Joseph (Joe) Sesk - (September 4, 1946 - May 15, 2024) - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) Sesk at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024.
Joe was a cherished son of the late James and Bridget Sesk. He was also predeceased by his loving wife, Agnes. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his son Jamie (Amanda) and daughter Pamela; his adored grandchildren, Lyla and Riley; his caring sisters, Ida (Aus), Gertie, and Anne Marie (Dave); and his devoted brothers, Alfred (Marie) and Robert. His nieces Gillian, Sheryl (David), and Susan (Josh), along with his nephews Blair (Amber), Kristopher (Michelle) and Sean (Heather), will also hold his memory dear.
Joe's final years were greatly enriched by his cherished friendships with the team at Aqua Crab Producers. The camaraderie and support he experienced brought a lot of joy and comfort, filling his days with laughter and companionship. These relationships not only enhanced his life, but also left a lasting impression on all who worked alongside him, making his later years some of the happiest.
Joe was never one to shy away from a good chat. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, at any time. Whether you had a minute or an hour, Joe had a story to fill it. His knack for conversation wasn't just a trait but an art form, one that charmed all who had the pleasure of listening. Yes, he was indeed an affable man, with a unique ability to forge connections. A special goodbye from all who knew him, Joe's presence will be profoundly missed, but fondly remembered by his large circle of friends and family.
Visitation will take place at Fahey's Funeral Home in Fermeuse on Friday, May 17th from 3 PM to 7 PM, and Saturday, May 18th from 2 PM to 7 PM.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Rest in peace Dad, you will forever be in our hearts.

PERSONAL ESSAY UNVEILED A Tale of two sisters by Derek Pelley Present-day St. John's is easily recognizable as the town that I grew up in 50 years ago. The southside hills, Cabot tower, and the basilica still triangulate the skyline above the multi-coloured houses and the harbour. But that's where the similarity ends. The older core of the town has been tarted up and gentrified. Gone are the ghettoized and often impoverished neighbourhoods that I was forced to navigate in the pursuance of my youthful daily business. When you passed out of the familiar and safe confines of a world that existed for only a block on either side of your house, you were usually in a hostile and cruel environment, and had to run the gauntlet of threats and intimidation that spewed from the mouths of the young males who were defending their turf from intrusion. There were only two ways to deal with those situations - stand your ground or try and outrun them. I usually chose the latter. Another huge difference in the world of kids has been the dissolution of the denominational school system. This mirrored and reinforced the mistrust and bigotry that existed between the province's two main religions. To us Protestants, Catholics were like another race of people. Detente was the best we could hope for. Young people of my generation and social standing walked wherever we needed to go. Our parents were not inclined to be chauffeurs, even if they had the means to do so. Living in the western end of town on the Higher Levels, if the need arose to go to the east end, as it often did because both Bannerman Park and Memorial Stadium were there, the most expedient way forced you to pass through the substantial holdings of the Catholic Church in the center of the city, including the Basilica, St Bonaventure's College, Presentation Convent, and the B I S. It was common to meet nuns, usually in pairs. I was scared of them. In their full length black habits, and starched white bandeaus and guinpes, they seemed to both float along and take up the whole sidewalk. My unease was fueled by the rumours that they were bald, and had no hands and feet. If there was enough advanced warning, I would cross the street. :: I met Sister Eileen Sesk in 1994. My brother, Boyd, was a French teacher and moved on to work with the Newfoundland Department of Education, developing and administering their French curriculum. Thus he knew Sesk, who was in charge of French at Holy Heart of Mary High School. (She was always pushing for extra travel bursaries for her French students, as her school had such a large student body.) Sesk was born in Ferryland on October 23, 1923, the second youngest of Patrick and Mary's seven children. The surname Sesk most likely comes from the Irish surname Siske, which morphed over time. She finished 26VOLUME 105 NUMBER 4 2013 her grade 11 in Ferryland, and, because she wanted to teach, took a position at the Catholic school in Port Royal, Placentia Bay the following September, which was arranged by her local priest. There was also an opening available in Conche on the Northern Peninsula, but her father. Patrick, opposed the idea because she wouldn't be able to return home through the school year. So, Port Royal it was, and she spent the year there teaching 15 students in the one-room school. She wanted to teach music. So in 1942, she entered the Presentation Order and moved to St John's: her older sister, Mary Agnes, had entered the convent in 1939. It was accepted and often encouraged for young girls with a strong Catholic upbringing lo enter the religious orders, and were both intelligent, curious, and maybe a little bit