From Enid O'Brien 050910:
Hi Chris,
No, our Stanfords are really not Stanfords at all. Our name is really Stannard from Suffolk Devon, and our first ancestor, Stephen, came to Woody Island, Placentia Bay. He didn't stay there very long, just long enough to get married, and then moved to St. John's. The priest changed the name to Stanford in dad's generation as he wasn't familiar with the name Stannard. The Stannards were originally Church of England. Dad's brother, Jack (when he got old enough) refused to go by Stanford and always went by Stannard. Dad and the rest of his family went by Stanford.
Enid
301110 from Enid O'Brien: Dad's father, James Stannard (3/8/1864-14/9/1927) and his mother Mary Margaret Allison (15/8/1868-26/4/1959) were md at the Basilica 30/10/1886. They were both from St. John's. Grandfather lived on Water St and Mary Mgt "Gran" lived on James Street off Barnes Road (there were 3 James Street). They lived on Tessier Place when dad was born and they lost their house in the big 1892 fire. They then moved to the west end (Water St, Waterford Bridge Road and Southside Road ) and grandfather vowed he would never live east of the railway station.
Dad's father James (1864-1927) also worked in the Tannery, he did some farming and was a keeper at what is now known as the Waterford Hospital. He and gran moved in and raised dad's first family when Mame died at age 32 years. Dad was away from home a lot of the time in those days and gran managed the home until dad married again in 1937. She then had her own section of the house - her children and most of dad's children were married by this time.

This is how Enid explained how the name was changed from Stannard to Stanford. As usual, a meddling, know-it-all, ignorant priest was behind it.
Chris,
The name change is hard to believe but true. Our name was always Stannard but when Uncle Steve(2nd Stephen) went to get christened in 1894 the priest said that the correct name was 'Stanford' and not Stannard. He said that he found it on my great grandfather's birth certificate. The priest's notation on the record stating that the correct name is 'Stanford" is seen on the original church register and it is the same story we were told by dad. So the priest wrote the name as Stanford and we were called Stanford from that point on. The only thing is when I looked at the original record for Placentia Bay the name was 'Stannard" so I don't know where the priest was coming from. Maybe the name wasn't familiar to him. Apparently my grandfather didn't like the idea but wouldn't go against the priest because he thought the priest knew best.
Grandfather didn't know his parents very much because he was only a few years old when his father and mother died. His father was coming back from Barbados when he got pneumonia, died, and was buried at sea. His mother was Sarah (Shaw) alias (1) Sheehan, (2) Stannard died shortly afterwards. Sarah Shaw (from Shaw St., St. John's) was md to Thomas Sheehan before she married James Stannard. When gt grandfather died and shortly afterwards his wife, Sarah Shaw (Sheehan) Stannard died the children were split. The Sheehan children went with Sheehan relatives and grandfather was raised by his Aunt Mary called Maude Stannard Ryan. Maude's mother, Mariah Stannard, lived with her daughter and helped in their upbringing.
When dad's brother, John, went away to the USA he refused to use Stanford and his official passport was issued as Stannard. From then on we were called Stanford but Uncle Jack living in New York was called Stannard. He was married but didn't have any children so the Stannard name stopped there.
I guess that is as clear as mud.

On the Stannard side - Dad's grandfather (my gt gd father) was also James Stannard (13/1/1837-1864) the same year grandfather was born. Dad's grandfather died at sea on his way to Barbados and was buried at sea. He was born on Sound Island, Placentia Bay but moved to St. John's in late 1850s. He married at the Basilica 10/5/1859 to Sarah Shaw Sheehan. Sarah was a school teacher from Shaw Street in St. John's but taught school in Placentia Bay. She md James Sheehan an Irish man from St. John's and had a son, Thomas Sheehan, before she md grandfather. He didn't have a long life and she married James Stannard 10/5/1859 at Basilica in St. John's. Sarah also died a young woman and and her children, James (godfather) and Stephen were raised by their aunt, Mary "Maude" Ryan and their grandmother, Maria Stannard. Stephen went to Chicago and married an NL girl there. They didn't have any children.
