Robert "Bob" THORNE - This Province has lost one of its most colorful amateur historians and a proud Newfoundlander. Robert (Bob) Thorne passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the age of 91. While Bob never held a PhD, his knowledge of this Province's Naval and Aviation history was indeed profound. No doubt this was developed in his youth while growing up in the East End of St John's during the Second World War. Not surprisingly, his love of history contributed to his long career with the Federal Government in the Department of Veterans Affairs where he enjoyed interacting on a daily basis with veterans of the First and Second World Wars. For those who had the pleasure of meeting Bob, they would undoubtedly be left with fond memories of his great stories. In fact, Bob went one step further and wrote numerous historical articles that were published in the Downhome Magazine. Many of these articles he then compiled into a book called 'A Cherished Past, Newfoundland's Front Row Seat to History', which was published in 2004. He was also a frequent caller to Open Line with Paddy Daly, sharing in his many stories of Newfoundland history. Bob was interviewed numerous times by CBC about the history of the East End of St John's and was even featured in the History Channel's episode of Alcock and Brown's first transatlantic flight in 1919. In his younger days Bob loved to travel, especially to sunny spots such as Florida and the Caribbean. Closer to home, he made many a trip around the Avalon Peninsula, especially the Irish Loop in his pride and joy, his MGB sports car. Bob enjoyed spending his summers in his mother's hometown of Aquaforte. Bob was proud to be a graduate of St. Bon's, as with his passion for various histories, he relished in stories about his days at St. Bon's school. He lived his whole life on Forest Avenue in St. John's, surrounded by wonderful neighbors, both past and present! He was an avid CBer for many years and enjoyed connecting with fellow CB enthusiasts here and abroad under the handle "The Sportsman Double 47". For the past thirty or more years, he became a regular at Tim Hortons on Kenmount Road, meeting up with some of his good buddies like Dave Percy. Both Dave and another close friend Gord Stanford were always there for him. Bob became a resident of Lane's Retirement Living in 2022, where he made new friends. The family would also like to thank the staff at Lane's for the care of Bob, especially in the past few months. He will certainly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Bob was predeceased by his parents John and Anne (Lovett) Thorne, his brother Joseph and brother-in-law Stan Barnable. Leaving to mourn his sister Frances Barnable (Steven, Paul, and Roger) and sister-in-law Bertha (McCarthy) Thorne (Gerard and John), as well as several great nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation and funeral service at Cauls Funeral Home on LeMarchent Road. Visitation will be on Friday September 15 from 2-4, and 5-7 p.m., with a service at noon on Saturday, September 16.