ambitious. It was a logical progression for two daughters of a Ferryland fisherman who had intellect and drive. Sesk, or Sister Attracta, as she now became, began teaching Grade 3 and gradually raised her level of education, initially by taking summer courses which were offered at the convent, and then taking summer courses at the old Memorial University on Parade Street. Her ambition to become a music teacher did not come to fruition, and she switched her focus to languages, particularly French and German. She received her Master of Arts degree at Laval University in Quebec in the mid-1950s, and then studied German and Spanish at Clark University in Massachusetts. In 1975, she was elected President of the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT), the first woman to hold this position. I have never heard Sesk speak French, but have often wondered if she pronounces it with the soft lilting Southern Shore cadence that she exhibits in her normal speech. Although Sesk did not see her musical ambitions realized, her sister, Mary Agnes Sesk, took up the slack. Her impressive musical kudos included an Associate Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London, England; Bachelor of Music Education and Choirmaster's Certificate from Catholic University of America, Washington, D C; Bachelor in Church Music from the Gregorian Institute of America, Toledo, Ohio; Honorary Life Membership in the Music Council of the NTA; and Honorary Life Membership in the Canadian Music Educators Association. After retirement, she volunteered at the Correctional Centre in Stephenville, was appointed by the Canadian Bishops to serve on the Church Council on Justice and Corrections, and was chair of the Pastoral Care Committee of the Correctional Centres. Her philosophy, when it came to music, was "if you can speak, you can sing." Through their working careers the Sesks saw little of each other because they were always posted to teach in different areas of Newfoundland. However, during the summer vacation they would travel as much as they could together around the island, and further afield to Montreal and Toronto. Those were good limes for them, NEWFOUNDLAND QUARTERLY 27
and they had a lot of fun together. After retirement, they found themselves in the Presentation Convent in Cathedral Square in St John's, and their wanderlust continued unabated. When visiting Toronto, they stayed at convents there, but always made sure to visit my brother. They would have a cocktail, a Manhattan, which they introduced him to, and which they had learned to make at one of the convents. I rarely have occasion to walk past the Basilica and its adjuncts on Military Road anymore. But I do go to visit Sesk whenever I can at the Presentation Convent. I usually bring her a box of Timbits, or my baked beans, a favourite from her childhood, which are not on the convent's menu. As a real treat I bring a bottle of bakeapple jam, which goes into the kitchen fridge with her name on it. When I park the car and walk up the steep steps to the rather austere Mother House and am buzzed inside, the modern world fades behind me. A portrait of Sister Nano Nagle, founder of the Presentation Order, scrutinizes each visitor as they enter. The Veiled Virgin, the amazingly delicate marble bust carved by Italian sculptor Giovanni Strazza, keeps a watchful eye on those entering the tiny chapel. The wonderful Victorian drawing-room seems to be waiting for a string quartet to strike up a gavotte. Mary Agnes Sesk died on March 18, 2008, and is buried in the cemetery behind the Convent. Sesk turned 89 in October, and, although her eyesight is somewhat diminished because of macular degeneration, she makes up for this slight inconvenience through her great intellectual acuity She is more than willing to regale you with information about what's going on in her family, the arts scene, politics. I once asked her what she would have done if she hadn't joined the convent, but she said it was a non-question. I cherish my times with Sesk in her pleasant room, and also meeting some of the other Sisters, who range in age from 59 to 101. They will often stop to chat for a moment as Sesk is walking me back to the door. When I am finally released into the cacophony of Military Road, with its Metrobuses, Jiffy Cabs, sirens, and stressed people with their ears glued to their cell-phones and iPods, I remember when 1 was afraid of the nuns. If I had only known then what I know now, I wouldn't have crossed the street. Derek Pelley is a writer, musician, and one of the founding members of Figgy Duff. 28VOLUME 105 NUMBER 4 2013

Some doubt in Aunt Jean Funkhouser's files about spelling of Surname- Seske, Sisk, Sesk? See information on this from David Wells below. In an email dated 31/01/2002 Ursula Morry Kieley (Aunt Liz's daughter insists that she was NEVER known as anything other than Sesk. (see below)
Christian name also variously spelt with an "s" or a "z". Also David Wells records shows her first name as Mary so I have that (20/07/01)
Had an exchange of emails in summer 2001 with a David Wells, whose wife is a descendent of Aunt Liz's brother:
From: David Wells [wellswd@nbnet.nb.ca] Sent: June 25, 2001 11:55 AM To: Chris Morry Subject: The Morrys
