly prove fatal to the injured man; BE IT RESOLVED, that we deeply sympathize with his widow and orphans in the loss of their breadwinner, a good husband and a kind father; BE IT ALSO RESOLVED, that we deeply deplore the want of a public wharf here and take this opportunity of calling upon our representatives to take this matter in hand during the coming season of the House of Assembly; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that these resolutions be sent to the press for publication. Signed on behalf of the fishermen of Ferryland: \emdash Patrick Farrell, Chairman; Joseph Kinsella, Henry Johnston, John Costello, William Barnable, John Sullivan, Richard Barnable, Wm. J. Costello. Secretary. Ferryland, Jan. 18. 1912.

And the following day the rejoinder by the Captain of the Portia:
Capt. Fitzpatrick on the Ferryland Resolutions.
Dear Sir,\emdash Your issue of yesterday contains a set of resolutions over the signatures of a number of Ferryland men about which I feel called upon to give an explanation. The deceased man, William Sesk, was a passenger from St. John's, and on arriving at Ferryland sent two other passengers ashore in our mail-boat to wake up his sons and bring off a skiff to take his freight. They got off alongside about 7.30 a.m., and about an hour later were ready to leave. The skiif was loaded at the forward gangway on the starboard side. The second mate, who had charge of the deck at the time, told the deceased, who was now the only one to board the skiff to "drop her to the accommodation ladder and get aboard." Unfortunately, however, instead of taking the mate's advice, he swung himself over the side by a rope that was not belayed and striking his head against the gunwhale of the skiff caused his death. As quickly as possible he was taken up and carried to the Social Hall, where he received the attention of Dr. E. Thomson, of Hermitage Bay. and Very Rev. John Walsh, Parish Priest of Renews. I consulted Father Walsh and Dr. Thompson about the injured man, both of whom advised me to wrap him in blankets and send him ashore as quickly as possible, which I did accordingly. The resolutions condemn me as being unkind because I did not move the ship up to Winsor's wharf and effect a speedy landing. Why did they not resolve about who should pay for the skiff load of freight alongside, which would surely upset whilst doing so? And why did they not further resolve that the skiff should have gone leeward instead o! windward, when the injured man would be on shore and housed in ten minutes? When the skiff left the ship's side she was within fifty or sixty yards of the shore. Had she then gone before the gale instead of against it and landed in the eastern end of the harbor, matters may be very different. I sympathize sincerely with the friends and relations of the deceased man and I am heartily sorry that such a dire calamity should happen them or any one else, more particularly in connection with my ship; but I defy the resoluters with their charge of "unkindness" believing that I did my whole duty in the matter. I may also add that it is a monument of disgrace to the people of Placentia, St. Mary's, Trepassey and Ferryland and those who represented them in the House of Assembly for the last twenty years at least, to have no coastal wharves in those places. I am. Yours truly, THOS. FITZPATRICK. Master s.s. Portia. "The Lilacs", Carter's Hill, St. John's. Jan. 1912.