Hello Chris: Thank you for the prompt reply. I fit into this equation by marriage. My wife is Anne Marie Sesk, eldest daughter of James Sesk, son of Patrick, son of William your Aunt Liz's father. Liz's Grand niece. Mary Elisabeth Sesk was born under the name SISK and married under that name. The spelling change occured sometime during her lifetime butI have not heard of an explanation for it other than poor education or penmanship on someones part. This being speculation of course. The Sisk name is well known in Ireland from the County Cork area. Cloyne to be exact. And there has never been an irishman to move to the southern shore of course!! I got into this from my own family and then decided to look into the connecting familys. I have data on several Nfld. Families which connect through the Sesk family. Other than that, these families have no long term relationship. Just as the Morry's connect to the Sesk's. Though the Morry's and Sesk's lived in the same community. I meet BIll Morry, the man who ran the buying operation many years ago when Anne Marie's father was alive and selling fish there. Anne Marie left Ferryland when she was 17. She remembers the family but hasn'thad much contact since then with the exception of Shelia Morry who attended the University of Quebec at Chicotimi one summer with her. I didn't have time to look through your site fully, so some of this you may already have. looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi David:
Great to hear from you. The person you mention was my "Aunt Liz" (actually my great aunt, my father's aunt). I too use Family Tree Maker 8 and other programmes and would be pleased to share cross-over data between our two databases. As you may have noticed, my Family Tree Maker site wanders all over the place. I don't just follow close blood relations but lines related to anyone associated with the Morry's as well. This invariably leads to other researchers like you who often can shed light on areas of the Morry family tree where I had no data.
What is your connection to the Morry line? Are you related through Aunt Liz?
Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hello Chris! My name is David Wells and I am doing some research on the Sesk/Sisk Family of Ferryland. I was going through your website and found Elisabeth Seske. I have more info on her and her family if you are intersted. Drop me a note. I am running Family Tree Maker Version 8 and can sendyou info that way to add to yours. And I would be interested in gathering more specific information on her Morry descentants. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Hi Chris:
As you can see I got this about two weeks ago; I had been waiting forit for some time. There is also some more missing but I'll have to review once more your last transmission - a very long one I recall - to see exactly what it is.
I can tell you now though that there is no record that Mom was ever known as Sisk - I've spoken to others about it, among them my older sister, Mary, as well as a first cousin ( a Sesk) who is about the same age. The latter says that one of the older nuns insisted on spelling it as Siske even though the family didn't. (I think she was an old Irish nun). If it shows on her birth certificate as Sisk, it could be a mistake. God knows there are plenty of mistakes on birth certificates, especially since, in the "olden" days, the records were kept by the parish priest. (I myself was given the wrong date of birth, which I didn't bother to change since it was only one day off.) Unless it's absolutely necessary, we would rather leave it as Sesk. Mary can't believe that Mom wouldn't have told her or Lillian if she had changed the spelling of her name during her lifetime.
I'll get back to you with the rest soon, I promise it won't be so long this time.
Sincerely,
Ursula.

Chris: This is a response to your previous message. It was interesting reading all those e-mails from various relatives, though it did delay my actually making the changes necessary. I won't bother to point where the mistakes are; I'm sure you can figure that out. I've just identified in which generation they occur,
Generation #1: My mother died in 1979, not 1980. She and my father were married in 1920, not 1950, obviously.
Lillian died on 26 March, 1987 (not 1978). She was married to Vincent Wakeham (not Daniel). Margaret born on 10 June; Beatrice born on 7 Feb.
Generation #2:
Margaret's son is Joseph Patrick Bulko (not Pastrick - obviously a typo)
In Sheila's list of children, delete Vicki - no such person exists
Generation #3
In children of Margaret Wakeham and Claude Moreau there is a slight error in the spelling of her daugher; the second name is Lillian (notm)
I forgot to include Laura's grandkids in the last changes.
Children of Catherine Ann Williams and Eugene Pennell:
Tyler John Pennell born Jan. 13, 1988 Meghan Alexandria born Dec. 22, 1990
Child of Catherine Ann Williams (Pennell) and William King:
Braeden Williams born March 26, 1996
And the latest to come into our lives a few months ago, the son of Laura's deceased son, Craig, (unfortunately, I forgot the mother's name at the moment; he was give up for adoption because of the parents' ages). He is Jamie Murphy, born July 3, 1980.
An interesting story; he had known for many years he was adopted and so last spring he began the search for his biological parents. There hasn't been a face-to-face meeting yet with his mother and grandmother but lots of phone calls and letters and pictures have been exchanged. Laura was hysterically happy (but she's calmed down a bit now). Jamie is in the armed forces and currently posted in Manitoba but plans to come home this summer.
That seems to be all the changes I have for now. When more come along, I'll let you know.
Ursula.
